To find the Sorting Form, click on the "Sort Me!" tab at the top of the page.    Before you go to fill out the form, make sure that you have a username that follows our rules. If you don't, your form will be rejected. You can change your name once yourself, by going to Account Settings -> Display Name. If you've already used your one change, you can request a name change in this topic. Be sure to read the first post in the topic carefully so we can get you updated without any back and forth.   Don't rush to answer the form! There's no prize for sending it in first. Please take your time and fill out the form thoughtfully, so the hat will have the information it needs to put your character in the right house.     Calendar: Sorting Form appears: Thursday, October 5th Sorting Form closes: Friday, November 3rd (No forms will be accepted after this date) The Sorting Ceremony closes: Sunday, November 5th, about 10am Central Time You find out your new house: Sunday, November 5th, 11 am Central Time First day of the new school year: Monday, November 6th   (For reference: Central Time Zone includes Chicago, Illinois)   How to get sorted:   1. Register with a name that follows our rules. The registration agreement explains the rules about names. You can also find them in the Rules.   2. Remember you may only send in one form total for this school year. If you send forms in from multiple accounts, we will not sort ANY of them. Then we have to feel bad about not sorting you. Don't make us feel bad, please.   3. Click on the Sort Me tab and fill out the sorting form as thoroughly as possible. The better we understand your character, the more likely we can put you in the right house. See "How to use the form" below if you're confused. For some in depth information on each house, please check out this topic on sorting. (Note: After you fill out the form, a copy will be PMed to you. Please save that because we delete them from our system after sorting.)   4. Wait for a PM from the Sorting Hat. Be patient, it could take a few days. If you don't receive a PM from the Sorting Hat within 4 or 5 days, contact one of the moderators.   5. If your form is: Accepted: Congratulations! You should now go post in the Sorting Ceremony topic in the New Member resources forum. This is very important. This post is where you'll go to find out what the Sorting Hat had to say about you. Don't skip this step! Rejected: Don't worry, you can still be sorted. Be sure to read the reasons for the rejection carefully, then edit your form (just click on the Get Sorted! link again) to fix the problem. Once you've done that, you can send the form in again. 6. That's it! Once you've gotten your acceptance letter AND posted in the Sorting Ceremony, you're all set. You'll find out where the Sorting Hat put you on Sorting day when you can check the Great Hall for the edited Sorting Ceremony.   How to use the form: The form is pretty straightforward and user friendly. Here are a couple tips: You don't need to fill the whole thing in at one sitting. You can finish one page at a time and save it. Then finish the rest later. Don't use your browser's Back or Forward buttons. Use the buttons in the form to Navigate.  If you don't fill out all the questions on a page, you can't save or move on. If you don't meet the word number requirements in the In Depth section, you can't submit the form. Use the "Check Word Count" buttons to see how many words you've used. If you fill in the wrong answers on the quiz page, you won't be able to submit the form. After you've submitted the form, you can't access it anymore. But if your form is rejected, you'll be able to see it again with your old answers still filled in. Still have questions? Ask here.    Note: Section I: Short Answer Please include a brief explanation with each answer. I'd like to remind you all to include an explanation with all the short answer questions. The answers to those questions aren't very useful for sorting unless you explain them.   Otherwise, we don't have enough information to sort you with. (Translation: we'll have to reject it.)     Many thanks as always to Arianna Wright for her hard work revising and updating the form and to Faraz Memon for initially coding it many years ago. <3

The Spaces Between Us Hold All Our Secrets

It was one of the most terrifying moments of her entire life. Alayna had been through many unpleasant ordeals in the past; ones full of fear and indescribable confusion, but not a single one of them could top this. She looked up toward her new company in horror, face flushed so crimson she looked like a bloody tomato. Her location at that present moment was so terribly inconvenient and… what was she being accused of again? What?! She didn’t…! But wait. To make more sense of the tale, it’d probably be best to start from the beginning- when her no good, furry, creature beast decided that pre-made food was no longer good enough for him. The redhead had just come down from her dormitory when she spotted Bunny stalking towards what she assumed was someone’s pet rat. The rat squeaked, her cat hissed, and in just a few seconds the pair was ready to partake in a full-out war.

“Bunny, no!” Alayna cried out in dismay, scrambling forward to reclaim her cat before he committed murder. She went to grab for him, but at just that second the portrait hole to her common room swung open and both rat and cat made a bee-line for the exit. And the fourteen year old took off after them. “Please!” she pleaded with her pet as she ran. “Please, I’ll give you anything else! Please- JAKE!”  She barely noticed the older boy before ramming right into him, but there wasn’t any time for an apology now. Her hand latched onto his arm and she pulled him with her down the corridor.

“Bunny, he’s…. he’s trying to eat somebody! Please help me stop him!”

"Your bunny's trying to eat somebody...?!" a confused Jake asked as he was tugged down the hall after his fellow Gryffindor.

It had been a pretty peaceful morning so far, but peaceful mornings didn't seem to last very long at Hogwarts, as Jake had found out many times before. Today the peace was broken when a frantic Alayna had practically bowled Jake over in a mad dash down the hallway. Before he could even ask what was wrong, the small boy had been pulled along too (Even at age fifteen, Jake still unfortunately seemed to be very draggable).

But when Jake heard the panic in Alayna's voice, and received her plea for help, he knew that practicing charmed drawings was going to have to wait. He had to help her...especially 'cause it sounded like there were lives in danger. How big was Alayna's bunny anyways...?

Perhaps it’d been unkind to essentially kidnap the fifth year, but she was desperate. Alayna’s gaze fearfully pinned itself to the space ahead, watching Bunny’s every movement as he weaved through the legs of various classmates. He was in hot pursuit, that much was certain, and she had to stop him. “A… a rat or something was…. It was in the common room and… there! They’re right there!” Her free hand pointed toward the end of a swishing, fluffy white tail just before it disappeared down another corridor. “I’m gunna be the owner of a murderer. BUNNY! THAT’S IT, MISTER. NO MORE CATNIP FOR YOU! OR TREATS. OR ANYTHING FOR AN ENTIRE MONTH!

Several people turned to stare at her as she screamed, but at that point Alayna didn’t even care. She continued on with her sprint, Jake right behind her, right up until she eyes fell upon the scene of… absolutely nothing.

The corridor she’d thought Bunny had gone down wasn’t completely empty. There were a few people walking around and talking about Merlin knows what, but no cat, rat, hair, or even… dare she think it? Blood was anywhere to be found. “I… he can’t… did you see where he went?!” A few frantic, tense moments followed and then… there was a hiss. And the cat and rat went flying out from around another corner and straight into an open door to elsewhere. “BUNNY!” Alayna screamed, and she took off after him once more- stopping not until she reached the entrance to an unfamiliar space. She’d never seen this room before, whatever it was, and she might’ve been a bit more wary to enter it if there weren’t the distinct sounds of squeaks and shuffling inside. But she couldn't afford to be wary now.

Those sounds could only mean one thing: there was something in there... her cat, maybe? And if she hesitated for too long something terrible would surely happen. “…Jake?" Shifting to look back toward the boy, Alayna's brows furrowed. "Do you know how to catch animals that... don't want caught?"

Alayna began to point...but Jake didn't SEE any bunnies, just a---Ohhhhh...Bunny was a cat....right...well that made a lot more sense.

What was in danger wasn't a human either, but a rat. A rat that was PROBABLY somebody's pet. If anything ever happened to Jake's owl Snowball, he didn't even know WHAT he would do, and the idea of somebody losing their pet was hard to even think about. Even worse, it was Alayna's own pet that was about to do the murder herself. And if that happened, then Alayna was right...her and Bunny would both have it on their conscience forever. Jake too, really, who would practically be an accomplice at this point for being unable to stop the tragedy.

Something had to be done.

They chased the cat as fast as they could (though Bunny did NOT seem to care much about Alayna's threats). Alayna turned the corner, Jake just behind her. For a moment he thought the animals were lost, but then they were back in sight, darting into a room that Jake didn't recognize.

"Well...I um...I can do the accio spell, but if the cat doesn't wanna be caught, then it probably doesn't wanna be summoned either. We might haveta do it if we don't get another choice. But 'til then..." Jake pondered. "Maybe...we can just talk to her...I mean...SOMETIMES that works," he said hopefully.

Jake approached the door quietly and spoke in a gentle voice. He wasn't going to yell at her, or threaten...just try to explain the situation. "Bunny? Are you in there? I know you want that rat...but he's a pet...He belongs to somebody, and he can't be eaten," Jake implored. "So how 'bout...uh oh..." Jake mumbled, as the sounds of scuffling began to get louder .

"...And sometimes it doesn't," Jake admitted. What was Plan B?

She imagined that if matters started going down a truly dangerous path, one of the two of them or both could take a dive and try and grab Bunny before he had the chance to properly fight them off. Such an action was likely to lead to bloodied arms though… and she really didn’t want to risk Jake being hurt in any way. Alayna stood and nibbled anxiously at her bottom lip while the boy offered his thoughts, eyes focused on the dark room in front of them. It was so dark, in fact, that she imagined that even if they did dive inside there was a good chance the animals could slip out without them noticing. “Oh… maybe” she replied to the boy's suggestion. “He’s not listening to me, but… maybe you. Since he doesn’t know you?”

Stepping back to let Jake come closer, Alayna watched in tense anticipation as he started to talk into the room. And for a moment she actually thought it might work, but then a louder scuffle was heard followed by an even louder squeak. “Ugh, what’re we going to do!” the girl cried out in alarm. Her heart rate increased at the prospect of having to report to someone that a pet had died and a fresh wave of fear washed over her. Then… an idea came. And she turned to look back at her housemate.

Shhh…” she told him as she attentively reached out to take his hand. Slowly she pulled him forward and through the doorway, careful to keep each footstep as quiet as possible. Once they were both inside, she gently pressed the door closed behind them and then used her free hand to reach for her wand. “Ohsorry” Alayna whispered when she accidentally bumped Jake in the process. It was difficult to see much of anything in the dark, but before long her fingers were wrapping around her wands’ handle. “Lumos!”

Holding the wood out, the room instantly lit up and revealed several rows of shelves and things. There were dusty buckets, books, and…

A crash drew Alayna’s attention back and up towards one of the shelves, where the form of something was very clearly skittering frantically away. “Jake! I… they couldn't have gone up there, could they?!"

Students nowadays were so...confused. Weird, peculiar individuals that had the most crazy ideas. It was a relatively known fact that if you gave these people anything to take care of they would end up messing it up. Weird people are not meant to take care pets or other people. They have to learn to take care themselves. But no. Hogwarts had this thing going on for ages that allowed students to care for a pet and name it and feed it and allow it to roam around the castle freely.

Which by the years had become a bit of annoying. It wasn't unusual for Barnabas to wake up and see a cat's pee on the tapestry or a rat's poop. It was gross. He would have to either wait if he wasn't in a mood for a walk for that dirty old hag named Filch to clean him up OR make himself go away just to avoid the sight.

Over the years he would also learn to just... ignore it for the most part but today he wasn't going to ignore it. Students had a funny way of naming their pets. More often they would give them names that would leave you confused. Like for example the name Bunny that it was the name of the cat that was chasing a rat. Barnabas looked amused but he couldn't help feel sorry for the cat and the rat and their owners.

Speak of the devil. Two gryffindors chasing after the cat and the rat. Feeling slightly annoyed - despite the initial amusement - Barnabas had to say something. "Dear girl, you don't name a CAT Bunny. It messes with their psychology you know? And cats are supposed to chase rats." Just in case she wasn't aware of this. Which she was. It is the most fundamental trait of being a cat.

"Er...I don't think the portrait likes your names," Jake whispered to Alayna, but she was too busy looking into the dark room ahead of them to take heed of the criticisms. He didn't say anything else when she shushed him, probably worried that he might alert the cat that they were coming, and ruin their chance to get him cornered.

Alayna's eyes lit with the spark of an idea. It seemed that she had discovered plan B. The girl took Jake's hand, slowly leading him forward. It was weird...feeling her hand on his. Jake had held hands with Grace many times, but Alayna's hand was a lot different from Grace's hand. Yes...different. That was the word. Alayna's hand was softer...gentler. Such a delicate touch that you could scarcely feel it at all. It was warm too. It felt sort of nice...in a strange way. How was her hand so soft...?

The door closed behind them, leaving them momentarily in pitch blackness. Jake froze, his heartbeat quickening as he reached for his wand, startling as Alayna bumped into him in the darkness. "Itsfine," he murmured back, but before he could light his wand the room was lit by Alayna's instead.

Somewhere in here there was a cat and a rat, though Jake didn't really see any signs of them any longer. Of course, things were pretty black in here, even lit by wandlight, but he was fine. It was just a dark closet, nothing to see there. Definitely nothing to worry about, nope. Certainly not for a fifth-year. Right....

As Alayna scanned the room, Jake studied her face in the wandlight. The care and concern in her eyes was obvious. She was scarcely looking at him, because she so badly wanted to solve this problem before anything bad could happen. He hoped he would be up to the task of helping.

“Jake! I… they couldn't have gone up there, could they?!"

"Up there...? Up...where? There...?"  Jake asked, peering up to try and see some sign of the two animals, but seeing none. "But uh...I'm not sure HOW to get up there..." If that WAS where they were they were in trouble. That shelf was pretty high, and unfortunately neither him nor Alayna were very big.

Worry flooded through her at the thought of one or both of the animals having literally climbed up the wall. There was no way to be sure how stable the shelves were and she didn’t trust her magical abilities quite enough to use it in a situation like this; where it was dark and someone’s pet could be seriously hurt with just one mistake. And the sounds kept getting louder and louder, each scuffle and hiss making her heart skip a beat. “There. Right there!” she squeaked, pointing up to the highest shelf. “Oh, how are we even going to get there?!” In a momentary lapse of judgment, she released the boy’s hand and walked right up the row of shelves. Then she took in a deep breath of air, put her hands on the shelf closest to her chest.

And she would've gone to try and climb up, but when she touched it there was a squish and she pulled her hand away to see a bit of gum stuck to it. “Ew, it’s sticky!” she groaned in disgust. She tried desperately to wipe the residue off on her robes, but it didn’t really work. “You know the shower charm, don’t you?” Walking back over to Jake, Alayna offered him a brief pathetic look before holding her hands out to him. “Help?”

She hesitated for a second, awkwardly rocking back on her heels before she turned back to the shelves. And her eyes fell upon a discarded broomstick.

Wait. They weren’t in…? Oh Merlin. A light flush flooded Alayna’s cheeks at the mere prospect. She did not need to be found. In a broom closet. With Jake Morent.

…was this really where her cousins went to snog?

…..

………………………..

“Um, that-” the redhead squeaked with a gesture toward the broom. “Maybe we could use that?”

"Uh, yeah...I know it," Jake said. It had actually been the first dueling spell he'd learned besides the very basics. He'd used to be so proud of himself for being able to do it. That was long before he'd actually won a dueling tournament and learned many spells that were much more advanced. Now it seemed silly to have been so proud of such a simple charm, but at the time Jake had barely even stepped foot in the dueling chamber. He'd come a very long way. "Don't worry. Here, aspergo." Jake cast, washing off Alayna's hands as best he could.

Jake listened for a moment, but the crashing and scuffling sounds had ceased. That was good. Hopefully it meant that the cat had lost sight of its prey in the dark closet, and wasn't gonna try to eat it anymore. Now they just had to find a way to get him down from whichever shelf he had perched upon. Alayna pointed to a broom.

"I dunno if it's long enough...." Jake said doubtfully, but he picked up the broom all the same. "What am I supposeda do with it anyways? Just...um...like this?" he asked, raising it as high as he could to poke at the high shelves. If there WAS a cat up there, perhaps they could nudge it down, but...

"Wait...stop...I mean, I don't wanna...you know...hurt anything." Jake said, looking up at the shelf. There was still cat and rat unaccounted for in this little closet, and the shelf was too high up for Jake to see anything. Getting poked at with a broom might get the cat down but it was far from the nicest way. It was still quiet...maybe if they were careful it wouldn't be necessary. "I don't hear anything," Jake whispered. "So maybe Bunny is just resting. Maybe the rat already escaped. We just need to get up to him, and stay quiet."

The broom mightn’t have been able to help them get to the animals, but… Alayna wondered if it might be possible to use it and make the animals come to them. Wiping her now thoroughly moist hands off on her robes, the third year watched as Jake plucked up the broom’s handle and held it up to one of the higher shelves. The bristles skimmed across the dusty surface. “You won’t hurt them” she offered at Jake’s concern. “Cats know how to jump pretty far and rats… there’s little places they can hide, right? So… yes. We’ve just got to get to one somehow.”  She stood watching him poke around for a few moments more, but even that didn’t seem to be working too well.

And the rustling sounds she’d once heard had stopped. That either meant the two creatures had tired themselves out, or…

No. No- she couldn’t even think it!

“Maybe… one of us could look up there and see if they see them? And if we don’t, uhh… I guess we can just start poking around in random holes?” Stepping up closer to the shelves, she fiddled with her wand’s handle for a moment and then offered, “…I could try and give you a boost?”

"Me...?" Jake repeated, his cheeks turning red. Alayna was offering to lift HIM up. "N-No, no way..." he objected, a little too forcefully. Jake was constantly all too aware of his size. It was hard not to be...He frequently got mistaken for being in a younger year than he was. But he wasn't a child. And Alayna was even smaller than HE was (even if it was only by a little bit). There was no way a younger girl was gonna give HIM a boost. He could just imagine anybody finding out about that

"No...I mean...I'll be on the bottom. I'll boost you, I can do it." he insisted. Jake was the older one, and he was the boy. It had to be him that did it...he wasn't sure if he COULD, but he had to.

Still blushing, Jake put his back against the shelf. As Alayna came to let him lift her up, Jake realized that maybe this idea wasn't any better than the first one. The two small teens stood awkwardly in front of each other, as Jake tried to figure out how he was supposed to lift her without touching anything he....wasn't supposed to touch (And what WAS he supposed to touch? What were the rules on that?) "Um...so...I'm just gonna...um....grab on here and lift up....so....ok...?" Jake asked nervously, bending down to wrap his arms around her legs.

Jake let his arms loosely cross over the backs of her kneecaps. "Ready...?" the boy asked, afraid to lift too early. Alayna's hands rested on his shoulders, and Jake felt his cheeks burning even hotter than before. He hoped he hadn't made a huge mistake...he bit his lip as he remembered a time last year when he had tried to lift weights with Luke. He'd ended up being crushed by the bar. He really hoped Alayna hadn't had a big breakfast..."Okay, um...here we go..." With a grunt, Jake lifted her.

Jake’s reaction to her suggestion instantly made Alayna regret ever saying it. She looked away from him and tried to hide the flush coloring her cheeks. “Okay” she whispered in reply. “I… we can think of some other way.” Cautiously she tried to look about the room for some means to help them, but before she could find anything proper another suggestion was aired and her eyes widened. Him… lift her? Technically it wouldn’t that much different than the opposite, but the idea of it still made the girl uncomfortable. And she couldn’t even pinpoint why. This was just Jake! It wasn’t like he would do anything.

After a brief moment of debate though (and major hesitation), the girl nodded to him. “…alright” Walking closer to him, Alayna stopped just close enough for Jake to be able to grab her and managed to stare at him for a total of one second before she had to look away. She could feel her face getting hotter even before he started talking again and went to wrap his arms around her knees. But it was just Jake she tried to remind herself. It was just Jake. It was just Jake. It was just Jake…  oh Merlin he was hugging her tighter.

Ready” Alayna barely managed to squeak out at Jake’s question and then her feet were off the ground. The ordeal was hardly a stable one, too. The boy’s arms shook violently as they struggled to lift her higher and the girl was very much aware of how much she was leaning into him. She tried desperately to hone her focus onto reaching for the highest shelves and looking into them, but it was hard. Very hard, and made even harder when she began to wobble.

“Jake!” the redhead cried out. “Jake, you’ve got to try and hold still.  I… I can’t…”

The most disastrous of things took place before she could finish her sentence. Remember that terrifying moment that was mentioned before? Yeah- that happened just after Jake Morent’s arms gave out and Alayna Weasley came tumbling down. Right on top of him.

“Jake! Jake, you’ve got to try and hold still.  I… I can’t…”

"I am...!" Jake muttered through gritted teeth. His small arms were trembling, screaming as they tried to support Alayna's weight. Alayna had no idea how hard he WAS trying. Because the last thing in the world Jake wanted to do was to prove to her once and for all just how weak he was. But try as he might, he couldn't maintain his balance. The boy wobbled and tried his best to steady himself. Just a little longer...he didn't have to hold her for long. He had to be strong enough for just a little while longer, and then they'd get the cat and he could put her down and everything would be fine.

But just as he finished speaking his arms couldn't hold on any more, and to Jake's dismay they suddenly gave way.

Alayna toppled onto Jake, and Jake tumbled onto his back, Alayna landing on top of him. Jake groaned. There was no pain - no physical wound. The only thing damaged was Jake's fragile pride.

Shame filled the small Gryffindor boy as he lay on the ground. He wished he had a time turner....if he had one he could go back and try again. He COULD have held her...if he tried again...With a clatter, Alayna's wand rolled away. The tip extinguished, and suddenly plunged them into blackness. And then, instinctively, Jake did something else that he would regret. With a gasp, he clung to Alayna, his arms moving on their own, clutching the younger girl close as his heartbeat quickened. He couldn't help it....it was just a reaction to the dark. In that moment, Jake hated himself. And he would have let go right then and there. Would have muttered an apology, got out from under her, and went to go hide in Gryffindor Tower and wallow in his shame. But before he could...before he had the chance...something worse happened.

The door opened.

There she was, minding her own business like a perfectly well-behaved student, thinking of nothing but getting back to the library to start on that three foot essay on vanishing that professor Ripley set on them.  Addison didn't like to assume things, but she was willing to bet that second term would be harder than the first. There were more practical, wand-based subjects, and her grades would be founded upon how successful she was at some of her worst subjects (namely: charms and transfiguration).

"Ew, it's sticky!"

She halted. Craned her neck. Where did that come from? What was sticky? Tilting her head, Addison fell still and silent, keeping her ears open for any further sounds.

"I dunno if it's long enough. What am I supposed to do with it anyways?"

She nearly choked. There had to be some context she was missing, because that definitely sounded inappropriate. It was either that, or her mind was stuck in the gutter.

"Wait...stop...I mean, I don't wanna...you know...hurt anything."

"Oh, hell no," the blonde mumbled, returning to motion as she padded about the corridor softly, searching for the source of the indecent conversation happening. The voices were muffled, which told her they were hidden behind a door. But, which one? The hallways of Hogwarts were lined with an innumerable amount of doors. Addison went from one to the next, gently placing her ear against the wood to see if she'd found the right one.

"I guess we can start poking around in random holes?"

Getting closer.

"I'll be on the bottom... so...I'm just gonna...um...grab on here and lift up..."

Also, more urgent.

"Jake!"

There was a crash, followed by a groan, just as Addison approached the ill-fated closet. Her hand wrapped around the handle, and she paused, uncertain about whether or not she actually wanted to expose her eyes to whatever was on the other side. The answer was no, but she went ahead and wrenched the door open, anyway.

There they were, lying on the ground, Alayna on top of Jake. He had his hands wrapped around her and - Addison wanted to throw up. Jake and Alayna? Jake Morent and Alayna Weasley, going at it in a broom closet?

"GET OUT, RIGHT NOW." Addison stormed forward, grasped Alayna by the arm, and yanked her up onto her feet. She pointedly averted her gaze from Jake, lest the lower half of his body be... indecent. "You've got five seconds to sort yourself and be in that corridor - five seconds starting now." She dragged Alayna as she exited the closet, and roughly stood the girl up against the wall. "Fix your robes. Don't say a word, you hear me? Not. One. Word."

How on earth was she going to explain this to professor Fjord?

It was the most terrible, awkward, humiliating moment of her entire life. Alayna’s wand fell from her grip as she tumbled to the ground, instantly robbing both her and Jake of light and the ability to see. She could feel though, that sense was definitely intact and after she regained her bearings somewhat it screamed that what she’d managed to land on was not solid ground. It was warm. It was breathing. And unless the closets of Hogwarts had arms, she was pretty sure someone… Jake… oh no. “Uh… um…” the redhead stuttered, but before she could do much more than that a bright light washed over them. And Addison Toft stood in the doorway.

She could only imagine how their current position might’ve looked to her, but Alayna didn’t have time to dwell on it.  The prefect had latched onto her arm in a second and yanked her up and away Jake. “We weren’t-!” she tried to explain, but the words got caught in her throat as she stumbled across the floor after her captor.  And when she was brought to the corridor wall, all the fourteen year old could do was shrink before her.

Alayna gave a nod, brushed down her robes, tried not to cry… and failed.

The door slammed open. Light flooded in that made Jake squint. The red-faced boy turned his head and stared up at Addison, caught red-handed in his weakness. But while he felt sheepish under her gaze, the last thing that he expected was the sudden fury that came at them.

"GET OUT, RIGHT NOW." Addison yelled, as fiercely as Jake had ever heard her. The boy flinched back as if the words themselves had barreled into him, and then Alayna was yanked off of him forcefully. Jake was given five seconds to exit the closet, with no time to think or even process what was happening.

1...2...Jake could practically hear in his head, the silence interminable...3....He couldn't move...4.....Jake scurried forward, crawling out of the closet as quickly as he could.

In a daze, Jake stood to his feet. The tone that Addison was using was one that had never been used on Jake before. He didn't get yelled at. Not like this...It was beyond an 'in trouble' voice. It was much much worse. His mouth dropped in silent questioning as his mind spun. Was that closet off limits? Was it a mistake?

"B-but...A-Addison...w-w-we....w-what did...." Jake mumbled, his voice quivering.

What had they done wrong...??

Rounding on Jake, Addison glared at him, jabbing a finger towards Alayna. "You know she's related to an old headmaster, right? The one that came before Flamel?" It was true - Kelly told her so! And in that case, Jake would be wise to be very careful with his intentions regarding those related to a person who was influential enough to have been in charge of Hogwarts. She squeezed her eyes shut and waved her hands, shivering as she pushed out the mental image of what Jake and Alayna had been doing in the closet.

"I don't want to know what you two did - actually, I already know, and it's grossing me out. We might be old enough to make those decisions, but she's only thirteen, Jake."  Maybe fourteen. Addison didn't have time to check. Gawkrodger would probably be proud of Jake for putting those sexual education lessons to use, but she doubted the professor's intentions had been for his students to experiment with that lesson material in a broom closet. In the middle of the day. At school.

The witch pinched the bridge of her nose, and sighed. "Listen, I know you guys are - you're free to make your own decisions. I'm sorry for being so rough with you," she said to Alayna. "I'm not here to judge, so if this is what you two really want, then... seriously, at least try to be more private about it?" Addison glared at Jake. He was the older one of the two, and should have been more responsible about their business. "Like, really? You guys were doing it in a closet that anybody could walk by? And you weren't even trying to be quiet!"

The tears came before she could stop them, summoned forth by the sheer insanity of what’d just happened. For all Alayna knew her cat was still in that closet somewhere, feasting happily away at someone’s pet rat. And she couldn’t even do anything about it because… why? The redhead’s mind tried to think things through, find some reason that made sense of Addison’s sudden burst of anger, but the only thing she could think of didn’t make sense at all. Broom closets… broom closets were used for snogging. But was snogging forbidden? She’d seen other people do it! She’d heard the stories! And even if that were the case, they’d not even been doing it! But if Addison thought so…

Oh no.

Alayna could feel herself go numb as pure horror washed over her. She looked up toward the prefect and wanted to say something, to protest, to plea her innocence, but a finger being jabbed toward her made doing it impossible. ‘You know she’s related to an old headmaster, right?’ Ugh, no! “I… that… we…” the girl squeaked, but she wasn’t loud enough. Addison didn’t hear her. Staring wide-eyed at the blonde’s back, the third year worked desperately to regain control of herself. Keep breathing. Stop crying. Pull yourself together.

But any and all efforts were crushed into dust when the prefect kept talking. Because being accused of snogging someone she didn’t even like that way wasn’t bad enough. Being found in a broom closet, sprawled on top of him wasn’t plenty humiliating by itself…

No. Neither of those things was bad enough to top the worst day of her life. But hearing the words ‘you guys were doing it in a broom closet’? Yes. That definitely was.

What little ability she had left to speak completely disappeared as the brunt of Addison’s accusation smacked into Alayna.  All she could do was stare at her, stunned, until finally she regained control of her arms again and threw her cloak over her head to hide her face from view.

No...” she groaned into the fabric.

"You guys were doing it in a closet that anybody could walk by? And you weren't even trying to be quiet!"

Whelp.

If Professor James wasn't already halfway around the corner of the corridor she would have backtracked and disappeared. Dealing with young minds on a professional level was one thing - dealing with anyone on a personal level was not exactly her forte (Just ask Althaus). Instead she reminded herself that she knew where Quayle kept the good 'adult juice' and strode forward resolved to be imbibing heavily before the night evening finished.

The clicking that signaled her arrival no doubt punctuated the air before her scent or her presence but the trio might have been too engaged in their interaction to notice her before she loomed behind Addison Toft.

"What's all this then....?" She took in Addison's exasperation, Alayna's embarrassment and Jake's nervousness as well as the open broom closet door. "You've got to be kidding me." The temperature of the corridor likely dropped several degrees.

Her dark wand appeared and she dismissed the Gryffindor prefect without much ceremony. "Off." A small hand gesture, nothing more. She silenced Jake Morent with a quick flick of her wand and turned her attention on Alayna Weasley.

"Are you injured?" A third year, by Salazar... either Professor James was getting very old or Jake Morent was a horrific predator and needed to be put down.

For a while, Jake was so completely stunned that when Addison admonished him for 'doing it' in the closet, his question was about to be 'doing WHAT?'

But as his mouth opened to ask that question, the horrible lightbulb went off, and suddenly everything that Addison had just said made MUCH more sense. Jake dropped his mouth in disgust that rivaled the look that Addison had been giving them when she'd opened the closet door (and no wonder why!) But when it fully sunk in just what Addison THOUGHT she had just seen them doing, the disgust very quickly turned to horror.

"W-w-wait! Addison, no! We weren't...! We.....I'd NEVER---"

Unfortunately, luck was not on Jake's side today. Before he could even finish an explanation, he was struck cold by the arrival of one of the most dreaded faces at Hogwarts. Deputy Headmaster and Child-Destroyer Professor James.

"What's all this then....? You've got to be kidding me."

A squeak of dismay was all that came out of Jake's mouth. His stomach twisted as he stared up at their professor who always made him feel twice as small as he already was. Then there was nothing, and this time it wasn't because he was frozen. Helplessly his mouth flapped, but the flick of her wand had taken his voice. He tried harder to speak, to gesture...but it was useless. The only thing left he could do was shake his head. This was all wrong...it wasn't what she thought it was! If he could just explain he could tell her everything and it would all make sense. But he couldn't. And now what? Was everybody at school going to find out? And what if they did...? What if they thought it was true! Jake imagined all of his friends hearing the story. Would they believe it?

Was she going to yell at them? Were they in trouble? Were they gonna get shackled?? Was she going to write home to his parents? Tell them what had happened? The thought was too much to bear. Why was this happening to him? HOW was this happening to him...? He was innocent! Jake's eyes filled with tears and he lowered his head.

They weren't - yeah right. They'd never - yeah right. Addison already steeled herself for the bevy of excuses and pleas for mercy; she usually didn't mind giving people like Jake and Alayna, who were innocent and well-meaning, a pass on things, but this had been far too heinous to ignore.  She hadn't even known they liked each other that way, and it turned out there was a lot she didn't know about their relationship. They liked each other a lot. Addison opened her mouth to speak, but was interjected by a sharp, menacing click of footsteps that could belong to none other than...

"Professor James!" Addison snapped to attention, whirling around to face the severe woman. This was going to be bad. Very bad. While she wanted the pair of Gryffindors to reflect carefully on their actions and impress the weight of how loud and obvious they were being, she never would have wanted to get professor James involved. "It's nothing, I just - um - they were-"

"Off."

Her mouth snapped shut, as she was given the cue to leave. Even though she wanted to help Alayna and Jake get out of this mess, she knew better than to get on James' wrong side, especially when she had her wand out. Addison swallowed the lump in her throat, and nodded meekly, slipping to the side and out of the path of the professor's ire. Addison shrugged at the pair from behind James' back, as if to say 'sorry, but you kind of got yourselves into this?'' and then left in a hurry.

She was dead. She was a goner. Life as she knew it was officially over. Never had Alayna wished more for her permanent removal from the world, for this? This was just too much. She knew for a fact that the redness of her cheeks would only further add suspicion if she were to reveal it (and how could it not when they were being accused of… of… what?! UGH.), so she decidedly remained hidden for the next several moments. Jake’s frantic attempts at protest was all that kept her from having a complete meltdown. The fourteen year old latched onto the sound of his voice and hoped with every ounce of her soul that it’d be enough for Addison to grant them some mercy. They were friends after all, weren’t they?! She knew them! And she had to know they wouldn’t do… do something like THAT.

But no such mercy was given. Instead, the voice of another broke Jake off and instantly sent a fresh wave of dread through Alayna’s gut. P-professor? Oh no.

Knowing full well that not doing anything now would lead to… detention? A letter to her father? Worse? The girl forced herself to pull the cloak away and look up toward Professor James. Taking in the full sight of her though- terrifying expression and all, any and all chances to form a coherent sentence crumbled to dust. And the dust burst into a raging fire when Addison dashed away, leaving them alone with her.

No….

Alayna followed the blonde off with her eyes for a second before they snapped back to the professor and she swallowed back the desire to vomit. Was she injured? Did she mean physically or mentally? Emotionally? Socially? She was pretty sure she’d never be able to show her face in public again when this was all over and that was pretty damaging… yet saying such probably wouldn’t help either of them now. But she had to say something.

“I… we… um…” Alayna finally managed to force out in a croak. She shook her head. “Wewerejusttryingtofindmykitty."

Addison Toft was smarter than she looked and disappeared. Professor James made a small note in her mental fifth year file before paying attention to the mumbling of the tinier Gryffindor in front of her. The words she could piece together were not comforting. At all.

"Oh... kay..." The fingertips of Professor James' non-wand hand did nothing to relieve the heavy pressure in her head despite being pressed into either side of the bridge of her nose.  There were so many things wrong with that explanation but Jenna did not feel qualified to explain these subtleties.

"I'm choosing to hear that as you were looking for a feline animal that is not located in this broom closet." She did not wait for confirmation to continue. "In the future, I would advise you to contain your co-ed searches for any lost objects to public areas with open doors." Each word was carefully spaced and calmly delivered. She felt no need to spook Alayna any more than the girl already was.

"I'd also suggest you put a marking charm on your cat's collar. It makes locating them vastly more efficient endeavors. The charm thinks the cat stole the collar from you and leads you to it, it works much better than a blind search. I should think you've learned it in charms class by now." Maybe? If not that was Fawley's problem.

"In any event I sincerely doubt you would advance your cause by the intense search you appeared to be making of Mr. Morent's person." The sarcasm was unavoidable. At least they were both fully clothed. She wanted to shudder with the sick images of other 'couples' she'd happened across in her time. Children were gross. James successfully suppressed the physical urge.

After she was finished talking she waited a beat but Alayna hadn't moved.

Professor James inhaled deeply, searching for patience. "Go now," she said with a flick of one hand in a dismissive motion before turning to Jake. "You will come with me." She turned on one heel and started off in the direction of her office and the tone of her 'invitation' was such that Jenna clearly did not relish anything about to transpire.

When all else failed- tell the truth. The fourteen year old was honestly at a loss of what more she could do to prove her innocence. She knew how things must’ve looked. She had been in a broom closet with a boy after all, and that usually meant… well… things. But that wasn’t the case this time! She really hadn’t done anything! There had been absolutely no romantic endeavors taking place here! And she wished so desperately that she could scream that too, but the expression painted across Professor James’ face prevented her from doing it. She was stuck- trapped in a silent and horrified state until she just couldn’t take it anymore.

“But it was…” Alayna squeaked. “We were… it was…”

Her eyes fell to the floor when the woman’s voice broke through hers. Co-ed searches? What was… that… supposed to mean…? If it were at all possible for her face to flush redder than it already was, it would’ve done just that. Her mind became so full of thoughts such as ‘no no no, oh Merlin, no’ that all she could manage to offer to the next statement was a very faint nod. Was that all? Could she go now? Or was she… they weren’t getting detention were they?!

Apparently not- not her, anyway, but what Alayna was instead left with was almost just as bad. ‘I sincerely doubt you would advance your cause by the intense search you appeared to be making of Mr. Morent’s person’ Professor James told her- and the girl grew too mortified to speak, breathe, move, anything. She merely stood there stunned until a hand was waved toward her and she regained awareness of her legs again.

And then Alayna Weasley ran as fast as she could away from Jake and the broom closet.
