lock-picking & bachata workshop

____________________________________student led learning___________________________________

Juan was excited, to say the least. He’d taught his friends in Kolkatta how to dance bachata when they’d come over to his parents’ rented house those few months, and he’d missed being able to start off with a fresh canvas. His family all knew how to dance it. Some amazingly, like his sisters, and some… not so much. He thought of Tony with his awkward and angular hip movements, all while being offbeat. Poor, poor Tony.

So when he’d heard he could lead his own dancing class, Juan had jumped at the opportunity. Granted, it hadn’t just been “dancing class.” It was a class in general and he figured he might as well lure more people by throwing some lock-picking in there. It seemed to be a popular skill to want to learn. And since he wanted to teach dancing, really, no one lost. It was an even tradeoff. Even if he’d had to spring up dancing on people.

Now, with a little magical radio that he’d struggled to even get to work, Juan was prepared. He’d managed to figure out how to record himself making noises, and singing, because for some reason no wizard station played bachata. Heathens. So… If anyone complained about the music, he would personally whip them. It was a small class. They’d learn quickly.

He looked around the library and wondered if the library was the best place for a dancing lesson and then upon closer inspection of his own mind, he realised he really didn’t care. Libraries were boring and dumb anyways. Oh… Right.

Juan reached over the shelves and threw down the “assigned textbook” for his class. Since he couldn’t very well find anything in this library about the stuff he was teaching, he’d opted to grab a random book. Not just any book. A picture book! “A Picture Guide to Bubotubers and Flobberworms: How Tiny Creatures Help Potioneers Save Lives” by F. L. Yerrible… He’d had no choice. Carter had forced him to choose some reading for his little class.

At least it had more pictures than pages. And it only had 54 pages!

Setting down little bits of parchment to mark corners and edges of tiny boxes, Juan looked at the spaces happily. Each pair would be put into a little box and they wouldn’t be able to leave. Bachata was all about being close to whomever you were dancing, so obviously… they had to stay close. Oh… Maybe he should start them off on that later? Nah.

His preparations done, Juan seated himself on the floor, next to his radio and waited, wiggling with anticipation.

Hello and welcome to the Lock-Picking & Bachata Workshop! What's going on?

This is our starting thread! And we are going to basically go through the motions

of learning how to dance bachata! What is this? It's a dance that started in the

Dominican Republic and eventually made its way to a large portion of Latin America.

Ok but what's going on here? This is a complete RP thread in which your character will

be learning from Juan Garcia how to dance. Once you all arrive, Juan will place you each

into pairs. This may or may not work out for you and you are free to fight him on this.

What else? You are free to post as much or as little as you want, interacting with the

other people that signed up or being a shy wallflower. If you choose option two, beware

Juan. He likes messing with shy people. And yeah... Just have fun with this!

At some point after Juan thinks you're all either done with the basics of bachata, or

the majority start to ask about lock-picking, we will conclude this thread. The other

threads for this workshop will be posted as promised, so do not feel the need to rush

through this RP. It's for fun and to learn more about your character :)

Aaaaaaand...I think that's it. Alright... Feel free to post away!

Ever since Hazel understood the importance of tutus, she had wanted to learn to dance. It was almost like an overwhelming concern of hers that she couldn't really understand the basic footwork of dancing. So, when she saw the sign-up for Batcha lessons, Hazel immediately scrawled her name on the sheet.

She was nervous. That much you could tell. Her hands were shaking and she wouldn't seem to stop bouncing on the balls of her feet. Yet, she was also excited. Her dancing dreams were finally coming true. Even despite the fact she would learn how to lockpick. Her mum would be appalled.

Hazel glanced around the room, spotting a familiar head of curls. @Simon Reed was just across the way, and she immediately lit up with a warm smile when she caught his eye. It wouldn't be so nerve-wracking if she were to dance with him. That way she could trust the Ravenclaw to calm her down if she got a bit to wrapped up in trying to not mess up.

That didn't stop the blush rising to her cheeks. What kind of nonsense was this?

When Sofie had signed up for Juan's Student Led Workshop or whatever it was called, she'd basically only seen the words LOCK PICKING and had obviously jumped right on board. While she was aware, in theory, that dancing was going to be involved, she'd always assumed it was more of a 'if you want to' sort of thing. But now that she was here in the library with her bff who had clearly gone to all kinds of trouble to get this organized, she knew that wasn't going to be an option. Juan could be pretty stubborn when he wanted to be, and the Ravenclaw knew that was the Juan she was going to be dealing with today.

She was now really just hoping that she'd get to be paired with her brother. Schuyler actually liked dancing and she figured she could just lean on him and let him do the work and skate through this bit until they got to the fun part.

"Okay Juan, I'm ready," she informed the Slytherin with a nod and a grin, and it was then that she noticed the book he'd thrown down. "Ooooh!" Sofie liked picture books. Especially the kind with fun places to go and visit and things to do and what the heck was this? "Bubotubers and Flobberworms?" she read part of the title aloud. Maybe she knew even less about dancing than she thought she did. She sent Juan an incredulous look before placing the book back down from where she'd grabbed it.

But anyway, now she was definitely ready! Bring on the bacharana... or whatever.

It had not been a prank, Simon had willingly singed up for a Bachata and Lock-Picking class... He hadn't known what Bachata was prior to the class, he figured it was perhaps it was an incantation that went along with breaking in to places but after talking to his older sister Olive, she explained that it was in fact a form of dancing. He had to talk himself into attending the class at all after that, he figured that it wouldn't be so bad to learn how to learn how to dance... perhaps his older self would thank him for it eventually...

He stood in front of the Library, also realizing that the last time he had been in the Library, @Madam Carter had given him a punishment that would involuntarily turn him into a mute any time he stepped inside the premise. So, not only was he taking dance lessons... he wouldn't be able to explain that he couldn't talk due the enchanted rope on his wrist. Simon rocked on his heels for a minute before forcing himself to enter the Library. He attempted to speak, and although his mouth formed words, no sound came out.

Simon stood across from the Slytherin boy on the floor who was fidgeting with a radio, and watched as other classmates began to shuffle in. His eyes widened in fear? excitement? pure embarrassment? What would @Hazel Wheeler think of him signing up for this class? Regardless he waved her over, perhaps she could explain to everybody why he couldn't talk... and maybe they would be paired off together as well. That wouldn't be so bad.

(P.S.A: SIMON CAN'T SPEAK WHILE IN THE LIBRARY, THANKS TO THE HANDY WORK OF MADAM CARTER, DX)

There were two skills that Wednesday didn’t need: dancing and lock picking. The former, although potentially beneficial, wasn’t high up on Wednesday’s priorities and the latter, the lock picking, would undoubtedly put her one step in the direction towards a life of crime. Yet, she had signed up for a workshop that guaranteed both.

She was curious, not for what could be learned but for the disaster that would end up occurring. The last time she was in the library, there were furbies and glitter and the wrath of Madam Carter. Wednesday doubted this would be any different. She’d take her chances however, she couldn’t resist a good show.

A picture book wasn’t a good show.

“What is this?” She furrowed her eyebrows, flipping through the pages. Was this supposed to be the assigned reading? “What do worms have to do with Bachata and lock picking?!”

Harper was really there to learn lock-picking. Truth be told, she didn’t even know what bachata was, had half-glanced over the sign-up sheet and sort of mentally blacked out the little hand-drawn dancing people, out of fear. It was probably another magical wizarding whatever, she thought, like fwoopers or transfiguration, which she’d just suffer through or get out of. After that, she’d happily get down with the theory and the finer points of opening muggle locks.

Her ignorance was not resolved when she walked into the library and took note of a radio, a book about magical microorganisms, a couple of other students—mostly girls, it looked like, so far— and that student assistant from flying lesson who’d tried to help her summon her broom. She looked again at the book with a frown. Bachata was a potions thing, maybe? “Oh…hi…” she said to the third-year Juan, while eyeing the boxes marked out on the floor. Maybe that was for their cauldrons. Or lock-picking demonstrations. She was very confused. “Um…I’m Harper…this is the workshop thing, right?” she said.

Then she spotted Sofie and quickly approached her; it was nice to see someone familiar at least. And hopefully her mentor would be thoroughly impressed with her lock-picking prowess. “Hi Sofie…” Harper greeted the older Ravenclaw. “Um, what’s bachata?”

Atlas moved into the library and his head kept darting around. He knew the guy teaching these lessons. The Slytherin was older and always around the common room and bonding activities they did. Also something Quidditch. He saw that name on signups right? So he knew the guy he was looking for. Red couldn't make it since the other male was still mourning his loss of looking like a complete idiot during his last contact with Mr. Unspeakable.

He spotted a group forming in the library and quickly darted towards the pack. "Hey," Atlas nodded towards the lot and plopped down next to Simon, the only other first year he knew. "Hey Simon." Atlas said pleasantly. If he could wait for the boy to get in public he could try to tear his pants down and everyone will laugh at Simon like they had when Atlas had lost his.

He would have revenge since this kid showed his poke-a-dot undies to the whole park.

Atlas. Would. Have. His. Revenge.

Margaret hated dancing. She hated breaking rules. She hated group activities. She hated meeting new people.

But if doing those things meant she got to spend more time with Juan Garcia, she would grit her teeth and get through possibly the worst few hours of her life. Margaret had never been one to attract too many friends, considering she liked to sit in the corner by herself and hide her face behind a thick book, and once one person showed any bit of interest in spending time with her, she latched onto him like a leech.

Her stomach churned at the thought of learning to pick a lock. If her mother found out about this "extracurricular", Margaret would be locked up in a tower and barred from ever attending Hogwarts again. And if her mother found out that her daughter was spending time learning to dance, Margaret would be locked up in a tower and barred from ever talking to Juan again. Actually, if her mother found out that Margaret was spending time with Juan at all, she would be locked up in a tower and barred from life in itself.

Margaret flipped through the assigned "textbook", trying to look for any page with more than ten words. This wasn't a book, it was a collection of photos. This was Margaret's worst nightmare! Frowning, she placed the book back on the ground, as displeased as the others in Juan's choice in reading assignment.

Schuyler didn't want to learn how to pick locks, but when he saw Sofie eagerly run up to the Juan's sign up and put her own name down, he knew he'd be signing up right after her. He didn't like trouble nor rule breaking and this sounded like both of those things mixed together with a giant helping of danger. All three things his twin specialized in. Not only did he need to make sure she and Juan didn't hurt themselves, he was also low key kind of a follower with a bad case of FOMO. So here he was.

He was pleased to learn that the first lesson was dancing because Schuyler Clement could bust a move, much to his own embarrassment. Of course he couldn't be good at sports like most boys his age, nope it had to be dancing because of course he had to have the lamest secret talent ever. Why couldn't he just get one cool skill?

He managed to spot Sofie who was flipping through a book near Juan. It was strange to see her actually reading until he saw it was a book with a ton of pictures and then he wasn't surprised anymore. "Hey Sof, whatcha reading?" He cast a glance over her shoulder, looking perplexed at what on earth it was that he was even looking at in the pictures. It didn't help that he hadn't come at the beginning of the book.

He turned to Juan and sat down next to him on the floor. "Hey bro, you ready to start teaching?" Juan looked pretty excited so he assumed he wasn't nervous at all, not that his starbro ever was about anything ever. Could Juan teach Sky about that was well?

He grinned at Harper who was by Sofie and gave her wave. Were they bad role models since they were encouraging their mentee to do things that might get her in trouble? Probably, but those were thoughts for another day.

The first girl to show up was a tiny Hufflepuff. He said tiny, but really she was probably just around his height. He hadn’t grown much since first year, unfortunately. He was still waiting for that growth spurt. But she didn’t really acknowledge him, so he wondered if maybe she was in the wrong spot. He hoped not, “What’s your name, again?” He held out his hand from the floor, waiting until everyone else showed up.

And then a familiar face! “Yo. You better be. Because we are da-a-a-aaaaaaaaaancing. It’s gonna be awesome,” he told her, “I managed to make my own bachata song because NONE of the wizarding stations play it. Can you believe… Yeah. Ignore the books. We’re not using it. Carter just forced me to have textbooks so I grabbed a picture book. It’s okay. Ignore it.”

He looked up when he saw another new face come in and Juan furrowed his brow. What was it with these first years and not speaking to him? Was he scary to them? Juan pouted, wondering if maybe he should make an effort to be more outgoing and approachable. He didn’t think he was scary… “Uh… hi! You are?” he asked, holding out his hand to the new Ravenclaw boy.

Wait… Were those Slytherin robes? Juan’s eyes widened when he saw a housemate and he popped up. That was already half of his little workshop, so he might as well start looking like he was 100% prepared even if he was only 34% prepared. It was all going to be fi—“Um… Ignore the books. They don’t matter,” he answered quickly, grabbing the book and throwing it behind him. Because they weren’t in a library or anything.

Another Ravenclaw soon joined and Juan’s smile spread when she timidly approached. “Hey!” he beamed, grabbing her hand and shaking it overenthusiastically, “I’m Juan! Nice to meet you Harper!” In truth, he remembered the girl’s face but… he’d never really caught a name. Now he had! “Yes! I am the instructor person and we will be dancing and picking locks. It’s gonna be great, I promise!” At least it seemed like she knew Sofie… So that was… good. A good analysis. He’d keep that in mind.

He started mentally mapping out where each of the pairs would go and who would be in them when another Slytherin approached. And plopped down. “No, no. Stand up. We’re gonna get all warmed up first because dancing is all about moving. We’re gonna leave here sweaty and smelly and you’re gonna like it!” Catching the tail-end of the Slytherin boy’s conversation, he learned the silent Ravenclaw’s name was… Simon. Hehe. Simon says. They could play that to warm up right?

Margaret joined and Juan offered her a hug before draping his arm over her, watching her flip through the book, “It’s not actually our book for this, I promise.” Then he moved onward, releasing her and letting her go mingle, because the entire concept of this workshop was really to teach a few things and to mingle. And now there was a Sky! After they’d made up, Juan was now… okay around Sky. They were okay.

Ready to start teaching? OH YEAH!

“UP UP UP!” he said, clapping his hands enthusiastically. This was what teachers did right? “So we’re gonna start off by finding a buddy. BUT! I’m choosing your buddy. You go… with you. You go with you… You go here. And you come here,” he started moving people around, either motioning or when they were too slow, nudging their arms.

“Sweet ok! If you don’t like your partner, sucks. So let’s go around and get to know each other! I’m Juan. Slytherin. And… let’s do one thing about ourselves that we think people should know. Um… I can speak three languages! And let’s go… that way.”

Did he... not have any Gryffindors? Nerdy goody two-shoes then. They'd just be the most boring dancers at parties.

╒════════════════════════ Pᴀʀᴛɴᴇʀ Tɪᴍᴇ! ══════════════════════════╗

Here are your partners according to Juan. You can swap when he's not looking. Or just stick

with it. Either way, it's up to you how you choose to roleplay this new... friendship.

                                HAZEL WHEELER :: SCHUYLER CLEMENT

                               SOFIE CLEMENT :: ATLAS WYRMWORT

                               SIMON REED :: WEDNESDAY MORTENSEN

MARGARET SCHOENBERGER :: HARPER LIN-WILLIAMS

Soooooooooo what's going on? Juan's gotten everyone in partners and we're gonna go

around the circle and introduce each other. Have fun Simon. Be ready to get really up

and close with your partner. You're gonna be the best of friends once you leave this place.

You do NOT need to post in the same order you posted before. You don't have to

wait for everyone to reply before replying once again if you're feeling inspired to

reply either. We're here for dancing and fun times! I will post once everyone has

"introduced" themselves <3

Sofie didn’t share Juan’s enthusiasm for dancing but couldn’t help grinning at him anyway. She liked to have fun and she knew anything Juan was in charge of would definitely qualify. “Um, yeah I believe that,” she answered honestly, and she rolled her eyes at his comment about the book. “That seems unnecessary.” Like sure, the librarian was hosting this shindig so required reading made sense but they were learning to dance. You couldn’t learn that from a book?

“Hey Harper!” Sofie greeted the first year warmly. “Juan’s cool. This is gunna be great!” Juan had already introduced himself, but Sofie told her mentee his name anyway. She liked to be helpful like that. “Oh is that what it's called? It’s a dance, apparently.” She’d been calling it the bacharana. Whoops. How embarrassing.

“Sky! Look! Harper’s here!” She announced cheerfully, pointing to the first year as if her brother hadn’t just walked up and waved to her already. See? She was just so helpful.

And then things really got going. Juan was in teacher!mode, clapping his hands and yelling at them. He was like a real teacher! Aw. When Sofie came face to face with her partner for this dancing thing, she was disappointed because this boy wasn’t her brother and he was younger than she was which meant she wouldn’t be able to slack off without Juan noticing. “Hi!” She greeted him anyway, because she was a friendly person.

But then Teacher!Juan told everyone to introduce themselves and Sofie was all about that life. “Oh, me next! Hi, I’m Sofie, I’m a Ravenclaw third year, and I’m like THISCLOSE to hanging out with the mermaids in the Lake.” She pinched her thumb and index finger super close together, so everyone knew just how close she was, and nodded so everyone knew she was being serious. Last year she’d almost managed to steal gillyweed from the greenhouses with Ollie and Sera, so all she needed now was to actually steal gillyweed from the greenhouses, and then go and find the mermaids. She was nearly there.

Atlas's partner? It was not-Simon. In fact, Wendy was put with Simon. Atlas glared towards the girl before his eyes landed back on Simon. He slowly yanked himself to his feet and the lot of them were expected to introduce themselves. "Hi!" He responded back to Sofie. "Waitonemoment." He said darting away from the girl as he slammed his mouth closer to Wendy's vicinity.

"Psssst. Wendy. Swap partners with me." Atlas whispered quietly as Sofie just finished off talking about how she was close to finding mermaids in the lake. Atlas coughed once, out of surprise, then quickly began to let words pour out his mouth. "Yeah yeah. I'm Atlas." He swung back next to Sofie so he could introduce himself. "I'm..." Ah crap. He had to think of a thing to say about himself.

Oh right.

He pulled his wand out, completely decked out in Sam Rockett merch. "I'm Sam Rockett's biggest fan and one day I'm gonna be the best duelist the world has ever seen." He said nodding his head. "Okay next person go." Then he darted back next to Wendy again whispering: "Go next to her she won't notice if we swap now." Then he pushed gently at Wendy's back a few times trying to get the other first year to play along.

Clearly, getting to dance with Simon meant a lot to Atlas.

"Oh, shoot. Sorry, my name is Hazel," Hazel replied to Juan who held out his hand to her. She quickly accepted his greeting before returning to the spot in her circle as the conversation moved on when someone else entered.

After Simon had waved her over, Hazel moved to join him in the circle. There was no way he was going to have any fun without being able to talk. The band on his wrist had to be quite a problem. Hazel shifted nervously next to him as Juan started to pair them off. Would she be partnered with Si? What about Atlas?

Nope. Neither. She looked over at the brunette third year across the room and shot him a nervous smile. Well, at least she would meet someone new. Hazel moved again around the circle once he directed her to the boy she knew as 'you'.

"Hi, I'm Hazel," she said with a smile as she held out her hand. Might as well get to know someone she'd be learning to dance with.

Introductions were underway, and after Atlas made his comment about Sam Rockett, it was Hazel's turn.

"Oh! Hi! My name is Hazel Wheeler. I'm a first year Hufflepuff, and I really like to garden."

Margaret walked as slowly as a snail (but faster than @Atlas Wyrmwort's snail) towards her partner so that Juan would nudge her arm. Any bit of contact with him would help with the stress that would soon ensue when everyone exploded with rage and jealousy at her amazing dance skills.

"Hi," she greeted the Ravenclaw girl with a small smile. Before she was forced to string along some fake conversation, Juan started them off in a circle of introductions. Margaret felt relieved she didn't have to try and carry on some conversation one-on-one with Harper, but she also didn't appreciate having to waste her time learning "interesting" facts about people.

She narrowed her eyes at Sofie - mermaids? She'd be one step closer to hanging out with mermaids after Margaret kicked her into the lake for being way too bubbly.

Sam Rockett? What, was Atlas a fan of salad?

Hazel? Margaret made a mental note to stomp on any shrubs she walked by on her way back to the dorm.

"Oh, um, hi! I'm Margaret..." she introduced herself sweetly. "Um... I'm a - a third year? And... er... I like... reading..."

Thankfully he didn't have to sit alone for long, Hazel had spotted him and accepted his invitation, although any promise of having a good time was spoiled by the fact that Atlas Wormwarts had planted himself beside them. He half-heartedly saluted the Slytherin boy in response to his upbeat greeting. The Ravenclaw couldn't help wondering what would posses him to approach him at all. You could say that any previous encounter between the pair had been very unpleasant... although Simon still stood by the fact that the pantsing had been completely accidental, the slap on the head during the water pistol game had not been.

He turned his attention back to the front of the room where Juan, their instructor, was explaining their next steps. He looked at Hazel, hopeful that they would be paired up together but Juan had different pairings in mind. Simon's face fell a little and his shoulders drooped, at least Hazel had known his situation, but his new partner Friday... she probably would think he was being a complete jerk... and how was he supposed to say anything about himself to the class!?

He nodded along as the introductions began, he found himself distracted as he watched Atlas running back and forth between his own partner and Tuesday... He shook his head and noticed that everyone's attention was on him. He cleared his throat noiselessly and attempted to explain his current situation with his hands and gestures. He opened his mouth and pointed to it and shook his hand back and forth across his neck. He paused to see if anybody could tell what he was attempting to portray, but noticed a few blank stares.

"I CAN'T TALK!" he mouthed slowly and silently, and pointed to his wrist as a last resort and then towards Madam Carter's office.

“…a dance? Dancing?” Harper mumbled, feeling her stomach pitch. It was all coming back to her now. She had to resist the urge to grab Sofie’s arm and pull it down, or at least duck away and avert her gaze, as her mentor cheerfully alerted Schuyler to her presence. Great, she thought as Schuyler waved at her. Now she’d get to humiliate herself in front of both of her mentors.

They all were partnered up—at least it wouldn’t be like getting picked last for sports teams, she thought, the public humiliation wasn’t going to go quite that far—and then it was time for introductions, which Harper hated. She wracked her brain for something good to say about herself as Sofie went on about mermaids, a couple of first-years from other houses said some random things that Harper didn’t even process, and her dancing partner introduced herself as Margaret.

Harper finished mentally rehearsing her introduction, and she tuned back in just in time to watch the boy next to her, who was acting very strangely. One moment he was opening his mouth, the next he was running his hand across his neck—was he threatening them? was he just really sick, did he need help?—and then he mouthed something that Harper didn’t catch at all. She looked around the circle a little helplessly, wishing she wasn’t supposed to go next. Why did the weirdest one have to be next to her, Harper thought bitterly.

After a beat or two of awkward silence, she finally just shook her head and went on with her introduction. “Um…okay…” she said, as though she were still waiting for someone to cut in, stop everything, and immediately fireman-carry the mute first-year boy off to the hospital wing. “Well, anyway. I’m Harper, I’m in Ravenclaw…um, I like animals. And I hate transfiguration,” she said. All that stress for that.

Sky got up from where he had been sitting next Juan after his bro ordered everyone up loudly. He was pretty sure Juan didn't have an indoor voice. He then started pairing people up. He would have rather had Sofie as a partner, but that wasn't who Juan assigned him to of course. He was pretty sure his partner was a first year girl who introduced herself as Hazel.

"Hi, I'm Schuyler," he greeted her back. She seemed nice so perhaps this wouldn't be so bad.

He listened to everyone's introductions, trying commit everyone face with their name to his memory. He was learning all kinds of interesting things about them. Apparently his partner liked planets, one boy couldn't speak for some reason, and his mentee really liked animals.

"Hi I'm Schuyler. I'm a Ravenclaw third year and I have a very large comic book collection."

Even though Sofie didn't really want to dance, she kinda just wanted to get it all over and done with and was impatient to begin. She was so so so tempted to jump in front of her mentee and brother both and introduce them quickly to everyone with 'interesting facts' like 'Harper has the coolest mentors ever', and 'Sky went to science camp cause he's super smart' but figured both of them, and also probably Juan, wouldn't really thank her for that.

Hmm where had her partner gone, though? When Sofie looked around at the people nearest her, she was fairly certain the boy who'd just been here next to her was now way over there. What was even going on? WAS HER PARTNER TRYING TO DITCH HER? Rude. "Juan, I think you have to be my partner now," she told him, shrugging in his direction. "I swear, I didn't do anything to him." She wondered what the odds would be that the Slytherin believed her. Pretty slim, she had to admit.
