A chance to bond

Tabitha Callow

Tabitha had come to the library to do her homework without getting distracted, but it turned out that she could still procrastinate in a silent room stacked with books. Instead of writing the essay, she was using her quill to draw a simple sketch of a horse which was quickly evolving into a fierce looking centaur. That was the funny thing about sketching, all you had to do was put your quill to parchment and draw whatever felt natural in that moment. And for some reason, she was thinking about centaurs in this moment.

Before Hogwarts, Tabitha's mind would've settled for a familiar horse, but she was no longer the same muggle girl who thought putting the word 'mythical' before the word 'creature' meant that it didn't exist. She had been exposed to a whole new world of magic with all kinds of spells, creatures, people, and potions. Hogwarts taught her something new about magic every single day and it got her creative juices flowing through her fingertips and onto paper. Tabitha had heard a rumour that centaurs really did live in the Forbidden Forest but she had never ventured that far, she was drawing from the memory of pictures she had seen before.

She glanced up from her sketch when she heard footsteps coming towards her. She recognised the person to be Cosette, a girl in her year but a different house. "Hey" She whispered, trying not to make too much noise in the Library. "Would you like to join me? I was doing homework but now I'm sketching instead."

Avery was trying to get her to go to the dueling chamber, and she told her Hufflepuff friend that she would make it to the dueling chamber that evening and needed to look up some information for their Defense class. Which was the truth, but it was not the whole truth, she didn’t want to go the the dueling chamber right away, after losing so may times she felt like she needed to do some research on something and then he might show up.

She made her way into the library, because it was the besting for her. If she didn’t then she would have found somewhere else. But the library wasn’t the worst place, and it was quiet, that was something that she needed. Just quiet and not to be bothered while she was looking up someone for her classes and try to get better at her wand work.

Not paying attention to where she was walking, she as trying to find a table that had no one at it, but it was hard. It seems like many fifth years were in here studying for their OWLs, and seventh years were studying for their NEWTs. Exams that Cosette didn’t want to worry about, she was only eleven years old and those were a long time away.

As she was passing a table, she heard someone say hi, at first she didn’t know if it was for her, but she looks up from her feet and noticed that she was talking to her. Asking if she wanted to join her. The girl, Tabitha, was someone that she has seen in class, but didn’t talk to a lot. “Sure.” She whispered back, even though that was her normal voice anyway. “What are… are you… you sketching?”

Was there someone else in her year that liked to draw? That would be nice to bond with someone over that.

Tabitha was glad to have some company and shifted the heavy, leather bound textbook out of the way of her classmate. She was supposed to be using that textbook for her homework, but she hadn't read it in ages so it could be disguarded for the time being. "Great." She was still whispering but her noise level was gradually rising without her taking notice. "Well it started out as a horse, but now I'm drawing what I think a centaur looks like." She explained, turning the drawing so Cosette could have a better look at it. "It's not my best, some of the lines are a little wonky, but other than that I think it's okay. What do you think? Have you ever seen a centaur to compare?"

Tabitha realised she was rambling. She went quiet to let Cosette organise herself at the table and look at the drawing. Tabitha waited with a nervous smile to see what she thought. Mostly she was eager to learn if she had ever seen a centaur because it's be totally cool if she had.

"Are you any good at drawing?" The Gryffindor asked, genuinely interested to know more about Cosette. They shared classes together but they had never really spoken much before.

While she was taking her seat, she looked at the girl. Cosette was someone that wanted to make friends, but was worried that she wouldn’t be able to talk to them, it seems like most of the people that she talked to. They liked to talk a lot and Cosette she wasn’t like that at all. She was quiet and just didn’t know what she was supposed to even be doing at all. But it was nice that people wanted to talk to her, and she wasn’t just an outcast like she thought that she was.

“A centaur? Not…not at all.” Knowing that dragons and unicorns and everything that she thought was fake was real, it was still so much to be able to take in. Avery was telling her a lot about it, the creatures and the magical flying car that lives in the forest. There was just a lot to take in.

Looking at the drawing. “That is… that is good, very good.” They were young and their drawing skills were not the best, even Cosette knew that she needed to get better at drawing in the one run.

“I do… I draw… I mean.” Knowing that they were classmates, but this is the first time they have sat down and talked with one another. Which was something she liked, but she was also very scared to just start talking to people. She wished that she was able to just ramble like Tabitha was able to do.

Tabitha smiled at Cosette telling her that she thought the picture was good. "Thank you." She replied, "I'm not sure how accurate it is as I've never seen a centaur either, but I have seen a picture so that's what I'm going on." By now Tabitha had forgotten that she was supposed to be whispering and was shushed by an older student sitting at a nearby desk.

"Sorry." Tabitha whispered back then ducked into her rucksack to locate something. She found a blank piece of parchment and a pencil which she offered to Cosette. "Would you like to draw with me? Oh! But only if you have time though." Most people came to the library to study and it suddenly it dawned on Tabitha that she might be distracting poor Cosette away from her studies. "I'm supposed to be doing homework myself."

It wasn’t like she knew what one of those looked like, so what Tabitha was drawing was closer to than what Cosette could think it was. Since she said she looked in books and was able to see though that, that might be the smartest thing. “Do you think… think that there are some here?” She asked as she went along with the comment of nothing seeing one and only seeing them in books. Cosette was wondering if they were here, since there was so many different creatures here that they were to learn about. Cosette was shocked that she has not seen a unicorn.

Not knowing that they were uncommon in the Wizarding world.

“Thanks.”She smiled as she took the parchemnt and pencil. It was nice seeing someone else carrying something that was not a quill. While she was trying to get used to writing with those, it was hard and a lot of work. Cosette would rather have her muggle items to draw and write with.

“I just… just came here for the quiet.” She had to get out of the common room, there was something going on in there and people were being loud and Cosette just wanted to rest and read a little. “I don’t understand… understand some of the homework… so drawing is better.” At least with drawing she could forget about her homework for a while.
