Seminar: Spectacular Snitches

Recommended Posts

Lainee Brom

This year’s seminar was different in several ways. One, the seminars were back on the Quidditch pitch. Two, Lainee wasn't subjecting students to prototype brooms. Three, she wasn't doing anything remotely dangerous (relative to normal quidditch, at least.) On the other hand, there was at least one way that it was the same. Lainee was still not particularly qualified to be giving such a seminar.

"Good afternoon, hi everyone, hello again to some of you." Lainee greeted the assembled students in as authoritative a voice as she could muster. She scanned the crowd and gave a few quick smiles to familiar faces from last year's seminar or the Ravenclaw team of two years prior.

"This week's seminar is going to be about seeking." Re: her qualifications, Lainee hadn't played seeker since little league with the Tutshill Tridents. “Seeking is kind of distinct from the other positions—I'm sure you know the rules surrounding catching the snitchand the gameplay and strategy itself is different. You're mainly trying to stay out of trouble and keep yourself safe while searching for the snitch. Don't worry, there aren't any bludgers out today." Without beaters, that would be asking for trouble, and Lainee had learned her lesson after the previous year. Or had she? "The snitches spend most of the game hiding, yes, and you need a sharp eye to spot them, but they’re also elusive fliers even after you find them and start pursuing them. Today, we’ll be focusing on the last few moments as you close in on the snitch. So… expect the unexpected.”

Lainee opened a box containing six restrained practice snitches in different colors and held it up to show everyone. Each hummed subtly with magic beyond what a normal snitch required.

"We're going to ignore the bulk of the game today, and I'll be releasing these practice snitches one by one. I'll give you a few minutes to warm up on school brooms or your own brooms, and then set the first one free."

The school brooms were laid out nicely, the day was cloudy and glare-free, and not a breeze stirred the air inside the stadium. It was an excellent day for seeking.

HOW TO PLAY

Hi again

Your brooms are normal this time, but the snitches are not! This year’s seminar is Seeking practice, and Lainee has enchanted some of the practice snitches to make them harder to catch. At the beginning of each snitch window, Lainee will release one snitch, and you can RP trying to catch it. At the end of the snitch window, the snitch’s effect is revealed (e.g. the red snitch explodes in your face, possibly why you didn't catch it) and the closest seeker may RP catching it. Reaction and ambiance RPs from anyone at any point are encouraged.

This is an official VH38 Quidditch seminar. Posts of 100 words or more in this seminar will earn you QP (method/points TBD), and participants who post within the first week of the seminar will earn an in-game bonus during a larger Quidditch event in term 2.

Option 1: I don’t like math

You may post one seeking tally “[NAME] seeks!” any time during the snitch window, and any other RP at any point (including during the snitch windows).

Stop reading the rules and go RP.

Option 2: I like math

There will be 6 “snitch windows” throughout the course of the seminar, and just like in Old!Quidditch the snitch is hiding somewhere in that window. In this version, there is a snitch HOUR somewhere in a week-long (midnight CST to midnight CST) window. (Just like in Old!Quidditch, the first post in that hour claims that hour, and further seeks during that hour are bumped to subsequent hours.) At the end of each window, I will post with the seeks and the closest seeker.

The Seeks:

Tuesday, 2 am CST - Salazar Slytherin
Tuesday, 5 pm CST - Helena Ravenclaw
Tuesday, 7 pm CST - Rowena Ravenclaw

Closest seeker: Helena Ravenclaw, you may RP catching the red snitch.

And you can narrow down the possible snitch hours accordingly.

You may post one seeking tally “[NAME] seeks!” any time within the snitch window, and any other RPs at any point.

Why did it always have to be quidditch that had to be canceled? Why couldn’t it be lessons? Lessons didn’t encourage teamwork or tackling near death experiences… okay lessons had that too, but they weren’t nearly as fun as quidditch. But all that went by the wayside, because SEEKING! Ever since her first year on the quidditch team, she had been petitioning Mercutio to let her be a seeker since he didn’t trust her with a beater’s bat. Even now that she was captain the man was still trying to keep her seeker dreams down. #RUDE. “Snitchy, Snitchy, Snitchy! Did you miss me?”

Choosing to believe the crickets she heard in response to her question were the flitters of the snitches wings, Cordelia but her rear into gear. “Come to me my sparkly child!”

First Year

Sabine was disappointed there did not appear to be a chance to play quidditch competitively this year, but saw it as a blessing. The school brooms were a handicap – and given she was a first-year, this put her at a significant disadvantage. Secondly, first years were often discouraged at best and excluded at worst from the teams. And…aged 11, developmentally she was a far way away from third and fourth-year students.

But she could learn, and not just from books. So, she assembled at the second seminar of the year, to hear what she could glean from the experts. And she was glad it was seeking. Her build – fast, agile and a small target – was best suited to being either a Chaser or a Seeker. But, given the latter role was the most competitive, she was under no illusions she would be competent in the role for quite some time.

She took a look at the snitches as they were released. She’d never seen one so close before and was fascinated by them. So mesmerised was she that she realised others had kicked off and were warming up already. So, she followed suit and kept herself busy, awaiting further instruction.

This was not something that he had thought about for Quidditch this year, he was hoping that there would have been some house teams this year, but nope nothing. It was so annoying but he was still out here and Desmond didn’t know what they were going to be learning about this year, and as he stood there she was saying something about seeking. Seeking wasn’t something that Desmond got from his grandfather, he felt like he was best as a beater, but with no house teams.

At least the brooms would be normal, and Desmond now had to go after it. This was not fun at all. But at least it was something.

As your hand brushes up against the Silver snitch, every inch of your body tickles as though you’ve been hit with a tickling jinx. The phenomenon will stop if you actually catch it, but until then… hahahahah!

Sabine was going to have to use her size to her advantage. She was out-skilled, out-broomed and out-sized. All she had in her favour was the fact that she was amongst the smallest present. Which made her harder to hit – at least in her opinion. Not that the Seeker typically had to deal with Bludgers, but it had been known and she took a very small crumb of comfort from this knowledge.

As she mused, she caught sight of the silver Snitch – and it had appeared right where the Hufflepuff fifth-year was. Or did he spot it and head to that area? Regardless, it was his to catch.

Even though they were having fun seminars for the second year in a row, Zara still wanted her most beloved quidditch cup back. Long gone were those thoughts of bringing the cup back to Slytherin and tasting victory again like she had during her first year at on the Slytherin Quidditch team, The seminars seemed to be taught mostly by the same people as the previous year. Zara wasn't the least bit surprised that this one was being taught by the girl who was experimenting with brooms

For this seminar, the brooms were normal and they were going to be seeking. Since Zara loved being a seeker, she mounted her broom and waited to seek the snitch, After a few minutes. Zara thought she saw something shiny and went towards it.

Sabine was never one to give up - sure, the silver snitch was gone, but there were others to seek and so she kept moving, kept her eyes open and did her best not to be too worried that her size, speed of broom and lack of experience would be a significant disadvantage.

The next snitch was purple it seems and Sabine hoped the colour would provide enough of a contrast against the sky to be spotted if and when it appeared.

Maybe @Desmond Potter didn't think he was going to be a great seeker one day but clearly he had some natural talent for it.  Seeley wasn't out there thinking she was going to join in the game, she was just out there to watch and be the supportive one for a change.  He was always there when it was tournament time for her so she figured she was about due.

BUT, she would get a better view up on a broom, so she was on one and got a great view when he managed to actually wrap his fingers around one of the flying snitches.  Was he... laughing about it?!

"WOOHOO!  GOOD JOB DES!" She shouted and just barely noticed another one of them flit by her face and take off.

As Sabine had hoped, the dark hue of the snitch was in stark contrast to the fluffy white clouds that scuttled cross the sky. Of course, spotting it alone was irrelevant, if you couldn't reach it - as Sabine had found out to her cost with the silver snitch.

This time, however, she noticed the small winged ball when it was arguably closest to her. She'd read up on the various strategies to employ at this point. Some seekers pretended they hadn't seen it and closed in on it surreptitiously, in the hope their rival didn't notice it had been spotted.

Others make an instant play for it, not risking their opposing half catching sight of it whilst they tried to feign ignorance. And yet others tried to throw their counterpart off the scent by speeding off in one direction, only to double back once the dummy had (as the sporting analogy has it) been sold.

Sabine contemplated all of these but instead of the careful laid out plan her mind was hatching, her mouth decided to take control by opening and blurting out, "There it is." Her hand decided to become an accomplice in undermining her, by extending a single finger and pointing at the snitch's location.

Aware she'd lost any element of surprise, she simple sped towards the snitch, and as her outstretched hand got within six inches of the object of her desire, it ejected some kind of thick purple gas - but one with the apparent density of a liquid - and as Sabine closed her fingers, she came away with nothing but air.

Swiping at the dark cloud, Sabine could not feel the snitch anywhere and, as the purple inkiness dissipated, she noted her target had quite simply vanished. "Pants," she said. "Double pants," she added. Sabine had a tendency to wear her heart on her sleeve.

Desmond was never that great at seeking when he played on the house team, but there was something happening here when he was getting closer and closer to the silver one he was starting to feel a burst of tickles that were coming towards him. That wasn’t something he liked at all. HE was laughing but he needed to get the snitch. Getting closer and closer. He caught it, and he was back to normal.

“What was wrong with that one.” But now he had a silver snitch, and placed it in his pocket. Hoping that lady wouldn’t miss it but now he was heading after another one “Thanks Seeley.” He smiled and he went to the next one.

Eleanor stepped onto the Pitch, for the first time outside of Madam Wilde-Hextor's flying lessons. She had unexpectedly flown a real broom for the true first time on her very first night at the castle, but the young Slytherin felt that hardly counted, seeing as she had mostly improvised. Still, she had experienced that remarkable freedom of flight, outside of toy broomsticks and games, and now sought out to repeat that experience, again and again and again.

Nothing compared to it, and the usually prim girl found herself yearning for the freedom of the Pitch, where worries of lessons, friendships, and the Chamber could float away, left on the solid ground. She did feel mildly intimidated by the older students among the crowd, but brushed those off as distractions. If she was to impress, she would need to focus on herself.

Ellie listened intently as the stranger explained the rules of the game, clutching her school-assigned broomstick. She boarded as soon as the whistle blew, and set off in search of the elusive Golden Snitch.

Unfortunately for her a younger student flew past her and towards the shiny golden ball. The girl managed to nearly catch the snitch. Zara was starting to think that she was getting too old to chase the snitch. She was still a little bit on the short side but was at least taller than her own mother. Besides, what was the point in doing this since she would never be playing for a team again? Not unless they did those games where all the houses would be mixed up. While it was fun to get to kn ow others, she preferred playing with her own housemates.

Long gone were those glorious days in her short quidditch career. This was replaced by her seeking yet another snitch and hoping to get past the younger kids this time around.

To her surprise, Zara managed to get closer to the snitch than the younger students. For a few moments, the snitch was in her grasp. It fluttered impatiently in her hands wanting to be let good. All of a sudden, a gust of wind hit her on the side. Her hands opened up just enough for the snitch to get away from her. Zara was disappointed that the snitch had decided to get away from her.

Now that it was on the loose again, the Slytherin knew that her job was to find it and reclaim the shiny golden boy. Seeing that there was nobody else around, she glanced towards her right and saw something shiny fluttering by a tree. She went after the glimmer hope before anyone else could.

Sabine had taken a back seat when the previous snitch was released. She believed passionately in fair play and catching it twice in a row didn’t seem right. Not that she actually caught hers – but the philosophy was sound, even if a little inaccurate.

So, she re-entered the fray moving from a position away from the pitch and almost at once spotting the snitch. Although she wasn’t the only one and felt a slightly awkward feeling of relief when the older girl just managed to miss it.  Was that unsportsmanlike? Probably. But it did give her the chance to grab it. One she was about to take.

“I’m coming, I’m coming, I’m coming!”

Morty spurred her Firebolt into its characteristic burst of speed, effectively appearing on the scene out of nowhere in ten seconds flat. She hadn’t even had time to tie her curls back as she dashed to the pitch, several minutes late. It wasn’t like the Ravenclaw to show up late for Quidditch practices, but she and Shiver had very important things to do, okay?

“HiLaineeIloveyou!” Morty chirped, cresting out of her climb so abruptly that she lifted from her seat for a half-second.

It was plain to see that seeking was still ongoing, from the way that the players were slowly condensing into a neck-and-neck clump. Morty observed for a few seconds, trying to gauge whether it would be more advantageous to engage the pack in a race, or head off seeking in her own direction.

Lainee shouted useless commentary from the ground as the students took off after the first few snitches. She was basically a spectator for all the good that her "WAIT FOR IT!" and "LEFT LEFT LEFT!" and "YEAH!"s were actually doing in helping the seekers. She didn't want to give away the effects, even though that would have actually been useful. Luckily, nothing bad had happened, and nothing had required her to step in. She was two for two there, in three snitches.

The first snitch went to Desmond, the second to a first year girl in Ravenclaw robes, and the third to Zara, though Seely, Cordelia, and a Slytherin first year were also quick into the mix. The older quidditch players she wasn't surprised to see meeting success. The youngest...

"Oy. Morty. Recruit that one." Lainee said, pointing the newly arrived Ravequidder at @Sabine Frost. "Or just beat her out so she recruits herself." Lainee had nothing to go on other than the flying that she saw from the first year, but there was a chance that getting beat by a friendly would-be teammate would prompt her to ask questions. Lainee hadn't been that kind of student. Lainee had been distinctly lazy in that regard. But everyone was different.

All of the snitches were under control, so Lainee raised her voice again then to address all of the fliers.

"ORANGE SNITCH. READY SET GO."

The next of the enchanted snitches was set free.

Hi all. Zara's and Sabine's seeks from the 7th and 8th are not valid, since they were not during a snitch window. The RPs are fine and should stay ❤️

Eleanor watched in dismay as Zara Anguariz, an older Slytherin Prefect, nabbed the snitch before she could. Of course she should have expected an older student to catch the Snitch before her, and it helped that the student was a fellow Slytherin, but Ellie could not help but feel that hunger for results deep within, the hunger that led her here in the first place.

She listened closely as the witch running the seminar released another Snitch, before speeding carefully down the side of the Pitch. She would be methodical about it this time, absent any idea of Quidditch tactics and strategy. Considering the House teams had not been selected as of yet, and the first years' flying lessons had been useful in terms of Quidditch, Eleanor felt like she needed to impress as many people as possible to improve her chances.

She peered around, swiveling her head like an owl bent on one goal.

Nico was glad to see Lainee back for another one of these quidditch seminar things.  He hadn’t really gotten as much chance to play with Lainee as a teammate as he’d have liked, she was a cool person and a late addition to the Ravenclaw quidditch squad.

He was bummed by being late to her seminar, but quickly took to a broom and the skies.  “Hey Lainee!  How’s it going?  Have any of your designs gotten approved yet?”  He was pretty sure that they’d all be riding brooms designed by the Ravenclaw before too long.

“Now then, where’s it hiding?”  Nico had only played seeker once or twice, he was much more comfortable with a beater’s bat in hand.

Sabine was loving this. Yes, she still saw her chances of becoming the ‘Claw seeker as slim to none, but it was a position she’d love to attain at some point on her career. And she’d gladly start as a Chaser until that point.

Of course, the whole ‘first-year brooms’ thing was a ‘thing’ right now, but she’d been doing her research diligently, and for the price of a decent new broom, she could pick up a professional quality broom second-hand. The pro-teams seemed to upgrade annually, and through a connection made in her flying class, she was sure she could be in a position to buy one of the Kestrel’s cast-offs (if you could call a Varápidos an inferior model). She was sure she could look after it to such an extent that it would seem brand new.

But that was an unnecessary distraction right now. She was aware that a new snitch had just been released and saw the orange ball of energy hover for a split second, and then it was off.

Unfortunately for her this was not going to be her snitch. Zara was getting tired from doing this due to staying up late patrolling the corridors. It had been a busy night catching the young kids that were up to no good. Why couldn't the professors get all the late night patrols? The Slytherin Prefect needed her beauty rest. her mind went back to the task at hand. Another snitch was in the mist and waiting to be caught. Zara noticed t hat her peers had taken off and were going towards the glimmer of hope. Telling her broom to go fast, Zara attempted to catch up to them.
