Qin's Expedition: Deep Into the Mangroves

Zara Anguariz

Prompt #5

2/2 Words

The baby Snallygaster looked rather cute. Zara was smart enough to stand back and let her classmates do all of the work. There was no way she was going to risk her life dealing with a creature that she didn't know that much about. Where there was a baby, there was a more dangerous adult Snallygaster somewhere around here. For all she knew, the babies mother or father could be lurking in the shadows waiting for the right moment to eat one of the humans that was bothering her baby.

Fiona decided that it was a good idea to feed the baby. Zara took a few steps back just in cases something was to go wrong. She noticed the calm atmosphere and decided that nothing was going to go wrong.

To her relief, the baby ate the treat that was laid out before them. One of her classmates decided it was a good idea to touch the baby. All of a sudden, she heard a loud roar.

Prompt #6

To her relief, there wasn't an adult Snallygaster around. Zara knew that this had been a successful mission even though she hadn't done much work. At least she had seen a new creature and had learned a lot about it. Now it was time to head back towards the castle and report their findings. After backing away slowly, she found herself back safely among her classmates and Professor Qin.

Zara found that she didn't find as much as her classmates had. The Slytherin had mostly observed the unfamiliar creature and hadn't interacted with before. This was because when it came to dealing with magical creatures, she would rather observe them before they got familiar with her instead of risking her life.

When everyone was done reporting their findings, Zara headed back towards the castle to do her Transfiguration homework which was due the next day.

Optional: I thought that this activity was a lot of fun and was good for Zara's character development. I know I am slow at posting due to real life things and quidditch burn out. Hopefully we can pursue more activities like this in the near future. <3

Kacie Weaver

Kacie shrugged at the girl who refused to take charge.  “No worries.  I was just wondering.  Don’t really need a leader, I suppose.”

Kacie wandered over to where Shiver was looking and nodded.  “Yeah, definitely bones, but pretty small, on the whole.  Definitely couldn’t be human.  Bigger than a bird, though.”  Kacie wished there were some kind of spell you could use to identify what species a bone belonged to.  That was totally the kind of thing magic was good for.

Kacie looked at the prints that Shiver had found and frowned.  “I dunno… maybe if we see anything else concerning we can check with Addison or Professor Qin.  I think we’re probably okay though.”

PROMPT Three

Words 4/4

Swimming was fun. Especially when it came to dealing with dangerous creatures. Since Alecia was the type of person who would never pass up a dare, she stood there waiting to see what everyone else was going to do before diving into the lake. The only other person she knew well in her group was Fern. Since Fern was a smart Ravenclaw she would know what to do.

All she knew was that the lake contained Selkies. Alecia didn't know that much about the creature since she hadn't studied it before going on this adventure. There wasn't that much time to do extra studying because she had a hard enough time trying to keep up with six classes this term. Learning how to perform magic was turning out to be more difficult. Printing page after page of words on parchment consumed most of her free time instead of dueling which she would rather be doing then a boring essay.

Learning spells was fun. Perhaps she could perform a few during this adventure? Only a few harmless ones. Alecia thought she noticed a shadow. She looked towards it wondering if they were being watched.

PROMPT Four

Words 2/4

Alecia had forgotten all about the mirrors they should of been using if something bad were to happen to the group. The Gryffindor was more focused on going on this adventure and dealing and encountering a dangerous creature. Just in case something had decided to jump out at her, she had her wand out ready to defend herself.

All of a sudden, she heard a sound. One of her teammates was blowing a horn. It was really loud. So loud that Alecia found herself covering up her ears. A strange looking creature emerged from the water. It waved towards the group. Now it was time to go into the lake and explore. Alecia eagerly did this after stuffing gillyweed into her mouth.

Kacie moved through the brush, looking for further signs of the thing that might have left the bones behind.  She froze as she heard the sound of a bone snapping as she stepped down on it.  Before she could move, she heard a croaking bark and she turned to look at Shiver.  Who’d stepped in droppings, poor thing.

She had never heard of a dog-toad, but she wouldn’t be surprised if it were a thing.  Plus, since she didn’t recognize Shiver, Kacie was pretty sure that she was older than her, and therefore had probably already taken a year of Care of Magical Creatures.  She nodded at Shiver’s use of the mirror to contact Professor Qin.  Better to be safe than go out on a limb and get bitten… literally.

PROMPT Five

Words 3/5

Her group swam and swam and swan and...well you get the picture. Was the group going to find what they were looking for before this gillyweed ran out or would they die trying? Even though Alecia was a good swimmer, she found herself getting tired. This made her wonder if she should change her diet and eat less candy and more applies. At least swimming made her calm to the point where she could think about how her year was going so far and how she could possibly make out up with Ethan.

Reaching out, Alecia touched the plants that were in front of her. They felt smooth. The gillyweed was starting to wear off. For a moment, Alecia started to panic. The blond found herself getting distracted by a shiny object. It was a chest. Perhaps it contained treasures? Rushing towards the chest she reached down and took a golden spoon, a fork, and a knife.

Kacie tried to help Shiver spread some of the meat out, but got distracted by the small hodag that had poked its head out from the brush.  She calmly reached out a handful of the meat to the little guy.  He was so cute!  When he took the food from her hand, she reached out and petted him on the head gently.

“They seem to be pretty okay with being touched,” Kacie called to Shiver.  This trip was so cool!

PROMPT Six

With her trophies safely in her grasp, it was now time to head towards the surface before the gillyweed ran out. When her head had broken the surface, Alecia realized how cold the water was. All she wanted to do was to change her clothes and head towards the kitchens to get a hot meal. When she found herself back with Professor Qin, Alecia found that she had to report her findings first.

After listening to her classmates, Alecia did this before heading back to the castle for a warm shower and something to eat. While it had been a fun adventure filled with observing a new magical creature and treasures, this adventure had been tiring and she felt as though she had never worked so hard in her life for a class that wasn't even required.

Kacie shrugged as Professor Qin advised not touching them, and withdrew her hand.  Some of the adults did seem to be getting pretty aggressive with the meat that had been laid out.

Kacie looked around for some samples to bring back to base camp.  She found some claws that had been shed by the hodag and put them in her bag.  She followed Shiver back to base camp and reported back to Professor Qin.

“They’re predators, and whatever they eat is probably about the size of a medium-sized dog, based on the bones… uh, is that two or one?  Uh, they shed their claws-” Kacie held up her bag with the samples, “- and they seem to fight over meat instead of sharing as an entire pack or waiting for an alpha to eat first.”

Hopefully that’d be good enough?

OPTIONAL:  This was a lot of fun, and I’d totally do it again.  Timing with RL happened to be bad after prompt 2, but I think there was a pretty reasonable amount of time between prompts!  Thanks @Professor Qin and @Addison Toft

Prompt 5 - Reaction

Words used 5/5, Total words used 20/20

Kat made sure to not keep her gaze on the creature for any length of time after her cousin confirmed what she thought was happening and how the creature might be using it, not wanting to end up a part of the horned serpent's diet.   Yeah, not on her list of top ten experiences she wanted to live through.  Especially not after the scene of carnage she witnessed when the serpent did get his prey -- or her.  Kat did not plan on getting close enough to be more gender specific, thank you very much.

With the water now calm and no sign of the serpent, Kat was looking down as she stepped away from from the river bank back towards the group.  She spotted some 'leavings' from the creature and taking a specimen bag from her tote, Kat once again used her wand to levitate the droppings into it without having to touch them so they could examine the droppings later to extract what they did contain for research.

Prompt 6 - Report

Optional:  YES you should!

Total words used 120/20

There was not much more they could do there and with that, Kat headed back towards their starting point with the others.  Once there, she waited for Addison to give her report to Professor Qin and then handed over the samples she had collected, adding, "Also, the creature can apparently shapeshift to confuse its prey, are predatory, and rather voracious when attacking."  Considering Kat's fear, this was pretty good survival for her.

Not even back to the school yet from this trip, Kat could not resist asking, "You ARE going to do this again, aren't you, Professor Qin?" Nodding her head in the 'yes' motion the entire time she was asking.

Sophia Hunter

Sophia Hunter

Prompt 5:  React

Use words (5/5) - Total words used 20/20

Sophia simply watched the creature as she vaguely heard someone in the background communicating with the professor using their mirror.  In the meantime, she observed the baby and how it was behaving towards them.  The lizards that Professor Qin had instructed to be fed to the creature and someone was now doing so were a part of their diet and Sophia had to work at keeping her excitement contained as she watched it closely, doing her best to remember everything she was witnessing.  This was an unusual opportunity and the fourth year realized this.

Just as Sophia was about to extract her notebook from her bag, she saw @Clayton Stagg attempt to touch the baby and wondered if this was a good idea.  Upon hearing the roar, Sophia would have to say that no, it was probably not.  Mostly, they just needed to remain calm.

Prompt 6:  Report

Optional:  Yes, definitely.

Total words used 20/20

Sophia simply turned and began to head back towards the meeting area at a calm and steady pace and when she arrived at their original clearing, it was only moments before the rest of their group joined them as well.  She listened quietly while some of the group gave their reports to Professor Qin and then it was her turn.  "It seems to prefer open spaces rather than tree covered ones as evidenced by its nest being on the plain.  It does not require close proximity to water for habitat."  Taking out the two specimen bags, she handed them over to Professor Qin and finished her report with, "While it shares many traits with fowl species, its footprint has some traits similiar to reptiles creatures."

Yes, please do this again.
