Bubble, Bubble, Erkling Trouble

Please wait for Ethan to post <3

The trip had been slow as Sophia tried to bear as much of Ethan's weight as possible by supporting him on his right side so he would not have to use the leg as much as possible.  She was fairly sure it was painful for him.  Unfortunately, she was not yet able to levitate a person any kind of distance at all.  It seemed to take forever but finally, they were at the doors to the Hospital Wing and Sophia was getting him inside and to the check-in desk hoping someone would help him quickly.

She was definitely worried.

This was the second worst day of his life, the first was his second year when he was attacked by masked men, and now his bubble didn’t work and there was darts in his legs. He was pretty sure that he was able to walk, but when he tried to walk, he almost fell down. Ethan didn’t want to go to the wing, but he had a feeling that Sophia wouldn’t allow him not to do.

It had to hard for her to help him get to the wing, after making it from the lawn to the wing, he took a seat while Sophia got him all signed in. Four years, he had been working with magic for four years and he has never been to the wing. He hoped that he wouldn’t even make it to the wing, but those Erkling’s had another story.

Sitting there, he was trying to hold in the fact that he was in horrible pain.

Greta could hear the pair coming down the corridor before she saw them, but could not differentiate the odd shuffling sound that they made until the faces appeared in the front of the Hospital Wing. As she was standing a bit further away and the two students’ lower halves were hidden by a cart of supplies that separated them, the brunette witch simply believed they were embracing in a chummy sort of fashion.

For a moment, Greta did notice that the boy had kind of an odd look on his face, so maybe he wasn’t really into the embrace? However, Greta knew better than to assume these sorts of things, so she did not say a word about it.

“Can I help you, dears?” she sweetly inquired, continuing to casually stock bits of supplies in the cart when she obviously just needed to look downwards to understand the motivation behind their visit today.

With Ethan able to sit down while she got the form completed, Sophia was able to relax just a tiny bit.  She knew it was better that he was off the leg and not exerting himself.  As she completed the form, she asked him the questions she did not know how to answer.  By the time she had the form finished, Sophia helped him back up and over to the desk, which is when she saw Healer Lunes approaching.  Sophia was quite grateful to see the woman.

"Help him," Sophia asked, her voice breaking with conncern for Ethan.  "Please?  It's his leg."  With that, she passed the form over to the healer and waited to find out which station to help Ethan over to.

As he sat i his seat, the one that Sophia got him into, he moved around a bit. But it wasn’t helping, he knew that he needed to stop trying to move his legs. Also, it didn’t help that these seats were not the best. He was more upset with himself that he couldn’t do a simple spell. Was it that hard to make a bubble. He was great at dueling, but couldn’t make a proper bubble jinx work. This would go down as the second worst day of his life, he didn’t tell many people about the first. Sophia knew a little about it, but he doesn’t talk about it a lot and she doesn’t ask. When he was ready he would talk about it.

Not paying attention to what was happening. Miss Lunes showed up asking how she could help them. Sophia kept going all the talking, as he wanted to try and move his legs and he couldn’t do that. Thinking back to what happened in second year, it wasn’t the same, but it was on his legs. The fact that the darts with in his leg.

“Am I going to die?” He hoped not, he hated having that thought in his mind. Why would James allow those things at Hogwarts if she didn’t make sure they could cast the bubble jinx correct first. He was asking himself questions to stop thinking about the pain.

A crease formed in between her eyebrows as she picked up on the panicked undertones of the girl’s voice, along with the boy’s prediction of death. Letting the bag of cotton swabs drop onto the cart, Greta raised up slightly on her toes to lean over and finally got a decent glimpse at a huge dart sticking right out of the boy’s leg. Her eyes widened ever so slightly and she barely resisted letting out a small gasp, stifling it at the last second. Despite the concerning sight, it would not do for Greta’s reaction to panic the children.

“Yes, let’s get you sitting down, dear.”

With forced calmness (but with delicate speed) she came out from around the cart and assisted Sophia in gently lowering Ethan onto a bed. “How…um, what…” the Healer began to inquire, indecisive as to how to word it. “What are these?”

Sophia was trying her best to keep her voice calm and soothing for Ethan but she could not completely hide her nervousness and worry about his injury from anyone trained to hear everything, such as Healer Lunes.  Thankfully, this meant the healer began dealing with the situation.  Hearing Ethan's question, Sophia tried to reassure him.  "No, we're here now.  The healer will take care of it and you'll be fine," she said as soothingly as possible.

With Healer Lunes help, Sophia aided Ethan in moving to one of the beds and sitting on it.  At the healer's question, Sophia's eyes widened a bit but she did not let Ethan see the change in her expression.  Instead, she went into that place in her mind where Care of Magical Creatures 'lived' and began giving the facts that the professor might need along with the important details of the lesson they had come from that caused this.

"These are darts from an Erkling.  Ethan's bubble failed in our Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson just now," she explained.

If he wasn’t in so much pain and thinking he was going to die, he wouldn’t be worried. But these darts were still in his leg, he hoped that they wouldn’t kill him. It seems like he was just going to be sitting there for the rest of the day. Not thinking that he would be moved from this chair, but finally he was moved and he was now laying down. But the healer didn’t seem to know what was going on.

Did she not know what these were, that were sticking out of his leg? Ethan now thought for sure he was going to die laying here. Grabbing Sophia hand, he didn’t want to say something he would regret, only because he was in pain at this moment.

Glad that Sophia was there, she could answer the question. Leaning over to Sophia. “Was this the smartest thing, how does she not know what these are?” Grinding his teeth together, as he was trying to move his leg, couldn’t the healer just take them out, he just wanted to walk again and feel better.

Greta did not know if there was some sort of poison that addled the boy’s mind, but did he really think that she would not hear him mutter to Sophia when the Healer was in such close proximity? The comment squeezed at her heart slightly, but she did not address it any further than with a brief flick of her blue eyes. “I can’t just pop them out,” she informed him gently, unaware that she was answering an unspoken question. Her wand trailed down his leg and she softly muttered a charm. “Obtorpesco.”

The former Hufflepuff continued talking, partially to herself and partially to the two students. She leaned in for a closer look at the limb as the Numbing Charm took effect. “It’s kind of like when you Accio something from across the room. It just zooms towards you without taking care of what it might hit along the way, like a vase on a shelf or a glass on a table. Except in this case, the room is your leg and the fragile things are your arteries and veins.” While she was skilled at the Hemorrhage Halting Charm, Greta did not enjoy utilizing that spell as a first-choice course of action. “I’ll have to pull it out slowly and repair everything inside your leg magically as I go, okay?"

Gently, she pressed her thumb print against Ethan’s skin to test if it had numbed appropriately yet. “How is it feeling now?” After she asked, a thought crossed her mind; could there have been any sort of venom associated? There weren’t any signs of that sort of thing on his skin, but it was still possible. “Any itching? Burning?”

Sophia winced as Ethan questioned the healer's skill and squeezed his hand gently to reassure him.  "She knows what she's doing.  Sometimes it's hard to tell what creature spikes are from as they look so much alike," she told him, hoping he would accept that and relax just a little bit.  If not relax, at least trust Healer Lunes a little bit more.

The healer's analogy was a good one and she hoped it would work in soothing Ethan just a little bit to understand what was happening.  However, she realized that the Healer had not had a lot of time to look at his previous records in the wing so she offered, "His legs were injured before.  A couple of years ago.  Badly. . ."  Sophia could only hope that it was enough information for Healer Lunes to understand what Ethan was fearing and worried about the most.

Why couldn’t she just pop them out, this was the most annoying thing in the world. First James let that creature lose and allowing this to happen and now he was laying here wanting these darts to leave, he couldn’t just stand the fact that they had to wait. Looking at the healer,he tried his best not to say something and Sophia was there to help him calm down a little, he might just be freaking out more than a normal person at this moment.

Nodding his head, he just went long with it,but before he knew it, his legs were numb. “Where are my legs, what did you do to my legs?” He needed to get up and leave, but he couldn’t. Ethan was freaking out. “Did you break my legs again, like the last time?” He might just freaked out a little more the normal, then she asked how was his legs feeling.

“I feel nothing, nothing at all. Do I even have legs anymore?” Looking up and noticing that Sophia was still there. “I still have my legs right? They are not broken, or gone, or anything?” He could just look down, but he didn’t.

He should have told Sophia to write a little more about his legs and the attack in his second year. It might have helped this situation at this moment of him just freaking out and not listening to what was happening.

It would figure that the one child that she did not immediately forcefeed Calming Draught would be one that probably needed it.

Greta deliberated for a moment, before resigning to simply dealing with the child’s outbursts. The time that it would take to go gather the potion would be too long, especially if she was unsure of any sort of venom component of these nasty-looking spikes that were deeply nested in the boy’s leg. Thankfully, it seemed that the Numbing Charm was taking appropriate effect in such a timely fashion.

“I did not break your legs,” she began to calmly, but sternly inform Ethan, before the girl’s words registered with the former Hufflepuff and she took a closer look at the boy’s legs, physically and magically. The spell that she used to magically detect injury or wounds produced a faint glow around the heavily pigmented penetration sites, indicating that there was current minor or prior major damage there. Greta was known for sometimes being a bit dense about some things, but between the children’s comments and her own experiences at Hogwarts, even this situation could not escape her.

Her eyes immediately softened and she reached for the boy’s hand. Her other hand reached up to her temple and she swept away the brunette-auburn hair that was there, revealing patches of skin that were not quite the same color as the rest of her face. Most notably was the shiny, crooked heart-shaped scar that showed how the acid from the Death Eater’s wand had so barely missed her eye.

“I’m sorry you had to go through something like that. You’re not alone, I promise. And I also promise I’ll never take your legs. My plan is to give them back to you, actually”

With a bit of a smile, she let her hair fall back into place and gave the boy’s hand one last squeeze before beginning to draw the dart out of his leg with one hand while the other utilized her wand to begin knitting back together muscle and tissue. “You’ll feel a bit of a pressure, but it shouldn’t hurt. If it begins to hurt, say something.”

Sophia did not know all of the details about Ethan's injury but she hoped that she knew enough to get it across to Healer Lunes how serious it had been.  She was almost holding her breath as the healer continued examining the Hufflepuff and Ethan's panic continued until she saw the healer pause before pulling back her hair and showing Ethan a scar.  It was then Sophia was finally able to relax just a bit and knew the healer had understood what she had been trying to communicate.

Sophia mouthed a silent thank you to the woman and quietly held Ethan's hand as Healer Lunes acknowledged Ethan's fears and the root of them and then began to work on removing the darts from his leg.  "You'll be okay," she whispered to him.  "Really!"

Knowing that he should calm down, but he was freaking out. Would you blame him for freaking out, when he was attacked his second year and then there were darts in his legs. Ethan believed that anyone would be freaking out. He knew that the healer didn’t break his legs, but he just couldn’t help but think that, he couldn’t feel them at all. What was he supposed to think.

Taking a deep breath, he was trying to be calm. He knew that healer knew what she was doing. She wouldn’t be working here if she didn’t know, right? Ethan sure hoped so. This wasn’t something he wanted to deal with, why couldn’t his spell just worked, why did he have trouble with the spell in defense class. Spells were something he was good at. Just this time it didn’t work.

He didn’t know what she was doing, he closed his eyes, but that wasn't working at all. He was starting to think about the events again. He wanted those memories to go away, they were something stuck there for the rest of his life. There had to be something to take away those memories, this was the magical world. He was sure there would be a spell or potion or something.

Feeling the healer's hand on one of his hand, he looked up. Taking another deep breath.

Hearing that he wasn’t alone, he knew that much. The death eater attacked the school, there was more people that dealt with more than just broken legs. His friend Alayna had to be knocked out, because of the spell that she was placed under.

Then he felt Sophia hold his other hand, he turned to her. His eyes were wet, and he knew that he might start the tears soon, something that he didn’t want. He didn’t want anyone to see him cry at all. “Okay, I will…” He said, feeling the pressure on his legs, and it hurt a little. But he wasn’t going to say anything, he just squeezed Sophia hand, hoping that he wouldn’t break her hand, from how hard he was squeezing it.

Feeling another pressure, “bloody hell.” He called out, that one hurt worse than the first one.

One hundred percent of her attention and focus was zeroed in on the task at hand, all sound and movement at the periphery fading away as Greta worked to gingerly draw out the first dart. The Healer had taken extra care with the initial dart because she was unsure of what the shaft of the dart would look like; worst case scenario was that it would be completely covered in spines, jagged edges that would rip tissue as it was extracted. Luckily, while it was sharp, it was relatively smooth.

Greta allowed herself the briefest of moments to balk at the nastily pointy end that had been burrowed deep in Ethan’s leg before setting it on the table and heading back in. The time that it took for the second one to be extracted was far less than the first, a rhythm setting in to the steady motion of ‘pull, repair…pull, repair…’

“Sorry,” she murmured absently before prodding the area around the puncture wounds with gentle fingers. A few drops of blood oozed out and the tissues were puffy, but overall…it looked decent. Greta’s blue eyes flicked upwards, taking in the sight of the boy’s face.

What looked decent to her, a professional, would not look decent to him, a child.

After cleaning away any bits of blood with a quietly uttered ‘Tergeo’, the former Hufflpeuff began to apply essence of dittany to the wounds. “This will help heal up the cuts left behind,” she explained. “It’ll give you less scarring, too.”

Sophia kept Ethan's hand in hers and laid her other hand on top of his, holding his tight so that he would be encouraged to grip her hands if the removal of the darts hurt.  She was fairly sure it did as she watched Healer Lunes working on each one, slowly and carefully.  Sophia winced at the sight of the ends of one of them when it was removed.  She really hoped Ethan did not see it.

"Essence of Dittany," Sophia commented when the healer explained that what she was putting on after taking them all out would help with healing.  She remembered her father using it when she'd get hurt as a child and reading about it in the potions books.  It would definitely help his wounds.

He could feel the pulls out of his legs, it was a horrible pain. Even if his legs were numb, he tried to just looked over at Sophia so he wasn’t able to see how big or small the darts were at all. Ethan was still wondering how his bubble didn’t work and James just allowed them to go in without making sure that their bubble worked right. Ethan couldn’t think about that at this moment, he was grabbing a hold of Sophia hand as hard as he could. He hoped that he wasn’t going to hurt her at all.

Closing his eyes, he just wanted this to end and go back to his dorm and sleep a little. Not knowing if he would be able to sleep, but at least he would be in his bed and just resting for the rest of the day.

Then he felt something, and heard the healer say a spell. He opened his eyes, and looked up and she was telling him that it was going to help and give him less scaring. That was a plus, he didn’t want more scaring, he already had enough on his legs from hsi second year. “Thank, thank you.” He told the healer and then looked back over Sophia and just held her hand.

Greta was pleased with the way the spells were taking hold despite the presence of some rather pretty bruising that surrounded the penetration sites. “Finite incantantum,” she uttered, passing her wand over the numbed portions of Ethan’s legs. The feeling would begin returning to them, but slowly. After all, Greta had just yanked some rather large and sharp darts from his legs; he did not want to be feeling everything quite yet.

“You are still going to be rather sore, I expect,” she warned him sternly, but then a smile crossed her face. “But this is already looking very good. Here, I want you to take some of this.” Greta rustled around in the cart until she came up with a small container of bruise balm. It had a strong, herbaceous odor. “I want you to apply some of this three times a day for the next two days and then come back up here just so I can make sure it’s looking okay.” After handing the balm over, she straightened up. “You’re welcome to lay here for as long as you like. Your legs will still feel kind of funny and a little weak, so it might take you some time before you feel up to walking.”

The brunette Healer began straightening up the area, tossing away bits of bloody cloth and the like. She was about to chuck the darts into the bin as well, but hesitated. “…Do you want to keep these for any reason?” Greta offered, although she was a little unsure about if it was a good idea to let a student be in possession of such a sharp object. “Or can I toss them?”

It seemed like it was taking forever yet it seemed like it did not take that long at all for the healer to remove the needles from the erkling and tend to the wounds.  Sometimes Ethan's hand gripped hers so tightly and then would relax.  It developed into a pattern and it seemed to lessen in intensity as she neared the end.  It didn't hurt and Sophia was even able to prepare for it as she followed the healer's work with her eyes.

Soon enough, the last one was out and the wounds tended to.  Sophia looked over at the healer and mouthed a very sincere 'thank you' to the woman as she continued to hold Ethan's hand.

Was she done, was he able to leave. This is one place he decided that he never wanted to be at again. He just hoped that he would be able to walk and feel better soon. Hoping that Professor James would think about what she did and make sure that everyone knew how to make a bubble. He was still shocked at himself, that his bubble didn’t work out well.

“Sore, that shouldn’t be that horrible. As long as it goes away soon.” He wanted to go back to dueling. While the tournament wasn’t till after the break, he needed to get ready for it. Grabbing the item that she handed to him. “I can… I can do that.” Ethan said, his eyes were feeling a little week. He was a lot more tired than he believe he was going to be. Was it because he was just laying here, and also because she was done poking into his skin taking out the darts.

Lay here, that might be something he needed to do. “Laying here might be for the best. I don’t want Sophia to have to walk me down all those stairs.” He wanted to be able to walk on his own again. As he was holding her hand, she asked if he wanted to keep them.

“Toss them, I don’t need those things.” Why would anyone want to keep them, it would be beyond Ethan.
