character development: questionnaires

Questionnaire #1

  • What is your favorite color?                Celadon. It reminds her of sea foamwhat she thinks sea foam should look like, anyway. She first saw it in an art gallery once: old pottery in a lovely light green, and the color has stuck with her since. It's not a color one often finds out and about, and that is even more of a reason for Morwenna to treasure it.
  • If you could be any animal, what would you be? In truth, Morwenna wouldn't want to be an animal, at least not permanently. Humans, and magical humans at that, have a good chance at survival, while other animals either hunters or the hunted. She sees their lives as inconvenienced by so many different factors, even if they have something she doesn't. Birds can fly anywhere, but fall victim to a cat; tigers and crocodiles are apex predators, but their lives sound boring and they can't really do much else besides eat and... whatever else it is they do. As a witch, Morwenna can find fulfillment in many places without too many obstacles, and she doesn't think she'd ever trade it for being another animal.
  • What is something you're really good at? Staying focused and following through when she sets her heart on something. Making her room look clean without too much effort. Finding things other people really want to keep hidden. Braiding hair.
  • What superpower do you wish you had? Invulnerability or enhanced senses.
  • What household chore do you hate to do? Most of them, but especially dusting or cleaning floors.
  • What new talent or skill would you learn if you had the chance? Any new language, especially a difficult one. There are many reasons, but Morwenna wants one less barrier to communicating with all sorts of people and understanding all parts of the world.
  • If you could change your name, what would you change it to? Morwenna has thought about it, but she isn't sure if she'd actually go through with changing her name. She's the only Morwenna she's ever met, and part of her like that. But other times, she envies anyone with a name that's more common, but not too common. Short names are nice, like Cate or Mae or Zoe.
  • What is your favorite type of weather? Cloudy days, but without cold and precipitation. She sometimes likes storms, but only if she's inside and watching from a window.
  • What's your favorite thing about your room? Lots of things: it's almost always warm, it has a window with a nice view on sunny mornings, and it's relatively easy to clean when her father bugs her about it. Her favorite favorite thing is the huge dry-erase board her father found for her and installed in there a year or so ago. It's almost always covered with words and doodles, and they change from day to day.
  • Would you rather play outside or inside? Outside, but it's not a strong preference.
  • What did you get for your last birthday? A couple of books of abridged myths from around the world, cookies for days, and socks. (She loved the socks most.)
  • What is your favorite food? Nothing compares to salmon, especially grilled salmon, but Morwenna doesn't have it often.
  • Do you share a room? With who? No.
  • If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? There are so many places, she could hardly pick just one. The answer would change regularly. Today's answer: Venice, and for the simple reason that she wants to experience what a city of canals is really like.
  • What do you want to be when you grow up? Morwenna doesn't really understand the range of adult jobs that are out there (or doesn't care to) so she doesn't have a frame of reference for what she could realistically do. She doesn't want to have to have a job; what she really wants is to just go everywhere, see everything for herself, and be able to live off of those experiences.
  • Where do you want to live when you grow up? She isn't sure that she wants to live in just one place, but she loves the idea of living in a city where the old meets the new. Surrounded by so much, but without everyone knowing your business.
  • Where did you go on your last vacation? Her grandparents took her on a week-long trip to Bath last spring. She doesn't remember ever leaving the UK; her father doesn't like to travel much. Her mother's trips have always for work lately, with little time to entertain her. Her mother promises Morwenna can go with her when she's older.
  • What is something that scares you? Bugs, confined spaces, public speaking.
  • What do you want for your next birthday? Watercolors, postcards to decorate her room with, and gobstones.
  • Who is someone you want to be like? She admires her grandmother Ruby for not letting rules or other people stop her from doing what she thinks is the right thing. At the same time, Morwenna gets frustrated at the way she thinks sometimes.

character development: prompts

What is your character most looking forward to about going to Hogwarts?

It's complicated.

Sometimes, Morwenna doesn't want to go. When she thinks of all the rules and structure and routines a boarding school must have, Morwenna groans. At home, for the most part, things are simpler without imposing too much unwanted order or authority. She knows how to coexist, to flourish, with her family, and she has her freedom. Living at Hogwarts all the time would mean living under their watch, their rules, their style of life all the time. To ask her to fit neatly into this new world, without any fusses, is almost too much to ask. And part of hera much larger part than you'd imagine, given how tight-lipped she can bedoesn't want to leave everyone behind for months on end.

Other times: the moon has risen in the sky and Morwenna, staying up far too late, is caught in her spectral lights. Other times, she dreams of the unknown. Neither of her parents has ever seen Hogwarts, and none of her father's family had gone. Hogwarts is an unknown that calls to her, a siren on the tempest's edge with the sweetest voice, and Morwenna wants to find it. She wants to see the place for herself, walk its halls, learn its secrets, and uncover yet another unfamiliar part of this vast, wild world for herself.

It also helps that Hogwarts is the first step in many to learning so many common and uncommon things about magic. She loves her family, loves St. Buryan, but historically many of the witches and wizards in the settlement there had not received a magical education like what Hogwarts has to offer. To Morwenna, their way of schooling would not bring her even close to where she wants to be. In their magic, there is no discovery. There is only practicality.

Which Hogwarts rule(s) might your character break, and why?

Describe the first time your character met or heard about someone with a special power or race on the CCE list.

Describe your character's family.

Which elective classes do you think your character might be interested in taking and why?
