Just because you're damaged doesn't mean you decrease in value

Mason Fluke

Mason Fluke was back at Hogwarts, but every time he walked into the Great Hall, he just couldn’t stomach it--even if his girlfriend was in there enjoying her breakfast, lunch or dinner. As much as he wanted to be able to sit down next to Alayna and enjoy a laugh with her, he just couldn’t. He wouldn’t. Sometimes, she joined him in the kitchens, other times their schedules just didn’t mesh. She was the Head Girl, after all, and on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He was used to being left in the dust when one of her other responsibilities came calling. He didn’t love her any less. In fact, he was always in awe.

Today was one of those rare days that she had time to herself, and instead of spending it in the dueling chamber, she had met him out by the lakefront. There was a large log just on the shore, a place where most students went to sit and hang out. There was even an old fire pit there, but who knew how long ago it was last lit.

There they were. Fluke was laying on his back with his head on Alayna’s thigh, and he felt her fingers gently combing through his hair, lulling him into a false sense of security. There was no security in this place, and he never wanted to come back in the first place. The only reason he did… well, her name was Alayna.

Fluke sighed contentedly. “Mmm. Feels nice,” he murmured, keeping his eyes closed. “How did you manage to get today off from your H-G duties?”

Alayna Weasley

‘Home’ didn’t hold the same meaning it once had. There was a time when, no matter what’d happened in her life or how fearful she was, Alayna could return home and all of that would dissipate into nothingness. She could walk through the doors of her parent’s house and feel safe, talk to her cousins and fear nothing more than a stray dungbomb. And that time was over now. For months the seed of fear had slowly spread its roots and cracked into her core, isolating her from her family and making it more and more maddening each time she saw them acting as if everything was still normal when it most definitely was not. But she didn’t know what to say to them, didn’t know what to say to anyone without them shooting her down or calling her a brat.

So she didn’t say anything; bottled it all up inside until some unfortunate soul came about and tried to pry something from her and then…

And then she couldn’t deal.

Her newfound title was well deserved, probably, but the fact hardly helped Alayna to feel any better about her situation. She was scared and the trial with Fluke had magnified that fear from merely consisting of ‘the world isn’t safe anymore’ to also including ‘you’re going to lose everything’. She’d lose her family. Lose her boyfriend. And then what? What would she do? Where would she go?

The worry silently festered inside her, but when rare moments of calm arrived and she was able to actually relax, she tried not to let it consume her. Leaning up against a log now, the redhead sat and absentmindedly ran her fingers through Fluke’s hair. Despite his debating to not return to Hogwarts after the holidays, she’d somehow managed to convince him to stay and certainly appreciated the company now. She treasured it, every moment.

Only Merlin knew how many more moments she had left with him.

“I told Ethan to deal with it; he’s not got a choice” she muttered back. She felt comfort in the feel of Fluke’s head on her leg, the softness of his hair, the warm sound of his voice. He was there, he was safe, and for now at least, she didn’t have to confront anything else. “You’re more important.”

Mason Fluke

Fluke couldn't help but chuckle at his girlfriend. It was moments like these that he tried to hang onto. They made all the other moments of loneliness seem insignificant when he had her here like this. There were days when he didn't even want to get out of bed. Of course, it had been suggested that he see one of those healers for some councelling, as if he was a touched in the head. He wasn't. It felt very practical when it came to his distrust in the wizarding world. He was supposed to be safe, and since he had started his education here, it felt like his life had been on the line more times than he cared for.

Triwizard Tournament was one thing. Werewolf attacks? That was something else. He could have lost Alayna that day--forget about himself.

"You show that lame head boy who's boss," he continued chuckling.

The Ravenclaw opened his eyes to take Alayna in. Her hair was a fiery halo, and she was hot. "Is this the part where we get sickeningly cute, and we start making out?" he said with a sly smile. "Cuz, I'm totally on board with that."
