Seminar: Spectacular Snitches

A second schoolyear without a quidditch cup had strengthened rather than diminished Eli's interest in playing the sport. It delayed the inevitable reality of practicing or playing in heat and mugginess and glaring sunlight. It left him free to fantasize about a team of blue-robed players emerging triumphant from a long and stormy match (he had his own favorite fantasy adverse conditions, thank you very much) holding up a snitch and a cup. This was the first time he had the chance to go after a live snitch, and he was excited.

So, when the next snitch was released, Eli took note of the familiar faces and copied (or perhaps 'followed') them as best he could in their pursuit of the snitch.

not seeking because I know the snitch minute ❤️

Morty was still sizing up the pack when Lainee uttered the magic R-word. A recruit?! Intrigued, Morty sat forward and fixed her gaze on Sabine Frost. Any young Ravenclaw out here hauling after snitches when they didn’t have to be was definitely worth sounding out for varsity quid. Morty nodded vehemently at Lainee and barked back: “On it!”

Then there was a twitch of motion in the air, and everyone seemed to give chase all at once. Morty tucked her shoulders and spurred her broom into the race.

Coming through!” she taunted as she briefly overtook Nico. Morty knew better than to look back over her shoulder or indulge in any other goofing off, not when the snitch was in her sights. She had her eye on the prize.

Nico was flying in lazy circles, just enjoying the feeling of being airborne again.  He’d gotten to spend far too little time in the air with NEWT preparations and a lack of quidditch cup to bolster his practice time.  But he knew he was there for a purpose and so he kept his eye out for the elusive snitch.  While he didn’t spend as much time seeking, he knew how to read the body language of experienced seekers.  He’d needed to learn the skill to improve his ability to send bludgers their way at the opportune moment.  Once he saw other fliers start to change, particularly Morty, he sharpened his focus and caught a glint of orange.  Go time.

Morty was right on top of that snitch—she could practically feel her fingertips graze it. And then it put on an unexpected extra burst of speed and evaded her. She’d already committed to the failed grabbing motion, and couldn’t recover in time to try again. With a soft and wordless noise of frustration, Morty watched as her teammate made the catch. In a real quidditch match, that would have been cause for celebration. In today’s case, some friendly taunts were in order.

I chased it towards you, Knight!” Morty exclaimed, zipping into formation with @Nicodemus Knight. “You’re welcome!”

Morty kept an eye on Lainee, in case she moved to release another snitch. In the meantime, there were small eagles to encourage. “Keep it up!” Morty shouted, flashing a thumbs-up to @Sabine Frost and @Eli Benoit. She might not be wearing a C on her robes anymore, but she didn’t have to be. That had been hard-fought learning.

Sabine Frost

Sabine was really enjoying herself now and - as she glanced around - she noticed just how many fellow 'Claws there were around. Two were older and she was aware of them from the Common Room. The other was a boy that she suspected was in the year above her, but he could have been a third-former. At this age, even a year's difference can seem a significant chasm in development - including height.

But thoughts of a would-be Ravenclaw team were banished from her mind, as yet another snitch was released. Despite the fact they'd been at this for quite some while, Sabine could have continued all night, such was the enjoyment she was getting from the practice. And it was not all about being a seeker for her, she was improving her flying skills to boot.

So, she paused - higher than she usually flew, and scanned the horizon for any sign of a tiny orange ball with wings.

Sabine seeks!
