...Maks didn't ever really think about growing up.

After spending a week back at Hogwarts, and helping out at the Cursebreaker panel, it put into perspective the things that had and hadn't changed at Hogwarts. Seeing all those little faces - Merlin, had he really been that small at one point? And some of those kids had attitude like he couldn't believe - or really, he could, he just didn't want to admit that he had caused his own fair share of trouble while he'd attended Hogwarts. All of those thought and a million more just zipped along in his head even as he made his way back home.

Sure, sometimes being a kid would be nice again, but Maks wasn't fooling himself - he was still a kid at heart. Lilya could attest to that.

Honestly Maks couldn't wait to get back home to her. He was pretty sure she'd ask him how the career week went and who he'd worked with and all the rest. Friendly and familiar faces - highlight of his week was hanging out with Reid if he was perfectly honest. The man's shortbread recipe was to die for and gave Gran a run for her money... though not that Maks would tell Gran that. The thought made a silly little grin come to his face as he got his keys out, jiggling the lock and finally get the mechanisms turning to get himself into the flat.

The smells of home hit him and Maks let out a happy little sigh. It was good to be home.

"Aye, Lilya! Ah'm home!" He called out as he closed the door behind him, locking it up and taking his coat and shoes off. He also had goodies for his wife, but maybe he could tease her a little first...

Lillian Wayland-Valentin

Lillian had burned the meal she’d been trying to surprise Maks with. It had happened earlier in the day, thankfully, and therefore she had time to open up all the windows while simultaneously burning some of the candles that she knew Maksim liked the scent of to air things out. She had quickly ordered from their favorite takeaway restaurant nearby and had just been finishing blowing out all the candles and the last touches on her hair when she heard the doorknob turn.

She may not be very good at traditional domestic tasks, but it was O for effort, right? And at least her hair and makeup were on point. Of course, Lil had always relied on her looks to get by, and it had largely worked for her, even though Maks was always one to remind her that she was more than a pretty face. Now a gossip columnist for a second-rate magazine, Lillian wasn’t exactly proud of her career, but at least she was doing something she had passion for.

And to get sappy, she had a great husband, which was what she’d always wanted. Time spent with Maks was never dull, and she merely hoped he couldn’t smell the still slightly-acrid burnt smell wafting out of the kitchen beneath all the candle fragrance…

“Yay!” She exclaimed with a large smile after Maksim entered, a wide smile on her face as she finally caught sight of him. She wrapped her arms around him in a tight embrace, hazel eyes alight with happiness as she gave him a kiss on the cheek. “It’s about time. I think you’ve forgotten I can’t really cook for myself,” Lillian told him dramatically, but the light laugh she emitted belied the serious tone in her words.

When Maks heard Lil's exclamation his grin widened substantially, his left sided dimple prominent on his face as he wrapped his arms around her. His time back at Hogwarts had been nice and all but being able to go back home to Lillian was a million times better, thank you very much. "Ach, it felt like Ah wa' away fer eons," he replied back with equal dramatics, though the whole time he too was laughing. His grin turned into a smile when he felt her kiss on his cheek.

Another thing he had missed that he was going to catch up on right that very moment - he really did love that Lillian was a heck of a lot shorter than he was.

With his arms still around her, he quickly hefted her up, bringing her to his eye level, a pleased look on his face as he gave her a kiss hello, now that all that verbal pleasantry stuff was over with. "Hogwarts wa' nice, but Ah missed ye, an' home too. It wa' mighty strange tae be back there... aw o' the wee bairns seemed sae small. Ah wa' never tha' shor'." He gave her a wink at that last bit because of course Maks knew at one time he'd been just as small as the rest of the kids.

That didn't mean he wanted to admit it right about now though.

"Before Ah talk abou' tha', Ah got ye some goodies," Maks remarked, the pleased look back on his face even as he set Lillian down. He reached for his bag, hefting it into his arms before he looked down at Lillian and initiated Operation: Gift Teasing.

"Now... Mah question fer ye lass is, Ah think Ah should just wrap these up an' save'em fer Christmas, dorn't ye think?" He asked, trying to look as serious as possible (hint: it wasn't working). "Or! Even better, Ah think Ah could wrap it up an' save it fer our birthdays come next May?"

As Maks lifted Lillian up, Lil let out a delighted laugh, wrapping her arms obligingly around his neck and refusing to let go. She shook her head as he insisted he was never as short as the kids he had spent the last week with. “Not all of us are lucky enough to be trees, Maks,” Lil teased, her own lack of height always a discernible difference in all aspects of their lives. It couldn’t have been better illustrated then, as Lil clung to Maksim who was lifting her up so they were eye-to-eye, her feet well off the ground in so doing.

The brunette gave him a curious look as he set her down, stating that he had goodies. “I didn’t know Hogwarts was such a place for souvenirs,” She told him jokingly, raising a perfectly plucked eyebrow at him even as a smile pulled at the corners of her lips as she added, “If you brought me some random kid’s dungbomb stash, I am not going to be impressed!” She was trying for seriousness, but couldn’t help the smile that crept onto her features, ruining her charade.

“You tease!” Lillian accused as Maks made a big show of bringing over his stuff, and then asked if he should save the gifts for Christmas, or even their birthdays!

“Well, if they’re just things you stole from those poor children, I suggest you wrap them up and send them back to them for Christmas,” Lillian told him, shaking her head in disappointment. She wasn’t an overly curious person, but when it came to gifts, she couldn’t help but wonder what they were. But if Maks wanted to play the whole teasing game, she could play, too. It was what they were best at, after all. “Though I guess maybe if you aren’t going to show off what you got, I have things of my own I could withhold from you… until Christmas,” Lillian told him with a devious smirk on her features.

"It's nae mah fault tha' ye didnae drink yer milk when ye were a wee lass," Maks retorted even though he had known other students and family members in general that, despite having had their milk growing up, had remained short as could be. He couldn't help that he had grown into the magnificent tree that he was, okay? "But ye hae tae agree tha' Ah'm the best o' the best trees," he added with a wink before he had set his wife down onto her two feet to procure the goodies he'd gotten for her, and commence the teasing.

Because Maksim was nothing if not a perpetual mischief maker even into his approaching mid-twenties.

"Ach, how did ye guess saw quickly tha' Ah jus' wen' an' stole some dungbombs an' maybe a portable swamp?" Maksim lamented, lathering the effect with a woe-is-me tone and an exaggeratedly crestfallen face. It didn't last all that long though, because Maks couldn't keep a straight face in front of Lillian to save his life, especially when it was obvious that teasing mode was engaged. "Oi, steal? Ah would never dae such a terrible thing. Ye wound meh Lilya," he added for effect, pouting at the brunette until he couldn't help himself and the pout turned into a little wolfish grin.

Fact of the matter was, he had not stolen anything thank you very much.

"Ah wen' tae some o' the shops in Hogsmeade fer yer information," he decided to clarify, even as he took one green velvet satchel out of his bag and dangled it almost carefree in front of his sight and Lillian's. "But if ye seem sae convinced Ah stole'em Ah can certainly send'em back tae some o' the students an'- wait, whit things?" 👀

Maksim's attention was immediately captured when Lillian teased him right back with things of her own. And while Maks could be patient - when he wanted to be - playing the teasing game was going to be a little harder now that his own curiosity was triggered. He wouldn't change that for the world though.

"Well then," Maksim mused, expression thoughtful for a few moments. "Ah suppose Ah could share at least one o' the things Ah got ye, if ye share one o' them surprises ye got fer meh," he attempted to reason, "We could make equivalen' exchange o' it, aye?" Maksim knew it wouldn't be equivalent exchange in the slightest, but he was deep into the teasing game now and letting up wasn't in the cards. He raised a brow at Lillian and tried to needle some answers out of her. "Whit were ye busy daein' while Ah was gone tae equal surprises?"
