I'd die to find out

A lot of thought had gone into this.

The best time would have been right after breakfast, when Halcyon was happy from seeing his sister and slightly more normal than usual.  But there were classes right after breakfast, and Ariel knew better than to try and waylay him then.  So their first free period would have to do.

The best place was the Entrance Hall.  It was the hub of Hogwarts traffic.  You had to go through there to get almost everywhere in the castle, and Ariel hoped to use that to his advantage.

Now, he just had to wait for Halcyon to pass through.  Or, to try to.  That was the part of the plan that had Ariel most nervous.  What if Hals didn't come this way?  He would have to go find him.  And that wouldn't look suspicious at all.

Free periods were a wonderful invention, and Halcyon did not understand why none of his peers used them in the proper fashion. They were for studying, so that one did not have to study later, and could take one's time with dinner, or go to bed early, or read ahead, or, he conceded, whatever it was that people with social lives did in their spare time.

He had already composed an excellent beginning to the Transfiguration essay he was going to hopefully write today by the time he reached the entrance hall on his way down to the Slytherin common room.

As he passed by the main staircase, he caught Ariel's eye. Awkward! Awkward! Disengage! Hals quirked the corner of his mouth in what he hoped would pass for 'acknowledging smile' and nodded. And if he also sped up slightly, well, maybe he was just... in a hurry?

For just one moment, when Halcyon caught his eye, Ariel thought maybe he was getting a break.  But then the other boy's gaze slid away from his and his pace quickened.  He didn't know why it surprised him.

Ariel sprang into action, literally.  He half walked, half skipped, to catch up.

"Hals!" he called, "Wait up!"

That would force the other boy to stop.  Or else look impolite for no good reason.  Halcyon was harder to read than most other people in their year, but Ariel had got the impression that he was only rude to people if he thought it was somehow deserved.

Noooooooooo.

He'd been caught. Hals' feet stopped while the rest of him was busy cringing away. He could actually feel himself forgetting his excellent essay opener as he flicked through the five stages of grief, coming to terms with the fact that he was about to have a conversation. With a peer. He turned around. "Ariel," he said. "Hi," he said.

"Did you want something?"

Please say no.
