Truth in Gossip

Aurorette Labelle

Aurorette and Evangeline needed some best friend catch up time and when a semi-nice day (apparently rare in Scotland) came about, the brunette knew that they should sit by the lake and get as much sun as they could since they might not see it again until they returned to France. “How can it be so miserable all the time? Don’t they hate their own weather?” she wondered aloud as they found a place to sit.

She had brought a blanket since she didn’t know what kind of stuff would be on the grounds here. She spread it out and took a seat. The lake, she had to admit, was nice. It glistened in the sun and almost reminded her of the ocean. If only it was the ocean. She missed the salt water smell and the gentle breeze. Part of her wanted to go home but she was there for a reason. She would be champion.

There were a lot of people on the grounds today, no doubt taking their chance at a nice day the way they had. She couldn’t imagine living in a place like this all the time. It was dismay and dreary and made her sad. She loved color and sunshine! How did the Hogwarts students survive this? She shook her head to herself and turned to her best friend. “So… have you found a boy yet?

Every day was a new experience for Evangeline. One day, she was being whisked away by carriage to a foreign land, the next she was in a party at the Great Hall with dozens of other students. It was crazy how much her life had changed in just a few short days.  She had so much more experiences, and was probably catching up to her sister. Maybe, she would soon surpass her. The Hogwarts curriculum was solid, even though classes were held in a damp castle. Aurorette had summoned her for a catchup, which Evangeline was happy to oblige. There had been many interesting things happening, and it was time to talk.

"No, not yet, although there are plenty of cute Durmstrang boys. It's still too early, I don't know any of them well enough yet." She said, in French. Catalan and French were not too difficult to switch between when conversing, as she had to speak in both due to Mika. "How about you?"

Aurorette was happy to be doing nothing. They had been so busy for days and she needed a break. Plus, she had missed her gossiping sessions with her best friend. She couldn’t go too long without some gossip. It was like what kept her going. Instead of coffee or tea, Rettie had gossip. She lived for it and it kept her interested in things. People thought she was mean when she gossips but most of the time, what she said was true. How could people be upset with her for stating facts?

There are certainly some cute boys,” she replied. “But I’m with Remy. At least for now. We’ll see how long that lasts with so much other eye candy around.” She didn’t elaborate that she meant that Remy would likely break up with her and not the other way around. She really liked him but he flirted with other girls and she knew it.

A bird soared overhead and she pointed it out to Evangeline. It was different than the ones at home and she thought it was worth looking at. When she went back to looking about the grounds, she spotted a very good looking Hogwarts boy. “Evangeline, look… he could be the one for you!” She might have to go about setting the blonde up on a date. What a perfect idea!

Everything at Hogwarts was foreign, from the grass, to the lake, to the trees. Even the boys were foreign, and spoke a different language than she did. It was intriguing, and Evangeline wanted to know all of their secrets. As each student passed, she wondered what friendship problems they had, what their lives were like. It was in a completely different language, but still, they were the same experiences.

"That's wonderful, Aurorette." She noted. Then Aurorette pointed out a rather good looking boy, and Evangeline blushed. "Uh...How old do you think he is I can't be seen with a third year boy."  Evangeline wanted to be very careful about who she associated with at Hogwarts, as she knew nothing of their ages.

"Listen,  I was thinking, we have a whole new world of people to explore. Do you ever wonder, what their lives are like? We obviously have different languages, and it might be better to hear their gossip straight from their side, but only we can read it! Then we'd be in the know about EVERYTHING! It could be like... a drop box!" Genius. Simply genius.

She didn’t mention that she was already reconsidering things with Remy. She’d met her pen pal of years earlier, Rolph. She’d never seen him in person and when she said, everything had changed. Her breathing had changed, her heart had sped up, and she’d blushed like crazy. There had been… something. Maybe it was just the excitement of having finally met him face-to-face, but she couldn’t be sure. Plus, there’s been something off with Remy for awhile.

He is definitely older. Maybe you should go talk to him!” she said and raised her eyebrows at her best friend. She was glad they could talk and gossip. She needed the distraction. She would think about Remy and Rolph and everything that came with them later. For now, she wanted to relax and spend time with Evangeline.

The other girl spoke and Aurorette looked at her, nodding her head. “That is a good idea. I think we should do it… imagine what we’ll learn.” She had always wanted to know more about wizards from other places and now was her chance. And maybe they’d get some good gossip out of it. She grinned at the blonde and said, “We might be geniuses.”
