THE COMMITTEE FOR CHARACTER EXCELLENCE (CCE)
Plots          Canon & Plot Relatives          Races & Conditions          Special Abilities            FAQ         Forms

The Committee for Character Excellence (CCE) is responsible for approving extra special character traits or abilities. If you've ever thought you'd like a character who had a special power, wasn't quite 100% human, or to be related to a canon character, you're in the right place.

Before you turn to a CCE element to make your character stand out, please try to explore all aspects of development for your character. You can set yourself apart from other students without anything extra. After all, your character is already performing magic and interacting with the most wondrous setting imaginable!

Not every CCE application is successful. The powers and races listed below are rare in the world of the books, so they are rare on VH, too. A lot of consideration and deliberation is given to each application and rejection of your application is never personal.

CCE applications come with a ban on sorting for the next few VH years. This is to make sure your CCE character gets enough attention and time to grow. Please pay attention to the restrictions listed on the CCE trait you wish to apply for. If you breach the sorting restrictions you may be blacklisted from future CCE applications.

Site-Wide Plots

FAQ

As in the Harry Potter books, there is an element of dark magic and danger on Virtual Hogwarts, opposed by heroic figures who protect both Hogwarts and the wider wizarding world. Although these groups operate mostly outside the walls of the Hogwarts castle, occasionally there are opportunities for the dark side of the VH universe to move out of the background and into the school, allowing students to directly take part in dramatic and dangerous plot moments.

In the VH timeline, the Death Eaters are currently disbanded thanks in large part to the efforts of the Auror Department. With the Death Eater threat no longer at the forefront of the community's mind, other challenges to the wizarding world's way of life are now free to emerge from the shadows...

Plot characters which are currently active are listed below. The current tag for site plot threads is "the uprising".

For a complete look at VH's plot history, please refer the the Virtual Hogwarts: A History thread. For a complete listing of past and present plot staff please see the Plot & Canon Character Archive.

CURRENT KEY PLOT FIGURES

Ministry Staff
Hermione Granger -- The current Minister of Magic.

Aurors
Harry Potter -- Current leader of the Auror Department.

More to be announced

Other
Michael & Insley Jacobin -- Vocal lobbyists who believe the Ministry is increasingly pandering to part-humans at the expense of human witches and wizards.

Forbidden Forest Wolves -- A group of werewolves reportedly seen close to the Hogwarts school grounds during the 2038-2039 school year, but not sighted since.

Organisations
B.L.O.O.D. -- A newly minted nonprofit group founded by Amortentia Bloodfang to draw awareness to the part-vampire community.

Growing Fruitful Futures (GFF) -- A conservative nonprofit which openly supports the improvement of educational standards through the exclusion of students from muggle or mixed backgrounds.

Parents For Progress (PFP) -- Founded by Mallory Selwyn, this organisation describes itself as an education reform nonprofit, but hides a more specific agenda for increasing part-human inclusion in the magical community.

The Petrescu Rehabilitation Centre -- A private facility designed to 'rehabilitate' part-vampires to blend in with human society. Owned by Vasile Petrescu.

Wizards First Trust (WizFirst) -- A new banking company competing with Gringott's. Exclusively employs human staff.

 Canon & Plot Relatives
FAQ         Application Forms

On VH, members who wish to be related to a character from the HP universe must apply to the moderators, with some exceptions. You can create your own original character related to a minor canon character, or join one of the many canon characters who already have family on the site.

You need to fill out an application form if:

  • You have come up with a new concept for a canon connection (i.e. you are not joining an existing VH family)
  • Your character is part of the Potter, Weasley or Malfoy families
  • Your character will inherit a special race or power

Some relatives do not require an application, only for the originally approved relative to notify Gagwilde and Vulpus of the new addition to their family. You don't need an application form if none of the above conditions apply and:

  • You want to play the child of your own alumni
  • You want to join a minor off-canon family and you have the permission of the member originally approved for the off-canon relation

If you are uncertain whether you need to fill out an application form, please PM Gagwilde and Vulpus to ask before spending time on your application.

Available characters from the Potter, Weasley and Malfoy families will be advertised when it is time for them to sort. Other canon families who wish to advertise for members to play their children can PM Gagwilde and Vulpus to have the names listed, but this is not mandatory.

Members can also apply to be related to the characters which emerge out of VH's plots. If a character mentioned in a Daily Prophet article or otherwise created specifically for plot purposes interests you, you are free to send in an application to invent a new family member for them. If the character in question has been roleplayed on the board, not just mentioned in articles, you should talk to them to gain permission to sort a relative before you begin filling out an application. You do not need to submit an application to play a plot relative if the plot character is a non-canon alumni.

It is not necessary to submit an application to play the relatives of staff such as professors. If you have permission from the person who plays the staff member, you may roleplay a relative. The staff member should PM Gagwilde or Vulpus with the name of the character and their relationship to the staff member.

If you are accepted to play a canon from one of the most prominent character families (e.g. Potter, Weasley, Malfoy) you must wait until your character is entering fourth year before sorting again. For minor canons or plot relatives you must wait two years before sorting again.

You may only apply for characters for the next available sorting. Currently we are accepting applications for VH39 including Alec Potter

Races & Conditions

FAQ         Application Forms

Applications for races are only accepted from older students (6th year - alumni) planning their next character. If you are approved for a special race you must not sort again until your CCE character is entering fourth year.

The available races are:

  • Part-giant (e.g. Hagrid)
  • Part-goblin (e.g. Professor Flitwick)
  • Part-Veela (e.g. Fleur Delacour)

A good special races application tells us what your character has inherited from their non-human side, how that ties in to the existing lore surrounding your chosen race, and how you are going to roleplay your character in a school mostly full of humans.

Applications for werewolf are accepted from students of any age, but this condition will only be granted to members who have shown some longevity on the site.

A good werewolf application tells us how your character became a werewolf, how they feel about their condition and the werewolf community and, most importantly, how you intend to incorporate this into your roleplays as a student.

Parselmouth is not open for applications. This power canonically appears only in direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin.

Metamorphmagus is not open for applications due to its extreme rarity.

Special Abilities

FAQ         Application Forms

Training for a special ability is a unique character development opportunity, and applications are very competitive. To apply for a special power you must be a fifth year or above with the appropriate grades for your chosen power, or demonstrated exam points adequate for the necessary grade in the appropriate OWLs. Students who do not maintain the at least an A in the relevant classes after acceptance may be deemed ineligible to complete their power. If you are approved to study an ability you must not sort again until your CCE character graduates.

To complete the training for a special ability you will be asked to complete six threads in response to lesson prompts within a reasonable time frame. Some of the threads must be completed solo, others you will be able to do jointly if desired. All special abilities have roughly equal requirements and none are considered longer or more difficult in terms of out of character commitment.

It is possible, for character development purposes, to apply to train in a special ability but ultimately fail. Applications to fail are less competitive than applications for a complete power.

The following powers are available:

Animagus

  • An animagus can transform themselves into a single, consistent animal form at will. The animal form is typically characterised by an identifying feature, such as the spectacle marks around McGonagall's eyes in cat form.
  • Any fifth year or above may apply if they have two years of good grades in Transfiguration, and an EE in the OWL, or sufficient exam points.
  • A good animagus application demonstrates a deep IC motivation to study this power and a logical connection to the choice of animal form.

Legilimency & Occlumency

  • A legilimens is capable of sensing the thoughts of another person. The only known canon legilimens are Dumbledore, Professor Snape and Voldemort.
  • As occlumency is a purely defensive power which does not require a licence it is taught as part of the legilimens qualification, not separately.
  • Any fifth year or above may apply if they have Outstanding results in a majority of core classes and OWLs or exam points in all core classes.
  • A good legilimency application demonstrates a strong IC motivation to study this power as well as how your character uses the power in keeping with the existing lore.

Seer

  • A seer has the gift of the Seeing Inner Eye. They may be able to predict future events to some extent. On VH this ability is considered to be innate to some extent, but typically not manifesting until the teenage years, and requiring training to be honed into a useful ability.
  • Any fifth year or above may apply if they have Outstanding results in Divination for two years prior and an Outstanding or sufficient exam points on the Divination OWL. Arithmancy and Ancient Runes are also highly recommended, but not required.
  • A good seer application clearly demonstrates the extent of the power and how it manifests. Not all seers have visions or produce prophecies, and the mods are open to thoughtful and creative interpretations of this ability.

FAQ

Plots & Relatives

Who are the mods in charge of these areas? Can I PM them questions?

  • You are always welcome to PM questions not answered in this thread. For questions about plots and plot characters please PM Gagwilde. For questions about canon relatives please PM Gagwilde and Vulpus.

Can my alumni become an auror or other plot character?

  • From time to time applications will open to join plot-central careers such as auror, or to take up other positions related to site-wide plots. Members who play these characters function similarly to ambience staff and are required to participate in the planning and execution of plot events. If you would like your alumni to be an auror but applications are not open or you don't wish to become plot staff, we encourage you to find or invent other careers within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Can I ask plot characters to join my threads?

  • Plot characters have specific goals they work towards in order to create a coherent plotline. They do not typically join random threads at request.

A plot character joined my thread and I don't want them there!

  • When plot characters post within Hogwarts they often invade student threads, including those marked as closed. If a plot character has joined your thread and you would prefer they didn't disrupt your plans, simply PM them and they will remove their posts.

Can my student be killed as part of a site plot?

  • Very rarely, a plot may involve the death of a student. Once the character is killed there is no way to bring them back; their account is deactivated and they do not come back as ghosts. These deaths involve a lot of planning, and offering your character up for death does not guarantee it will happen. No plot character will ever roleplay killing your character or seeing them die without your permission.

Can I use spells created for VH plot characters on other sites?

  • No. Many of the spells used by plot characters were invented specifically for use on VH and cannot be used on other sites.

Abilities, Races & Conditions

Who are the mods in charge of these areas? Can I PM them questions?

  • You are always welcome to PM questions not answered in this thread. For questions about special abilities, races and conditions please PM Gagwilde and Vulpus.

Do I have to apply for special abilities in fifth year or can I submit my application later?

  • Fifth year is the minimum age, but you are welcome to submit in sixth or seventh year, or even as an alumni.

I have a creative idea for my ability but I am not sure it's okay. Can I PM the mods to ask before I write up my application?

  • Yes! Please PM Gagwilde and Vulpus.

Can I submit an application jointly with someone else if we have a plot planned together or want to be family?

  • No. Each character requires an individual application. While we encourage you to include details of your planned plots or family members in your application, there is no guarantee that both/all the applications will be approved, and you may find that one character is approved while another is not.

I was working on a special ability but I went inactive or didn't complete the training in a timely manner and I have been removed from the official list. Is there any way I can finish the lessons and return to the list?

  • Please PM Gagwilde and Vulpus with links to the lessons you have already completed and let us know why you weren't able to finish. Depending on how much you have already completed and any other circumstances, you may be able to continue where you left off. If this happens more than once you will not be able to complete your power and will not be added back to the official list or be permitted to roleplay having the special ability.
