Headmistress McGonagall

The Sorting Feast

Headmistress McGonagall

Hogwarts was the place where Minerva McGonagall had spent a great deal of her life. It would most likely give her a homelike feeling every time she set foot on the grounds. The comfortable warmth settled around her despite being immediately greeted with traumatic news: a Triwizard Tournament to be held on her watch. The last one she had born witness to brought on nightmares of everything that followed it. However, such things were out of her control and had carefully been left unmentioned in her acquiescence to return. Like every other obstacle in life - she would persevere.

With her customary emerald pointed hat, Minerva smiled with thin lips throughout the Sorting Ceremony, clapping equally for each sorted student. The only exception was a certain @Avery Potter, the grandchild of Harry and great-grandchild of James… and yet another potential magnet for trouble. Her equanimous clap was delayed slightly by a sigh, a silent ‘Merlin, give me strength’ and a harsh reminder of her age.

As the last new student took their seat with their Hogwarts family, Minerva rose to greet them, smiling and recalling Albus’s more colorful speeches. “Good evening and welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. For those of you returning to school, you may notice a few new faces at the head table tonight, the first of which being mine. I am Headmistress McGonagall, formerly professor of Transfiguration. I've taught many of your parents (she carefully did not mention grand or great-grandparents) and I look forward to the coming year. I expect brilliance from such a group of students as I see before me.”

“Please take a moment and thank @Professor Gawkrodger, who will be returning to his role as Deputy Headmaster after admirably performing the duties of Headmaster. A hearty welcome to @Professor Meadows, @Professor Featherstone, and @Professor Santiago, who will be instructing you in Charms and Potions. And finally, congratulations to all the new prefects and to the Head Boy and Head Girl, @Silas Harding-Clarke and @Addison Toft

Pausing for applause for the worthy parties, Minerva politely waited for the next announcement and its reaction, though the Daily Prophet had surely hinted enough. “I would like to remind everyone that the rules of Hogwarts are made to be followed, and that the Forbidden Forest is forbidden to all students. Additionally, there will be some changes to those rules this year, and an increased amount of security at Hogwarts. The Quidditch Cup will also not be awarded this year, due to another event that will be disrupting the use of the pitch.” She carefully ignored a rather abrupt outburst from the Slytherin House table.

“I have the pleasure,” she hid a grimace behind a tight-lipped smile, masked it further by leveling a considering glance at Slytherin House, “of announcing the return of the Triwizard Tournament to Hogwarts. In light of the damage to Beauxbatons, a delegation of students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang will be arriving in October. I am sure that we at Hogwarts will treat our guests with the utmost respect. Especially those of you which are of age to represent the school in competition.” This time she slid her considering gaze to her own house of Gryffindor.

"But that's enough of that for this evening." Or ever? Yes ever, in her opinion. "Stomachs at the ready? You may eat." She clapped her hands together once and the tables all filled with innumerable gastric delights.

Rían O' Donnell

Rían took his seat at the Ravenclaw table. He was keeping sketch for @Avery Potter. But couldn't see her. He wasn't even sure what house she had gone to in all the commotion.

He slid his lanky over sized body into a slot, hoping he could just hide out here and eventually slink off. HE didn't care for any sort of fun never mind the Triwizard tournament.

Clayton Stagg

Clayton glanced at Juan when he was told there wouldn't be any Quidditch. If there was one thing Clayton wanted to see, it was Juan playing Quidditch. He loved that sport. "We can hold a protest or kidnap her and hold her hostage until she puts Quidditch back on the table for you." Clayton reassured the fourth year. "If we write enough strongly worded letters they'll have to allow it back."

Clarissa Perenge

Clarissa hesitated a moment before she walked over to the clapping table. She'd kind of hoped to be put in Gryffindor. Not that there was anything wrong with Slytherin. It was just that, no one in her family had ever been put in Slytherin. Her family was already disappointed in her behaviour as it was. Would they be disappointed that she was in Slytherin? Squaring her shoulders and holding her head up high, Clarissa walked over to the table. She decided at that moment that it didn't matter. And it was kind of cool to be different from the rest of the family. She'd heard someone once use the phrase 'the black sheep of the family' and she wondered if she fell into that category. Slytherin's had snakes too and snakes were cool. At least the ones that didn't poison you, but the little ones? They were cool. And at least she wasn't sorted with the nerdy Ravenclaw's or the push-overs in Hufflepuff. She glanced over to where Alyssa was sitting at the Hufflepuff table. She'd been at the Slytherin table moments before for some reason.

"Hi everyone," Clarissa said once she was seated.

Outward she was friendly, but inwardly she was judging her tablemates. Were they annoying or would they be great people to hang out with? And why did that one girl have a pink bow in her hair? She was Slytherin!

Panda

Tonight was the night. Tonight was owl Christmas. More people fud than a single bird could ever handle, and lots of new tiny children to share it.

"HOOT!" hooted Panda emphatically, and began hopping from plate to plate, table to table, in search of handouts. He concentrated on familiar faces and the newest littlest students. He fluttered his wings and hooted sweetly, making adoring eyes at any students who looked willing to share.

((Welcome! Please feed the owl. Any student may post feeding Panda anything at any time. He is partial to candy.))

Tamsin Sauvigni

Tami was more than a little disappointed to hear that there wasn't going to be any quidditch this year. Originally she had been uncertain about signing up for the team, and had been too late in her first year. After some encouragement from other people;  especially some she had met in the dueling chamber though, she was prepared to put her name down this time.

Only this time, it wasn't happening! The timing couldn't have been worse. Now she would have to wait yet another year for the opportunity.

For now though, she could console her grief by watching the sorting, and enjoying the feast which was to follow. Watching the sorting? This time last year she was part of that line up, now she would be witnessing a new set of students as they were sorted into their respective houses. Where had the time gone? She looked at the group who had formed a queue before the sorting hat, wondering which of them might be joining her in Gryffindor.

Kirk Lawson

There was a clatter at the Slytherin table during the announcement, because... seriously? AGAIN?

No Quidditch? In my year? It's more likely than you think!

"YOU'VE GOT TO BE FLACKING KIDDING ME, YOU MOTHE--" Kirk was sat back down, somewhat unceremoniously, by Luke and Kieran on either side of him. The rest of his outburst was smothered into Luke's manly, manly chest. Kieran patted Kirk's arm as it was the only thing he could probably reach while Kirk was being smothered in pecs he couldn't even appreciate because Quidditch had just been cancelled again.

Morty heard exactly two words. NO and QUIDDITCH.

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!" she yelped, and her chest went hollow as she faced down the prospect of yet another missed season.

Kelby Matos

Kelby was positive that this is what dying of hunger felt like.

Her stomach rumbled with a need for food, but this ceremony was taking forever. She watched each of the people she had tolerated thus far sorted into the same house. And when it was her turn, she was sent to the opposite side of the hall with people she could not stand. When they got to the end of the alphabet, Kelby visibly cringed when Kay was sorted into her house. She was not going to safe ever again.

That girl was going to be her roommate? She wouldn't even be safe when she went to sleep each night!

Kelby refused to have to sleep in the same room. Panic swept over her, distracting her from the speech that was occurring until-

"...that the Forbidden Forest is forbidden to all students. Additionally, there will be some changes to those rules this year, and an increased amount of security at Hogwarts."

Kelby grinned to herself. She could figure out the whole sleeping thing later, but for now, she needed more information on this whole forest situation.

Stephanie Eckland

Steph was a little disappointed that the hat couldn't answer her question, but she wasn't really all that surprised. The hat had been provided for one purpose alone. It may be a deep thinker, but its thoughts were focused on a single question. She wasn't at all surprised to be sorted into Ravenclaw either; she was expecting it. Steph had read a great deal about Hogwarts, she knew its history and she knew about the four houses. She had already come to the conclusion that Ravenclaw was the perfect fit, and the hat agreed.

She heard the cheering from the Ravenclaw table, as the hat announced her location, and she smiled back at them as the hat was removed from her head as she walked over to join her new house mates at the Ravenclaw table. "Hello, I'm Steph" she greeted the person sitting next to her. Even though she had been sorted, she was still curious to see who else might be joining her though, especially @Willa Mercier She really wanted Willa to join her here. The two of them had hinted that it would be nice to be sorted into the same house. Was it going to happen?

"..... OHHHHHH. That's what you're upset about... Quidditch. Didn't seem to bother you so much when Quidditch was cancelled for that other tournament."

Avery Potter

She felt a surge of relief the moment that the sorting hat shouted out Hufflepuff. All Avery wanted was the chance to follow her own path. She wanted to be separated from her brother, from the stereotypical Gryffindor!Potter that followed the family around, and to be somewhere comfortable. After taking her seat at the new table she had been assigned too, Avery took a look around for @Rían O' Donnell

It was then she noticed who was speaking. @Headmistress McGonagall? Like... the same witch who had been there a billion years ago with her grandparents? How amazing was that?

Drew was, naturally, already eating, but he politely swallowed a bite of ham and stuck out his hand to @Stephanie Eckland.

"Hi! Drew Knight," he greeted, "Welcome to Ravenclaw!"

Alyssa Hoofer

Back again and she felt at home. It was hard to believe that she'd actually fantasized about leaving Hogwarts to live on that beach in Florida. How could she even consider any of that? The Great Hall looked as breath-taking as usual. The lit candles floated above their heads as usual, and reflected in the golden plates in front of them. She was home. She hadn't realized just how much she'd missed the castle until she'd arrived in the Entrance Hall. She looked around the Hufflepuff table at all the familiar faces.

She'd gone over to the Slytherin table momentarily to make a bet, but she was back now and she'd won some money. She wondered how her parents would feel knowing she'd bet? Clarissa had been sorted into Slytherin which was a relief to her. They'd been separated which is what she'd been hoping for. She didn't have to deal with her bossy friend almost 24/7. She was Slytherin's problem, and Alyssa pitied them.

Alyssa sat up when Professor McGonagall made the start of feast announcements. Though she was usually quiet and wasn't prone to making outbursts, she let out a yell of outrage when she mentioned that Quidditch wouldn't take place that year. She'd played in the final game the year before and it had been so much fun! She'd planned to sign up right away this year.

"Why not?" She ended her outburst with but her question was almost answered immediately.

The Tri-Wizard Tournament was going to be at Hogwarts!? So that was the big secret!

"Ooh!" She shouted. "It's worth it! So that was mum and dad's big secret!"

She knew William and Cameron would be so jealous. She wondered how Clarissa was taking the News. She glanced over at the Slytherin table to locate her friend.

Cordelia Waldegrave

Cordelia had the sinking feeling that quidditch was canceled because someone *cough* @Professor Qin *cough* had some concerns about Cordelia potentially murdering someone with her new found position of power. Sure Qin made her Prefect, but Cordelia had two feet firmly on the ground for Prefecting duties.

Alvis Anderson

Alvis slid next to his fell Lions at the Gryffindor table and was soon later joined by his good friend @Aiden Hunter! ''Aiden your a lion to, YES!'' he stud up to give him a pat on the back before turning to the older students and giving a few high fives and waves, ''Howdy doodley do!''

Once everyone had been sorted the hall calmed just enough for the Headmistress to give a speech and give them some news.

''OH WOW! What's a triwizard tournament? Oh and where is the forest?'' he gave a quick wink to Aiden.

Damaris Denton

Damaris grumbled under her breath and then crossed her arms. “I wasn’t on the team before,” she whined and then dramatically leaned her head against the table. This wasn’t fair. This random lady had come to ban Quidditch. Now Gryffindor would keep the Cup for an extra year with no challenge whatsoever.

Altair Shafiq

Al was sitting at the Gryffindor table anxiously waiting for the feast to start. He was ready to eat his body weight in the sorting feast shepards pie. However, that all changed with the announcement of the cancellation of Quidditch. Al's eyes  bulged at the news and his head swivled to the head table.

They had just gotten Quidditch back. This was one hundred percent unacceptable. Al stood up and stormed to the front table. He didn't care who was watching.

"What do you mean Quidditch is cancelled you old bat. Uncancel it. We just had a canceled season like two years ago. We have seventh years who are missing their last season."

Aiden Hunter

Aiden looked over at @Alvis Anderson, he was happy to have been sorted in the same house as him. The Tri-Wizard Tournament interested him, but he was somewhat sad that he wouldn't be able to compete. The forest on the other hand...

He looked at Alvis, "Listen, we'll try to figure something out about that forest later. I'm definitely curious."

Hatty Hambeldon

Hatty was not of age, something that she was sure her uncle was thankful for. Because he would not have liked her entering her name though she probably wouldn't have even if she was of age. Bad enough had been his reaction during the school tournament. Instead, however, she could enjoy the year and the tournament from the sidelines. And that was more than fine with her as of this moment. What was exciting to her first and foremost was the fact that they would be having students from other wizarding schools here.

"I'm kind of excited to meet foreign wizards," she said. "Doesn't that seem cool?"

Kaleb Kennedy

Kaleb missed the news about Quidditch being canceled because he was speechless over who had returned as a Headmistress for Hogwarts. It was THE Minerva McGonagall! How did they manage that??

The Gryffindor boy sat at the Gryffindor table, his mouth wide open, completely speechless. Maybe she would come and talk to him since he was a Gryffindor like she was! How cool would that be?!

Juan elbowed @Clayton Stagg, "You touch her and we end up on the Daily Prophet with a reward sign under our names. She's a living legend, you dolt. You touch one hair on her head, and we're through." He returned his glance towards the amazing woman and felt his heart aflutter. Imagine getting to be the most legendary woman in history. Everyone else was irrelevant in his eyes.

"I LOVE YOU MCGONAGALL!"
