Hufflepuff Quidditch Tryouts

Madam Grating

September 21, 2041

Cloudy, with a light, misty rain. There is a distinct chill in the air that may seep into your bones.

A new year, new colleagues, and new but still indistinguishable children's faces looking out at her from the stands. She was already on her broom, it had been too long since she'd had a chance to fly and she figured she had a better chance of dodging a few of the raindrops if she were extra mobile. She surveyed the crowd of potential athletes and magically amplified her voice.

"The Quidditch Pitch is to be respected as a place of great triumph and sour defeat," she began, in a low and ominous tone, "and my fellow officials and I will not tolerate any lollygagging or tomfoolery on this pitch. You are here to measure your skills as an athlete and to show us your competence in the air. You are decidedly not here to misbehave, and for Merlin's sake you are not here to fall to your death."

And those were the ground rules covered with the least amount of enthusiasm she could possibly muster up. Glancing back at her new colleagues, she hoped to Merlin they weren't the enthusiastic type, it would put a damper on her apathetic sneering.

"When I call out your house, you will run down to the pitch and take a lap around the edge before grabbing a school broom." She wouldn't mention that they were the same brooms recently recovered from the 3 year blast-ended skrewt and firecrab infestation and hadn't been thoroughly tested. But she also hadn't mentioned the infestation to her new colleagues, and there were parts of a job that new hires did not need to know. "You will then advance to each of the stations set up around the pitch and complete the tasks at each one, as quickly and accurately as you can."

She waved vaguely to Mr Hartley, Mr Nettleton, Mx Padeaux, and Mr Snout, "We will be stationed around the pitch to supervise and answer any worthwhile questions you might ask."

"Hufflepuff, you're up! Get moving!"

. . . . . .

There was a bit of rain on the ground and coming from the sky, Desmond didn’t care about that though. What he did know was that there was quidditch try outs and Desmond made his way out there and figured that he should try out, since he missed quidditch and with wanting to be a professional player it would be best to be back on the quidditch team.

Listening to the officiators to what they were telling him and who else was out there to try out, people that he didn’t know that well at all, that they would be running down the pitch and make a lap around the quidditch pitch.

Getting on the broom, he heard that it was time for Hufflepuff. He took a breath and got on his broom and was ready to try. Not knowing that was going to happen with the different stations that he had to go.

Addy was filled with excitement as she sat in the stands waiting for the chance to take a broom and get up in the air in her hopes of making the house team.  It was, after all, a moment she'd been waiting over two years for.  She was the most prepared she could possibly be - she was actually wearing pants for one - and had used a tube of black lipstick that she'd swiped from one of the common room girls bathrooms to paint war stripes on her cheeks.

She had this.   She launched herself off the ground and followed an older boy, to her knowledge one of the only ones who'd actually played on the team before, into the sky. and began to fly a half circle around the pitch.  She wasn't sure what was in store for them next but she gripped her broom tightly in excitement.  She knew she could handle it.

Pandora Midnight

Pandora went pale. No one had mentioned actual running would be involved in playing Qudditch. She wasn't even that good at flying. It didn't even make sense that she was trying out in the first place. If her mother found out, she would be in a ridiculous amount of trouble. Ladies didn't run. Ladies weren't suppose to break a sweat. Yet here she was, attempting to try out for a sport she had never even played before. Heck, Pandora wasn't even sure she knew all the rules of the game.

Many of the others in her house were already up in the air by the time she even reached the brooms. There was an awful feeling in the pit of her stomach that wouldn't go away as she kicked off into the air to join everyone else.

"Panda!" Addy called out and waved a hand in the air towards her friend.  It had been a big surprise when the other girl had mentioned she was going to try out for the team.  Adrina must have been talking about it in her sleep or something, making it sound far too exciting to pass up.

"There's gonna be a red ball... you know?  We have to get it through one of those hoops." She explained, shouting at her roommate.  "Just make sure you hold on to your broom really tight when you fly."  The last thing she wanted to see was her best friend plummeting to the ground.  For the moment she decided it was best not to mention the bludgers.

Jacquetta was excited! She had always wanted a chance to play Quidditch and this was it! Well, maybe. But at least she’d get to have fun during the tryouts. She had been looking forward to this since she had been sorted. She had nearly backed out when she realized how little time she had but her fear of missing out had been too much. She wanted to play and have fun! She listened to the instructions and hoped that she’d be able to keep up. She was a fencer back home but that was extremely different to this. She would have to work on her cardio more. Probably. Did she need cardio if she was on a broom? She’d think about it later.

Papa said he'd dabbled in Quidditch, and Vladdy had played some Quidditch too, so then obviously Viktoriya felt it was her sacred duty to give it a try for herself! Sports were fun after all, and even though there were bludgers flying around, she faced enough potential danger on a dueling platform anyway. No sense in being afraid, because that would get you nowhere.

That and Viktoriya liked to play outside in the rain, so that was a double incentive to get her outside and on a broomstick to give the team a shot. Maybe she'd actually make it, how cool would that be?

"Wooo!" Viktoriya cheered when it was Hufflepuff's turn to get'er done, and the little girl was quick to start running. She might have been little and probably not the strongest, but she made up for that in speed and stamina.

They were told to begin and Jacquetta took off running. The problem was that she had already forgotten the objective of what they were trying to do. Did she get on a broom? Did she have to keep running? Where was she going? They had just given instructions and yet here she was, confused already. She was normally pretty good about these types of things but the excitement got in the way of everything. She followed the other students who were also running. They probably knew what they were doing! She could follow along and all would be well! She couldn’t mess this up because she wanted to make the team!

Playing quidditch was something he cared about and he didn’t want to believe the rumors when @Seeley Pichardo was telling him that it was back, but since there were try outs he was actually excited about it. Just looking around and seeing that people who were trying out were not people that were on the team before, which worried him.

It seems that there were people that had not thought about doing quidditch before but where out here.

He was the oldest person here and wished that @Damien Belizaire was here but he already said thank you, next. So no point of thinking he would want to come out and play. But that wasn’t going to stop him from trying and maybe even become captain.

The only issue was, he didn’t know what he was supposed to be doing at this time.

She kept following the other students who ran a lap around the whole pitch. She was able to keep up with them and grab a broom at the same time. Jacquetta then waited to see what they did. It seemed they would go from station to station to complete the tasks. She took off into the air, flying around until a station opened up. Or were they all supposed to go at the same time? Were they being timed? She really should have paid more attention at the beginning of this. She would get better, though! Now that she knew she wasn’t doing her best at listening, she could get better! Right?

Josie did not remember signing up for quidditch.  She did remember telling @Madam Wilde-Hextor that she had no intention of signing up for the house team during the first flying lesson.  Josie knew she signed up for a lot of things during that first week or two but she swore she did NOT sign up for the quidditch team.  So why did she get a message to report for practice and tryouts?  Her brother might have?  She'd ask him when she saw him at the practice.  Or maybe Seeley?  Nah, Seeley wouldn't do that to her.

Josie didn't have anymore time to think on it as the official called out for Hufflepuff and she had to take off running down the pitch to grab a broom.

As he was flying around he was trying to see if someone else he knew might come sign up, like Seeley or even Cordelia but he didn’t see them at all, but what he did see was his sister there. He flew over towards her. “Josie, I thought you didn’t want to do quidditch.” Remembering that she made a big deal about it in one of the flying lessons, the first one if he remember correctly. Seeing her there it made him smile.

“Do you remember much about the game?” He was sure she could remember things about it since their grandfather took them all the time to games over the summer, but he was never sure if his sister was paying attention to them or just wanted to go since Desmond was there.

"I don't?" she replied to her brother when he flew over to her.  "All I know is I got a message saying that I had to report for tryouts and practice this morning and when I looked at the list, I was signed up for it.  I don't remember signing up for it though!" she explained to Desmond.  Darn it!  Did he have to look so happy about her being there?  Now she definitely couldn't quit.

At his question, she gave a funny grin and laughed.  "Uhhhh, none of it?" she answered.  "I usually just sit there knitting and when I see someone score, if you and grandpa cheered, I cheered," Josie explained.  That was why she hadn't planned to tryout in the first place.  She was rather clueless about the technicalities of quidditch.

Viktoriya ran as quick as her legs could take her, and even the weather couldn't keep the excited grin off of her face. She wanted to get the lap over with as soon as she possibly could so that she could then hop onto a broomstick and get flying! She wanted to show them that she could catch a snitch like nobody's business, or dodge those bludgers and avoid getting sent to the Hospital Wing.

By the time she got to the broomsticks and was ready to tackle the different stations, her adrenaline was pumping on high, and she wanted to do this.

Plus, finally being on a broomstick as she shot up into the air, she could show them that sometimes being short meant you could be totally aerodynamic. This was gonna be perfect and there was no way Viktoriya was going to think otherwise.

The chasing station opened up and Jacquetta flew to take up the spot. She caught the quaffle from someone (she had no idea who it was) and then lobbed it at the hoops. It hit one of the rings and fell towards the ground. “That wasn’t a bad first try!” she said out loud. She didn’t care if people heard her psyching herself up. Positive energy was a good thing! The quaffle was returned to her and she tried again. She got it through one of the lower hoops and smiled. “Do I keep going?” she asked no one in particular. She wasn’t sure how long she was supposed to stay at each place.

"You have any idea who signed me up?" she asked her brother but, before she could get an answer, she had to take off on the broom and head to the chasing station behind Jacquetta.  Having no clue what being at the chasing station meant, she watched her housemate carefully to see what the girl was doing.  "Seems simple enough," she said, more to herself than anyone.  Josie thought she might hover off to the side to watch another person do it to be sure.

No such luck because suddenly a quaffle was thrown in her direction.  "Oof!" she commented as she caught it between her arm and chest.  Now what was she supposed to do with it?

Jacquetta decided that since she had scored one goal, it was time to move on. Josie was waiting her turn, anyway. The Hufflepuff sped off towards the keeping station. Obviously she had to show if she could block or not. She wasn’t sure this was where her strengths were but she’d do her best. She floated around the hoops, waiting for someone to attempt a goal. Soon, a quaffle was flying at her. She flew forward and tried to catch it but it bounced off her hands to the ground. That was better than it going in the hoops, right? So she was moderately successful for that one.

His sister didn’t sign up? And yet she was told to be here. That was a bit strange. “I didn’t do it, but since you are out here. Let’s have a little fun. Maybe you should have paid a but more attention when we had at home games.” He laughed knowing that this wasn’t her thing but he was happy that she was out here, it did make him simple.

Hearing that she didn’t know anything about it. “I can tell you that things if you have questions, but first we have to show that we want to be here. So I am going to throw this quaffle at you and I want you to catch it.” Hoping that she would be able to do two things at the same time. Holding onto the broom and catching the quaffle at the same time.

He also should see what others are doing, but he also needed to help Josie.

Now she was off to the beating station. She grabbed a bat and chased around the bludgers. Wait. Should she wait for a bludger to come towards her? Maybe that would be better. She floated in the air and waited. And waited. And then one was coming close-ish to her so she flew towards it. She brought the bat back and hit it off towards someone else. WAIT. Only her potential teammates were on the pitch at the moment. What if someone got hit? “Watch out!” she yelled in case it would help them avoid her mistake. Quidditch was proving to be a little more difficult than she had anticipated.

Fly on the broom and let people try to hit you with bludgers, he said.  It'll be fun, he said.  Rrrright!  But it was obvious that Des was happy so there was no way Josie was going to tell her big brother that she was not going to stay out there.  He did help her at that first dueling club meeting after all.  She was fairly sure gifting him a tub of burn paste was not going to make him as happy as trying out.

"Thanks," she said when he lobbed a quaffle at her.  At least the broom didn't go sideways.  With that, she began to fly towards the three hoops and see if she could throw that thing anywhere near one.  Through it would be icing on the proverbial cake.

Kate was excited, a little ball of joy as she walked out towards the Quidditch pitch. She wore some old Quidditch robes with the Hufflepuff crest on them. They were a faded and dirty yellow, that made Katherine look far too pale. And they smelled worse than the stables on the edge of the land her family owned. And she knew what those stables smelled like--rank and disgusting. Who knew thestrals and horses could smell so bad. That was exactly what her old hand-me-down jersey smelled like. Clearly it had been in the corner of the locker room for years.

She arrived on the pitch, perhaps a couple minutes late. Her bad, and she owned it. She spotted an older boy, some Potter kid that meant everyone in the world should be jealous for his good genes. "Erm, excuse me!" she called, hands coned around her mouth to carry the sound far enough, she hoped to get his attention. "Where would you like me?!" she asked, picking up an old Cleansweep model broom and mounting it. She kicked off the grass, and hovered in the air for a minute.

If ever it was possible to do a bank or ricochet shot in quidditch, Josie may have just accomplished that as she threw the quaffle toward the hoops.  She watched as the quaffle bounced off one hoop, then bounced off another hoop which ricocheted it toward a pole.  The quaffle bounced off the pole and began heading toward the third hoop.  Josie watched all this wondering if that was what it was supposed to be doing.  Seeing it head toward the hoops one more time, she mentally began changing 'go through it' to herself.  Unfortunately, the ball just bounced of the last hoop and back to Josie.

This was weird, she felt. Hovering there like some bump on a floating log. At home she always played with her siblings. There was always a spot for her on the team, so to speak--and there were certainly enough members in the family to have a whole Quidditch team at home on the half pitch they had in the backyard. Was it the best way to play Quidditch? No, but it was all they had to work with, and it was good enough. Those poor hoops in the backyard would spend the rest of the year bearing the elements. All alone.

She looked over across the pitch, and decided she was just going to get right to it. “Hey Josie!” she called out to her dorm mate. “Pass!” she said, urging her broom forward towards the Quidditch hoops.

There was a chasing station?  Addy was all about that life.  She knew that was the part of the game she was best at.   "Come on!" She yelled out to her roommate and waved her hand in the air in @Pandora Midnight's direction, then motioned towards the hoops.  "Let's go take some shots!"

After all, scoring goals was one of the most important things they would need to do, unless one of them wound up playing seeker.  And of course, the last thought on Addy's mind was that they wouldn't make the team.  No, she already was counting on it.  She and Panda were going to rule the team one day, she'd already decided.

Josie tried to one arm catch the ball and ended up grabbing the broomstick instead when she began to roll sideways.  "Whoa!" she called out even though the command would not work on a broom.  Making a mental note to research later if it was possible to add responsive verbal commands besides 'up' to the broom's abilities, Josie righted herself and decided maybe she was better off trying to see what kind of damage what she could do at the keeper station.  With that she headed over in that direction and looked around to see what kind of equipment she needed to pick up for that.
