we got no troubles, life is da bubbles

Reid J. Fauchelevent

Maybe it was a bit brisk for a swim in the lake, the water just shy of being pleasant (in fact, it sent icy tingles all up Reid’s leg when he dipped his toe in), but maybe if they moved it would be fine.

Doing laps on the surface to stay warm, however, was very different from diving into the Lake’s depths, where the temperature was likely to drop, and that’s just what he and his other Mentee – Francis – were going to do. Movement alone wouldn’t cut it.

“Tha’,” Reid explained as he tapped Francis with the Warming Charm, “is fer stayin’ warm while we’re down there.” Then he did the same to himself and felt the chill fade from his skin, despite standing on the shore in his swim trunks and nothing else but a pair of goggles he’d taken from Professor Featherstone’s class. He held out the second pair to his ickle fellow Gryffindor.

Francis had wanted to see the mermaids; Reid did not – in fact, he disliked getting into the Lake because of all the weird and incredibly dangerous water-dwelling creatures that called it home… but he’d put on a nonchalant face, because there was no way in heck he was letting Francis get into the water on his own lol

“An’ this,” Reid continued, raising his wand once more, “is so we can breathe while we’re down there. Voila.” Boom – Francis sported a bubble around his head. Reid grinned at him. “Ye ready to meet the fishes?” In a good way.

Francis Barnes II

Francis wanted to believe that the mind was mightier than the body; that a strong, unshakable will could shut down any barrier that stood between reason and the thrilling allure of unquestionably bad life choices.

Case in point: Reid had offered to take him deep sea diving in the Black Lake. The risks were numerous. Not only was the water cold as death, but neither of them were professional divers who had any business exploring the unknown depths of any lake. Did Francis acknowledge these two facts as he waded barefoot and ankle deep into the murky, lapping waves of the Black Lake?

No. No he did not.

“This is fine!” he said, bringing chattering articulation to his thoughts as his body shook with tremors from the cold. Decked out in swim trunks and an oversized t-shirt, he was poorly outfitted for their underwater adventure. But that was quitter talk, and Francis was no quitter!

Fortunately, Reid was more sensible, if only by a slight margin. His magic took the chill out of the wind and waters, leaving Francis with a far more comfortable warmth. It was amazing how a simple spell could make an impossible situation possible.

Francis experimentally pressed against the outer barrier of the bubblehead charm gently with his finger tips. Sound was muffled and his view of the outside world seemed inexact. Ultimately, Francis felt very much like he’d had a terrible accident with a too large piece of bubblegum, but he was stoked to dive beneath the waves all the same.

“I am so ready!” he replied, feeling every muscle in his body tense with enthusiasm. He was only waiting for Reid to lead the way; a thread of common sense that was growing thinner with each passing second.
