In the time that Vladimir had spent away from Hogwarts, he had thought from time to time on how the thestral herd was doing. When he did think of the herd, he did wonder the most about Luka, the young one just barely able to go airborne before Vladimir had gone home for the summer holidays.

Now, it was time to see how the thestrals had progressed since his departure. Luka had not disappointed Vladimir, who had wondered to himself if the creatures would recall who he even was. No, the thestral had caught sight of Vladimir and galloped fairly quickly towards him, almost knocking the Ravenclaw over in his excitement - at least, that was what Vladimir assumed Luka was attempting to express.

This would be something he would need to monitor over the year.

“Goodness Luka, I do not understand your personality in conjunction with the others,” Vladimir had mused to himself quietly, sitting in the glade underneath the shade of one of the trees. His eyes were focused upon the herd, watching the youngest of the herd as they trotted alongside their mothers.

True, a couple of the youngest ones certainly showed quite the amount of energy, but nothing to the extent of Luka. His sire and dame were neither a thestral to show that much enthusiasm in their actions.

Vladimir knew he would need to research further into the study of thestral personalities. But for now, Luka had trotted over to the boy and nudged at his shoulder with his muzzle. Vladimir stood from his place and procured a piece of raw meat for the creature before following it out to walk amongst the rest of the herd.

Despite Vladimir’s search through the library, he had not found nearly as much information about the personality traits passed down amongst lineages as he would have liked. However, the boy was satisfied with what he had learned. If anything, Luka would either continue with his rambunctious behaviour into adulthood, or the thestral would calm some.

For the moment, Vladimir was not sure which he would prefer. Though he enjoyed walking amongst the entirety of the herd and relishing in their general calm, Luka’s exuberance was always a welcome sight.

The youngest additions, Calypso and Obsidian were also fascinating Vladimir, as it seemed as though they were attempting to emulate Luka’s behaviour.

Vladimir made sure to jot down his findings in his journal before he needed to return to the castle.

With no other humans around, Vladimir wore a frown upon his features, his brow knitted together in worry, as he tended to young Obsidian’s wounded wing. How the young thestral had injured itself, Vladimir did not know. What he did know was that the leathery wing was torn and the equine let out a small and almost pitiful sound in his discomfort.

“There, there,” Vladimir soothed the creature quietly, “I will heal it, do not worry. Esti bine.” Vladimir did his best not to hurt the creature anymore than he was already hurting with the tear, not large by any set standards, but regardless. Any injury to this herd that Vladimir had grown so fond of was a source of agony for the boy.

If only their wings were not so fragile, but he could not change their innate biology.

“Careful now, if you keep moving, I cannot get this to right itself Obsidian,” he attempted to converse with the thestral. He received what he interpreted as a disgruntled noise; Vladimir let out a soft sigh even as he nearly completed his repair of the wing.

Parting was such sweet sorrow, Vladimir mused to himself as he spent his last moments with the herd before he would need to return to the castle. It was always amazing to the boy how the herd would adapt to the new additions, both thestral and human, in Vladimir’s case. If the herd could sense that something in him was amiss, Vladimir could not be certain, but Calypso, Obsidian, and especially Luka would not leave him be.

If he went to check upon the wings of the adults, they trotted behind him. If he paused to take some notes, Luka would stretch out his wings and flap them, stirring up the wind and causing Vladimir to have to stop.

“You are doing this on purpose,” Vladimir stated to himself, the milky white eyes of the thestral never changing as he stared at them.

Still, a small half-smile cracked onto his face, the boy’s hand reaching out to stroke the thestral’s muzzle gently, before he continued to evaluate the health of the rest of the members and report back to Qin.
