Excursion one; The Petting Zoo

Recommended Posts

Ms Murphy

Maj had been bugging Craigley for weeks while she had been organising this excursion. Writing Owls and making plans for transportation. Agonizing over what they would make and pack for the thirty something kiddos’ lunches. Allergies and intolerances sucked to try and plan for but she was making an effort, at least. Spending some other time practising spells to wrangle and confine the kids if necessary. Hopefully it wouldn’t, but this years group were a handful to say the least. But at least herself and Lugg were semi popular with the bunch. Or at least she thought so. @Adam Sinclair had proven that by playing ringleader rock thrower when Mr Lugg had been accosted by the aurors last week. Maj hoped that someday the kids would stand up for her like that.

But today the day had come. Now she stood in front of the kiddos she was bursting with the excitement of it all. A petting zoo was a fun day out. A magical petting zoo would be probably a little more eventful. But Maj could take it. Heck she’d probably join in with the trouble fun when it came to it.

Right you lot listen up!” Scanning her eyes around the group and their buddy system buddies, she stood by Lugg, waiting for the poor souls affected by the Portkey to drink up their motion sickness potion and stop looking so peaky. “Some of you may not be muggleborns and are used to magical creatures. Some of you are likely not. So today is the chance to see some of the less dangerous creatures up close and personal. That’s not to say they still could bite, so don’t do anything stupid I guess

As some of the students emitted a groan she scowled under her sunglasses, turning to @Mr Lugg for support. Maybe it wasn’t the most exciting a trip. But at least the sun was out. She just hoped someone was responsible enough to make sure the kids were wearing sunscreen.

Please wait for Mr Lugg to post before posting.

Mr Lugg

Craigley  was half-excited about the upcoming petting zoo trip. Half  because who didn’t love a petting zoo? They were always full of animals in their cutest stage, right before they grew into their adult forms such as steak, chicken drumsticks and pork pies. This petting zoo, in particular, had both muggle animals and some of the safer magical species. He was very familiar with the petting zoo because (and here comes the unexcited half) he used to be a manager at the petting zoo because he’d discovered his passion was in harvesting herbs for a potions supply company. That was before he discovered his passion was working in a jam factory which brings us pretty much up to the moment he decided his passion was teaching.

All of which is to say that he had mixed feelings about visiting a workplace he’d left without any notice, in the middle of his workday. However, he’d organised the trip thinking of these children and how much they would enjoy seeing the animals. If he’d managed to be cheery after the events of last week he certainly wasn’t going to let an awkward personal encounter stop him from smiling.

“Here we are,” he told the children as the group stood in front of an extensive petting zoo fenced into several sections. “Remember that we need to be calm, gentle and quiet because animals are easily startled and could hurt you. The first section you enter will be full of muggle animals, and the others have various magical animal babies. I highly recommend making sure you see the winged foals and baby clabberts, but there’s plenty here to keep you entertained. Oh! And the puffskeins, of course, don’t miss those.

“If you would like some food for the animals, just ask one of the petting zoo staff. Have fun!”

Jean Li

Jean Li

Pre-Hogwarts Primary

Jean had never been particularly inclined to animals growing up, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t excited about this excursion.  Everything about magic seemed more exciting, and Jean was keen for the possibility of maybe seeing a real unicorn - her muggle sister had told her they weren’t real.  Her only reservation about not being able to take photographs to prove her sister wrong was quickly forgotten as she grabbed the item she’d been instructed to grab.

The lurch threw her off balance, and made her feel the way that certain rides at theme-parks made her feel.  Sprawled onto the ground in the position she’d landed, Jean groaned, before picking herself up from the ground and sniffing at the motion sickness potion.  After the set of instructions, Jean moved hesitantly to an enclosure that didn’t seem to have that many of her peers beside it.

“What’s a flo-bber-worm?”  Jean whispered to no one in particular, before reaching a hand out to pet the thing.  She retracted it quickly as she wondered aloud “do its bites hurt?”

As Calder stood around the entrance of the petting zoo, the eleven-year-old was having a serious mental debate over whether he hated portkeys or side-along apparitions the most. Despite travelling via either method rather frequently, it was still something that the boy hated. It left his stomach in a gut-wrenching state, twisting and turning in an attempt to remind him that he could spill the contents of his stomach at any given moment. Calder found it uncomfortable to say the least, but he did what he could to wait it out in the hopes that the unpleasant sensations would subside before he took to exploring the zoo.

It didn't take long for him to venture into the magical parts of the zoo, eyeing up creatures he was far more familiar with. He was sure he had even caught sight of @Giles Cassidy at one point, but the other seemed busy doing his own thing. Besides, what would Calder even say if he were to approach the other boy. It was bad enough that his mother had arranged some sort of upcoming play date for the two of them. He didn't know what to expect and honestly, it was better to keep his expectations low. The longer Calder could keep space between the two of them, the less chance he had to get his hops up that something good could come from it.

Honestly, he was used to just entertaining his sisters. Having to deal with others outside of his family was strange and he wasn't quite sure how to handle it. Especially when it seemed like most of the boys in the class were super rowdy.

Calder's brow furrowed, the small brunette quietly occupying himself with finding a staff member to get some feed. He didn't want to do much. If the boy could just stand there and get away with idly feeding some creature, he could spend the rest of the trip lost in his own thoughts. Fortunately for him, one of the keepers had given him a small bucket of lettuce perfect for flobberworms.

He made his way over to the pen only to find that he wasn't the only one there. "It won't hurt you," Calder insisted quietly as he watched @Jean Li puller her hand away. "They eat leafy things," he continued, holding up the plastic pail with one hand.

"Here, you can feed it some lettuce. But like, you actually have ta feed it, cause they don't like ta move much."

Mika Dierdorff

Petting zoos were a bit...childish. And dirty. And smelly.

Mika had asked her father not to make her go to Ottaline Gambol Center that day, and let her miss the trip because she quite honestly wasn't interested. Plus, she knew @Oliver Strausser would definitely be going, and she just didn't want to deal with...that. But she also realized she needed to pick her battles with him; going on this "pre-hogwarts" trip would get her closer to going to actual Hogwarts.

So she was there. And so was the smell of animals.

She waited near the entrance, being one of the very last to make their way inside. But she did finally make her way in farther, taking a few moments to pat one of the young aethonan foals that had trotted up to the edge of its enclosure. Winged horses weren't so bad, really; her dad spent every day at work around them, making sure that they were treated ethically and periodically being the one to use Disillusionment charms on them so they wouldn't be noticed by muggles.

She slowly wandered away from the foals, feeling a bit down about being by herself. To be honest, she had very few friends, and being mad at Oliver left her with...well, that wasn't important. But of course, that just meant she would have to force herself into a conversation somewhere. Meet someone new.

So when she saw just two people standing near...something, she decided that she would head over there. It as a decision she quickly regretted, as she looked at the mucusy worm in the pin. And the boy had a pail of food for it, so he was apparently eager to feed the...thing.

She made a small disgusted face at the creature, then looked back at @Calder Milano and @Jean Li. "Personally, I wouldn't want to put my hand anywhere near that thing," she said, after literally nobody asked her opinion. "It looks awful."

Lorinda Weasley

Lorinda Weasley

Pre-Hogwarts Primary

If there was one thing that Rin loved the most besides ballet, music, reading, and any type of art in general it had to be animals. It was no secret that Rin longed to have a pet of her very own. Laney had a pet given to her by Daddy when she first started going to Hogwarts. Hopefully her parents will think she was responsible enough to have one of her very own once she attended Hogwarts.

Until then, Rin was attending Pre-Hogwarts events in order to show her parents that she could be social and responsible.  This was difficult since Rin was shy and had a hard time talking to people other than her family and a few friends she had known since she was a toddler. Somehow, she found herself going to a petting zoo. Daddy said she could go since it was full of less dangerous animals. He told her that she wasn't supposed to associate with boys and make a new friend of the female species.

Rin was not like her older sister and wouldn't cling to the first boy she saw. Besides, boys were scary and make weird noises. Staying as far away from the boys as she could, the raven haired girl went into the petting zoo and towards a soft looking creature. "What is that" she asked the person standing next to her in a voice that was barely above a whisper?

Tatyana Singleton

Tatyana heard a voice from beside her and turned to see another girl--a Hufflepuff--standing there. "I'm not sure, but they look like nifflers." she replied, watching the creatures sniffing around the ground. "My dad gave me a book about them. They're really neat--they find all sorts of things for you. I wish I had one. I keep losing my allowance money at home."

She gazed at the nifflers for another long moment before realizing that she was being left behind. Not wanting to be wandering around by herself, she quickly ran off to be close to a group of her fellow classmates. Just then, the word "flobberworm" reached her ears and she turned round and trotted toward an enclosure where, sure enough, there was a large group of the creatures slithering around. Tatyana reached in and picked one up, momentarily grimacing at the feel of the flobberworm as it slid over her skin, but then holding it up to her eyes and looking closely at it. It was actually quite fascinating to observe; she only hoped that somehow during her years at Hogwarts, she'd be able to study these animals more in-depth.
