Rowan Allard

these days it pays to be so strange

On the first half-way decent day since the end of October, Rowan found herself out exploring the grounds. The snow from the break had melted and the layer of ice that had kept the lake under lock and key was nowhere to be found. There was something in the brown grass and bare trees that felt sad - it pulled at her stomach and reminded her that she too was sad. But the small buds that were forming on the branches were hopeful.

Takko had come out with her - the first time in a long while as the cat hated the snow and would much rather stay curled up near the fireplace in the common room. Next to the lake, she was sprawled out on her back. Takko sat purring with his eyes closed on her chest; she was gently scratching him behind the ears as the sun warmed them both.

It was not unusual to see Desmond outside, but most of the time it was at the quidditch pitch. Today, it was different. He was going to the lake, with the snow melting and the grass coming back. He felt like it would just be the perfect time to go outside. He didn't know what he wanted to do, but it was better then being stuck inside for a few hours. Sure, he could duel or sleep. Then again, he didn't feel like doing any of those things at all. Walking to the lake he saw Rowan and her cat out there. It was odd to see her cat outside, when most of the time it was by the fire place when they were in the common room.

As he walked over to where Rowan was, he sat down next to her, it could be heard from walking on the ice that was melting. It was nice to be able to see the sun, knowing that it was still there. "Taking a nap at the lake Rowan?" He asked, laying down next to him. "Or just working on your tan," That was something that girls did, he didn't know. He was always so confused with everything. He still wanted to know the meaning of learning, some of the learning, that they were doing.

Her eyes stayed closed when she heard a person approaching - it was either going to be someone who liked her or someone who hated her, either way she didn't really want to have to move from her relaxing position. When she heard the familiar voice of Desmond, a smile broke out across her face - that silly boy would find her anywhere, wouldn't he? There was a slight breeze beside her as he sat, the grass tickled her arm when it moved.

"Tan? Me?" She asked, finally opening her eyes to look at the boy. She gestured with her head towards her pale arms - she wasn't the palest person at the school, there were ghosts here after all, but she wasn't one who was exactly tan in any sense of the word, "I thought it would be nice to get out of the castle. Too stuffy in there for me sometimes."

When he took a seat next to Rowan and laid next to her, he face her and could tell that she was smiling after she knew it was him, it seemed to be that she knew where she was at all time. Though, it just seemed to happen that way. He didn't have a map that told him where she was, that was still somewhere in his house. At least that is what he believed. His father wouldn't tell him anything about the map at all, he just wanted to show his friends the map and how cool it was. It could also be a little freaky, knowing where everyone was at all times. He might not like to have that power. He would only want to know where one person is at, just so he would avoid her.

"I am sure that you can tan." Even with showing him her pale arms, "I am sure there is a spell or something that could help you get a tan, if that is what you want." He didn't know what she would want, or not want. It wasn't like he was always asking her. It was just something he thought about. There had to be a spell for everything, maybe he should read something or listen in class. Though that was something that wouldn't ever happen in a million years. "The castle can get stuffy, it is always nice to adventure outside." He said looking at the sky, the clouds passing by. "It is such a nice day, today. Look at the cloud." He pointed to the one that was right above him, "doesn't it look like a rabbit?"

It had been ages since Rowan had done something as simple as watching the clouds; the last time had to have been back in PHP with Edwin. The memory fluttered through her mind for a brief moment before she returned to the situation at hand. It was odd to be doing something so easy. Ever since the school year had started, it was one thing after another - an ongoing battle against her stubborn will. It was like this place was attempting to tear her down and she was fighting tooth and nail to stay afloat.

Being here with Desmond not worrying about the horrors that might await them back in the castle was nice. She didn't have to worry about nearly being caught on fire or any of the people she was currently trying to avoid. She could simply be in this moment. What a nice thing she'd managed to take for granted for all those years. "I'd say it's more like a dinosaur." She said with a smile, "You guys do know about dinosaurs, right?"

Being able to just lay on the ground and watch the clouds, it was nice. It was something he had not done since he was at home last summer with his younger sister. She loved to do these kinds of things. Being able to not do anything, not being around his other classmates that would start something crazy and he always ended up being in the middle of it. It was something he was tired of, but it was something that just happened and he was going to have to deal with it.

Laying here right now, with Rowan, made him not worry about that at all, he was glad he was able to have these moments. It was just nice and sweet. “A dinosaur, I know about those.” he laughed, knowing that Rowan was a muggle born, there were many things that he didn’t know about her world. Sure he wanted to learn about them all. “That is one thing that we do have in common.”

Then another cloud came over, “That one looks like a cat.”

A slight blush creeped up Rowan's cheeks as Desmond confirmed that he did in fact know about dinosaurs. It was so silly of her to assume he wouldn't. It seemed like most wizards were stuck in the dark ages, but dinosaurs were before then - if she could remember her history correctly. Honestly, she should just start assuming that pure bloods knew everything she did about the muggle world and let them ask questions when they didn't understand something. That would save her some embarrassment.

"We have plenty in common." She responded, her voice a bit quieter than usual. It was true; in the short period of time she had spent in the wizarding world, Rowan had found that it wasn't all that different from the muggle world. It just had more inanimate objects doing things. Her attention shifted back to the clouds above them.

She glanced over to the cat shaped cloud and smiled. Takko let out a soft mew at the mention of his species. "I think Takko agrees with you." She said, a giggle punctuating her sentence.

He never cared once if someone ask him questions, sure there were many things he didn’t know about the muggle world, like internet and cell phones and google. He really have to ask Milo about that. It was something he really wanted to know about, Rowan asking questions was something he liked, it helped him understand things. It was something that he really liked, people sometimes were always scared to ask him questions.

They had more in common, that was something he really liked, “that is always good to know.’ He smiled looking back at the clouds, this was one of the most relaxing things in the world. Just staring at the sky and seeing what clouds could look like.

Then he heard a meow, Desmond had forgotten about the cat. It was being so quiet. “I think it looks a lot like Takko.” He said placing his hand out to the kitty. Hoping it would let him pet the cat. “So what do you see?” Looking back at the sky, there were so many different clouds up there today. He could stay here all day. Though he might want to get to quidditch practice soon.

Clouds helped to calm down Rowan's constant racing thoughts. It was hard for her to turn them off and focus on one task. But laying there in the warm grass of early spring was easy, and for a moment she felt a calmness that had avoided her since she'd arrived at the castle. Nothing here was every calm; everyone was always causing some sort of trouble or setting something on fire. Recently, they had taken to loud protests. All she wanted was one day of calm, calamity free relaxation.

Being there with Desmond seemed to be bringing her that. Takko hopped gently off her stomach and made his way over to the boy - he had always been a curious cat and anyone offering to pet him was going to be met with rough licks from his sand paper tongue. Rowan happily let him go; she had let go of any weariness that came from Desmond stealing Takko last term.

"That one looks like a ship." She said, holding up a hand to point towards a cloud off to their right. "Or maybe a dragon if you turn your head."

There was just so much that was happening in life, that Desmond didn’t want to bother with any of it. Laying down with a good friend and just enjoying the outside was always the best. No one was trying to hurt him, or his friends. There was also a cat next to him and it was just awesome. Knowing that the cat didn’t hate him. It seemed that he might as he walked over to him.

Desmond went to pet it, not knowing if that cat was going to allow him to, since he took Takko last term, though he was sorry for it and hoped that the cat wouldn’t mind or wouldn’t remember about it. He was sure the cat remembers, they were smart animals, he just placed his hand out and hoped that the cat would allow Desmond to pet it.

As he turned his head, he could see it looking like a dragon. “I think you are right, that does look like a dragon.” This was just so calming; he didn’t want to ever get up and do anything else for the rest of the day today. Looking at more clouds, he wonders what else he could find.

Takko took a hesitant sniff of Desmond's outstretched hand before leaning into it. Pressing his face gently against the boys fingers hoping for a scratch behind the ears. The feline's purrs were loud; white noise to the nice day they were enjoying together. Between the two of them, he found the perfect sunbeam to lay down in - paws tucked underneath himself, eyes closed, tail swishing gently back and forth.

Rowan's eyes flickered closed as well. She was at peace; a feeling she'd abandoned upon arrival to Hogwarts. Nothing was ever peaceful or easy - even nights in the dorm tended to fall closer to the chaotic side. She'd not felt this way since way back in Brighton, when she and Ollie would spend warm days together enjoying the company of a good friend in a loud city.

"You probably have practice or something, right?' She asked Des, not opening her eyes. She was determined to sit there and enjoy the chaos free moment with every ounce of her small body.

It seemed that the cat liked him, Takko was always a sweet kitty in the common room, just he didn’t want to get to close because he didn’t know if the cat hated him or something. Since what happened in the first term but it seemed that it was alright now. Desmond went to get it some scratches behind the ear, he was sure that cats loved it. Hoping that it everything would be alright; things were clam and it was so nice.

Closing his eyes, and letting the sun go in. He didn’t want to get up, knowing that he had things he was supposed to do and if he was late to quidditch Mercutio wouldn’t be that happy with him at all if he didn’t show up, still this was better. Knowing that he had his friend with him and he was just enjoying time with her that didn’t get them into trouble.

“I do, I know that it will start soon. If I am late, then I will run extra laps.” Maybe he wouldn’t show up, it was much better laying here.

Calmness washed over her; it had been hard to feel truly comfortable since the attacks. She'd even contemplated not returning during the holiday break a few weeks prior. Days like this - days spent with friends who made her feel loved without having to do anything - reminded her why she had to come back. Could she had really lived without talking to Desmond again?

Could she have lived without Hogwarts in general?

A soft breeze blew through the trees, rustling the grass around them and bringing the spring-y smell of the lake wafting towards them. Desmond's response was one she had expected. It seemed that the quid team was always out on the pitch; if they weren't they were probably in the common room talking strategy and drawing up little diagrams. Every time she saw that she was happy she ended up not trying out for the team.

"You should probably head out then, yeah?" She said, letting her eyes flicker open, "Merc and Kit are like really tough captains or something, right?"
