I found love where it wasn't supposed to be; right in front of me

Roxanne Alders

Roxanne chomped down on another biscuit, her eyes following her son, Declan, as he ran around on the nearby playground. He was playing pirates with some of the other kids there - she could tell, because he was wearing his eyepatch. A light smile came to her features before her eyes drifted elsewhere, to her companion for the day, Britney.

She and Britney had been dating steadily for a couple of years now, and she genuinely enjoyed being in the healer’s presence. They both had similar energies, and Roxy also liked that Britney had accepted Declan wholeheartedly. They’d had a picnic that day, of which she was still munching on the food left.

As she sat on the blanket next to Britney, Roxy had not a care in the world. Things seemed good; pure. “Are you as happy as I am?” Roxy asked Britney, feeling buoyant as she removed another biscuit (chocolate chip; the best kind), and offered it to her girlfriend.

Time loves to get away from people, and sometimes it is spending it with someone that is amazing and you don’t mind that time gets away. That was today, the healer was sitting with her girlfriend of a few years and watching her girlfriends son play with the other kids and she just smiled. While she didn’t have kids of her own, Roxanne son was close enough.

To think that they meet at a gala a few years ago, and now they were just sitting there together having a small snack and watching her son play. With it being a nice day, they were sitting on a blanket snacking on some of the food that was left. Britney had placed her hand on top of Roxanne’s and smiled.

When she asked if Britney was as happy as she was, Britney smiled and looked at her girlfriend. “I am, this is perfect right here.” She looked at her and leaned in to give her a small kiss, right after that she took the biscuit and took a bit of it. “It is nice to spend days like this together when I am off.” It was something she enjoyed and wished that she was able to have more of these days.

Roxy smiled even more widely as Britney answered. For a while after graduation, Roxy hadn’t known if she’d ever find true happiness. Isolating herself from the magical world until Cam had drawn her back in had only enhanced her loneliness, but now… now she had friendships she could rely upon again. And she had… this. She easily returned Britney’s kiss, thinking of how different things were from how they had been back in her early 20’s.

She had never really had a long-lasting relationship until now. And now, to have Britney who was always there when she needed her… it was an adjustment, but a good one. And Britney and Declan got along great.

“I agree,” Roxy told Britney eagerly, finding that this seemed like a good time to broach the subject that had been on her mind for a while now. “Where do you think our future is going? I mean… I’m happy as we are… but I wanted to know. Do you see us ever moving in together? Getting married?” It took courage to ask, but Roxy wanted to know. She was a go-with-the-flow gal, and she’d easily oblige continuing on as they were, but she thought it was best they were both on the same page.

For a while, after she left healer school, she went traveling for a while. Knowing that she needed to get out of the London area and explore. She never had the luck of dating for a long time, but that was in the past and now in her mid 30s she was the happiest that she has ever been in her life. Knowing that back in her Hogwarts days, they were all leading up to this. Feeling Roxy kiss her, it always placed a smile on her face, and she knew that she made the right choose to choosing to date her.

The last long time relationship she had was Ben, but that was back when she was at Hogwarts, and that was so long ago. She just couldn’t think of it as much more as her getting thrown into the world of dating, and she was his best friend before they started Hogwarts.

Crazy how times have changed so much.

Holding her hand as they watched her son run away, she was ready to hear the words that Roxy was saying to her. It has been something on her mind for a while, but she just didn’t know how to bring it up. But Roxy bring it up, made it easier to talk about. “Roxanne Alders, are you asking me to marry you?” She smiled at her girlfriend, knowing that wasn’t what she was doing. “I would love to marry you and move in with you. I would love to be in your arms at night after a long day at work.”

Britney knew that this conversation would happen at some point, they been dating for a long time, she was shocked that it wasn’t something that came up sooner in their relationship. Britney could see herself getting married to Roxanne and living a long happy life with her.

Marriage? Roxy paused, because she hadn’t really been insinuating she wanted to take that step, yet. Though thinking about it now, she realized that if that was something Britney really wanted to push for, she didn’t think the answer would necessarily be no. Actually, the more she thought about it, especially as Britney elaborated, Roxanne found herself warming to the idea. Moving in, getting married, whatever order that happened in seemed okay with Roxy.

“I like the sound of that,” She told Britney honestly, reaching up with her free hand to tuck a strand of hair behind her girlfriend’s ear. “I’ve always kinda had marriage in the back of my mind, but it didn’t really feel like something that would ever happen for me, especially after I had Declan,” Roxanne explained.

“But you’re so great with him, and…” Roxy trailed off, looking over to where Declan was still trouncing around, this time climbing up to the lowest branches of a tree, completely unmindful of the serious conversation going on. “...I can’t imagine not being with you,” The blonde admitted, meeting Britney’s eyes once more. “You think your place would be better than mine?” Roxy asked curiously, thinking of her small flat above the herbology shop. It worked for just her and Declan, but adding a third person there might get a little… tight.

Thinking about getting married wasn’t something that was ever on her mind, not till she had been with Roxy for a while, but she didn’t know how to go about that at all. She just let the flow of their relationship just go where ever it was going. Things were going well with them, and getting married wouldn’t be horrible, moving in together wouldn’t be horrible, they would just get more time together when Britney was off work and that was something she would love to have happen.

Feeling her hand push the hair behind her ear, it was a nice feeling. “I like the sound of that also.” She smiled, “I was always busy working I didn’t think I would be able to find anyone. And than you showed up and changed everything.” She did, and it was something that she loved.

She didn’t know how she would be with kids, she never thought about having any kids at all. Though she loved Roxy son, he was fun to be around and was a good boy. She couldn’t picture herself not being able to see him grow up. And that was something she didn’t want to miss out. “I can’t imagine it also. Moments like this are my favorite and being able to wake up next to you would be the best feeling in the world.”

Who would have pictured at 35, was she 35 the years have gotten away from her, that she would be ready. “I think it would be a good place for the three of us.” Her flat was bigger than Roxy’s was, “I have an extra bed room, that isn’t being used for anything.” Making it into a kids room would be the perfect thing to do.

Of course Roxanne couldn’t imagine Britney staying single forever. Herself? Yes, but Britney was a catch. Even if her job kept her busy, the woman beside her was driven, and full of compassion. She most certainly wouldn’t be alone, even if she and Roxy hadn’t found each other. Roxy was only glad that things had worked out so well between them thus far. Despite Britney’s busy work schedule, they always found time when it mattered most.

And now? Entertaining the idea of moving in together promised even more time spent together.

“So we’re really going to do it? Move in together?” Roxy inquired brightly, her smile matching her tone as it lit up her face. “Do you think we could let Declan choose his own decorations?” Roxy asked, imagining the ways they could set up Britney’s spare room for Declan to have all his own. He of course already had his own room at her place, but her flat above the shop was small and not really fit for allowing a young boy to really spread out.

It would, however, make a very good office space after she was finally able to move out. “Though I should warn you, he might want to make it entirely pirate themed,” Roxy tacked on, laughing lightly at the idea of it. She could imagine it now, Declan picking out a blue color than matched the sea, and proceeding to decorate it with ships and pirate flags.

For a long time Britney had been alone, knowing that she wasn’t someone that dated a whole lot. There was a few people that she dated at Hogwarts, but that was back than. Many years ago. It was almost a life time ago, and than there were a few people that she did date while she was traveling around the world, but nothing lasted long at all.

But hearing that they were going to do this, move in together. She couldn’t have thought that nothing else could be better. This was something that she wanted.

“We are.” She smiled, the biggest smile that she has had on her face in a long time. It was something she thought about, but wouldn’t know how she was able to bring it up at all and make it happen, but it was. “He should be the only one that picks the decorations for his room, since it is going to be his room. It should be something he would love to sleep in.” This was something she was happy about, making the spare room be a kids room.

She always wanted kids, and Declan might not be hers by blood. But she loved that little boy. “What ever he wants, he can have.” Britney didn’t care at all, she knew that if he wanted all pirate themed, that would be perfect. “And we can also pick out things for our room.” That wasn’t something that she ever thought that she would think about saying at all. Their room. It had such a nice ring to it.

Roxanne smiled, wondering how Declan would react to this news. She was sure he’d be thrilled. He loved Britney and was well familiar with the woman’s house. Of course, being able to tell him he could decorate his room however he wanted would certainly put the cherry on top. She could just imagine him picking out the paint (hopefully nothing to garish), and then all the decorations, trying to make his room his own.

“He’ll love that,” Roxy told Britney, her hand moving up to run through Britney’s hair. “He’s going to want a boat for a bed if you let him have anything he wants, though,” The curly-haired girl laughed, imagining trying to move a boat into his room. He’d adore it, but it wasn’t exactly practical.

“Does that mean you’ll let our room be pirate themed too?” Roxy asked, pausing for Britney’s reaction before she added, “Kidding. But it would be fun, wouldn’t it? Should we go get Declan and tell him the news?” Roxy asked, looking back over to where Declan was still running amuck, a giggle erupting from his lips as he slid down the slide on the playset.

This was the best day of her life, she as finally going to be able to have her girlfriend at home each night when she slept that that was something that she was going to just love so much. And knowing that there would be a sweet little kid in her, their house running around. The quit wouldn’t be there anymore.

“I know he will.” Which was something that she couldn’t wait for him to know. Feeling Roxy’s hands in her hair it was going to be nice. “What is wrong with a boat as a bed.” Britney laughed knowing that she couldn’t do that. It wouldn’t be able to fit into her house. At lest she didn’t think that it would.

“If the was what you wanted.” Se laughed knowing that she was joking. “We can change my room to from the plain room to something that we both will love.” Giving her a sweet kiss and than standing up. “Well we shall go tell him the good news.” Smiling back at her and waiting for her hand so they could tell Declan the good news.
