Maybe you're the reason all the doors are closed, so you can open one that leads you to the perfect road

Life had gotten busy for a bit, and thus, the promised date between herself and Britney had been put off. Still, the pair had kept in touch via short notes transmitted by owl, and every so often had seen each other at the Crossfire Club. Still, it wasn’t the same as an actual one-on-one date. Finally, though, both of their schedules had freed up, and they were finally embarking on the date that they had planned that summer.

“Only two months late,” Roxy joked after meeting Britney outside their date locale, The Painters’ Vineyard in Liverpool. “I’m looking forward to this, though. My mum’s obsessed with these. Goes to one up in Scotland that’s nearby our house with her friends once a month,” Roxy explained, feeling a bit nervous now that she was actually in Britney’s presence once more, and officially on a date. She tried to remind herself not to force anything, and to let everything happen naturally. If Britney didn’t like who she actually was… well, that was just too bad.

Perhaps tonight would be the best night to finally divulge that she had a son to Britney. It was a fact she’d kept masked well, feeling absurdly insecure about Declan and the effect he could have on a relationship. But, again… if Britney couldn’t handle that Roxy already had a kid, it wasn’t as if they were going to have much of a future, anyway. Still, she was determined to start the night off on a happy note. “Basically they teach you how to do a painting, and while you’re painting, you drink wine!” Roxy exclaimed, pulling open the door and waving Britney in.

Work was annoying, it always got into the way of having the date with Roxy. Sure Britney knew that is how it always was going to be. Since she was a whole lot older, and more things to worry about then when she was in school. It was easier to date then. Though she didn’t care, because she had still talked to Roxy all the time and even dueled her a few more times. It just seemed that for once, the date was finally going to happen.

Britney wanted to look her best for the date, she took the day off work, there was not a whole lot happening at that moment in time. So Britney knew that it was going to be alright to take a day off. She went and highlighted her hair. So now it was more blonde then it was the last time she was with Roxy. She had also straighten her hair and placed a little make up on. Nothing that crazy at all, she has a simple pink dress with some flats. She was not going to be wearing heals this time at all.

As Britney went to meet Roxy at The Painters’ Vineyard, Roxy made a joke about it being two months late. “The later the better, since we still get to go out on this, date.” She said with a smile, Britney can’t remember the last time she went on a date. “This will be the first time I try a place like this, I had looked up information about it and it seems like it would a lot of fun.” She never really paints though, not since her Hogwarts days. Britney was just wanting to make sure this was all going to work out correctly.

As Roxy was talking about how they taught you how to paint and you drink wine, that made Britney smile. It was always a fun day when she was able to drink wine/
Thank you.” Britney said as she walked in, and held out her hand as they walked inside. This was a date, maybe holding hands would be the correct thing to do. Britney hoped that this would all work out.

Roxanne was not as dressed up as Britney, but she had made a valiant effort to make sure her curls were somewhat tamed and that she wasn’t wearing clothes with any rips in them. The end result was a nice purple V-neck sweater with her favorite pair of jeans. Roxy was a tomboy who fashion did not come easily to, but to her, this was dressing nice. It wasn’t as if they were going to another gala, but Britney’s attempt to look a bit nicer did not go unnoticed by Roxanne.

“My mom is obsessed with them. She goes at least once a month with some friends of hers. My dad calls it her woman time,” Roxy laughed, following Britney inside and accepting Britney’s hand without a second thought as they entered the cozy confines of the shop.

“You’re welcome,” Roxy told her, interlacing her fingers with Britney’s as they waited to be directed to an easel. Holding hands came easily to Roxy… it was the other stuff that lost her with relationships, but she was determined to behave naturally with Britney. Nothing forced, nothing covered up. She just wanted to be herself, and she found that easy to do around Britney.

“You look great, by the way,” Roxanne complimented just as one of the instructors greeted them.

“Take whichever easels you would like, a server will be by to get your drink order,” The woman told them kindly, and Roxy looked around at the many vacant easels, pointing toward a small group in the corner questioningly.

“That look like a good spot?” She pointed toward it.

Britney wonder if she dressed up too much for this date.

“Women time, don’t we all need time like that.” Britney said with a laugh, as Roxanne took her hand. It felt nice. Being able to hold someone hand once again. It was something that she missed, from anyone. Knowing that she was thirty something years old, and going on a date. Her mind was going crazy at this moment.

Britney had this big smile on her face, she was trying not to show off too much how happy she was. Roxy was someone that she started to care a lot about. Though this was their first date and she was going to make it the best first date.

“Thank you, you look good also. Though I think I might have dressed up a bit too much. I went causal, I guess I am such a girly girl.” She laughed as they were greeted and was told what to they were to do. Britney was not that much of a painter at all, but she did like wine.

“That looks like a perfect spot.” She said, as she leads Roxy that way, “so I wonder what we will be painting.” This was something that Britney has never done in her life, though it was nice to do something new with Roxy. Maybe there would be many different things that she could do with Roxy.

“Thanks… I don’t think you’re overdressed,” Roxy assured her. She had in fact wondered if she herself was underdressed, but she was not about to criticize Britney for putting more effort and thought into her outfit. Plus, perhaps the girl was comfortable in dresses, unlike Roxy. “And I guess I’m too much of a tomboy. I was over here wondering if you’d accuse me of being underdressed,” Roxy laughed, determined to keep things nice and light between them for now. Jokes, small talk, all good things to start dates off with.

Or so Roxy hoped. The truth was that she was no dating expert. Never had been, and probably never would be.

“Fantastic, and I can answer that for you! We’re painting that, at the front, see? They’ll walk you through it all, though,” Roxy explained, pointing to a painting at the front. “I liked the firefly one. It reminds me of… when I was little, and me and my friend Declan would go out. Well, I would force him to go out, because Declan didn’t like the outdoors much. Anyway, he was my neighbor, and I’d pull him out of his house to go catch fireflies with me. It’s just a fond childhood memory for me,” Roxy explained, a small smile on her face.

She could never explain the ways in which her neighbor Declan had helped shape her life. He was the opposite to her, and in many ways had been a gravitating force for her, keeping her from spinning off into wild abandonment in her youngest years. It was why she had made her child his namesake… she had a lot to thank Declan for. In fact, Roxy was about to elaborate that she now caught fireflies with a different Declan (her son), but was cut off by a waitress stopping by. “I’ll have the riesling, please,” Rox ordered, looking to Britney to see what her choice in wine would be.

It was nice to hear that Roxanne didn’t think that she was over dressed. Britney was always worried that she would be over dressed in everything that she did. Since she was always traveling for the longest time she never really had a chance to look nice. There were a few times she was able to, and tonight was one of those. Also she always been so girly her whole life. “You are not underdress; you look really good.” There she was once again flirting, at least her best way of flirting, it was so hard to flirt when you are over thirty years old.

The last time Britney went on a date, it didn’t end that well at all. It was many years ago and she said she wouldn’t date again unless she found the perfect person. Who knew that person would be Roxanne?

“That is pretty, I hope that I will be able to paint it that well also.” Britney used to doodle a lot when she went to Hogwarts, but that was many years ago. “That is nice to know that they walk you through the painting. This seems like a really fun place.” As she was listening him talk about a childhood memory. “Oh that is awesome, my friend Ben and I used to do things like that, he would always make me do something that I didn’t want to do and learned that being outside was a lot of fun.” She wonders what Ben was up to these days, he was her first love. Though knowing that things went from good to worst to them being friends again before they left Hogwarts.

“The best memory I have from my childhood was when Ben and I were at the park and I just gotten my letter, I was scared and didn’t know what to think and finding out that he was going to there also. So I didn’t feel like I would be lost and not know anyone.” She said as the waitress came by and asked why kind of wine they would like, Britney was thinking. She didn’t know why she wanted. She didn’t drink a whole lot. “I’ll take the same please.” She said, hoping that it would be a right pick. “Thank you for coming out with me tonight.” She smiled and held her hand again. Britney was enjoying this a lot.

Roxanne nodded. She enjoyed drawing, and had painted a few times in the past, but even beginners seemed to make nice paintings at these places, which she doesn’t hesitate to tell Britney. “These places are for all levels of painters, even people who never paint. That’s what’s nice about them… I haven’t ever seen anyone end up with a bad painting. They all turn out different, but they’re all good in their own way,” She explained. It was hard to mess up entirely when you had someone walking you through every step, after all.

The blonde smiled as Britney recollected doing similar things with her childhood friend Ben. Roxy didn’t inquire as to more of their history, taking the word friend at face value. Plus, she had never been the jealous type anyway… she recognized that Britney had her own past romantically, just as Roxy did (however scant Roxy’s romantic life had been before, it was still present). It was not in her to pry further and ask potentially awkward questions.

“So your Ben was like I was to Declan. Taught you the wonders of the outdoors and such… admittedly, I don’t know that Declan ever ended up liking the outdoors…” Roxy trailed off with a small laugh, remembering the multiple times Roxy had tried to get Declan to participate in mud-sliding competitions with her while pretending she was the Loch Ness Monster.

“Declan and I were both muggleborn. He started out going to Hogwarts but he left in our third year to pursue music,” Roxy explained glumly. She’d seen a lot less of Declan after he’d left Hogwarts, and though they rarely saw each other now, she still considered him one of her best friends. They had a bond that couldn’t be broken by time. Roxy squeezed Britney’s hand in her own for a second as they linked over the table.

“I… have another Declan in my life now, I guess you could say. I… had a son three years ago, and named him Declan,” Roxy admitted, her eyes trailing slowly up to nervously meet Britney’s, wondering how the girl would take this bit of news.

Britney used to doodle all the time when she would take notes, though that was the most drawing that she would ever do. It would always help her study while she was learning to become a healer. “That is something that is amazing, that no one drawing would come out bad. I like to doodle, though this sounds like a lot of fun.” She was glad that Roxanne decided on this place for their first date. She was going to enjoy this moment, being on a date for the first in who knows how many years.

Talking about Ben, brought her back to her childhood, her first crush, her first kiss, her first love, and first break up. Ben was a lot of first, though now they were friends again. She had not talked to him since like a year or so after they left Hogwarts. She knows he got married to one of her best friends. She was happy for them; she wouldn’t ask for anything to change. She didn’t think her and Ben would be together for a long time. Then were better off friends anyway.

“I would say that he was, and maybe a little more.” Thinking back to her days at Hogwarts, she just had a smile on her face. It was something she wouldn’t forget. “Ben was amazing, though the one guy that became my best friend at Hogwarts took me on so many different adventures, and it was amazing. Louis was his name.” She was not going to bring up the fact that she was in love with him for the longest time, though their friendship never changed. He friendzoned her and to this day she didn’t understand why. Though that was life. She was happy where she was at now.

“It is always nice to have a muggle born friend going to Hogwarts with you, that was Ben to me.” The day she got her letter he was there, which was a surprised. Telling her that she needed to hide the letter. She didn’t understand until he told her that he was going also. “Do you know how his music is going? Do you all still talk?” It was always hard leaving Hogwarts and not talking to any of your friends again.

As Roxanne squeezed her hand, she heard Roxanna talk about another Declan in her life, that she had a son. The news was a bit shocking, though not as shocking as she thought it could be. Roxanne was only two years younger than Britney. “That is awesome, I bet he is loads of fun to have around but a lot of work. Are you doing it on your own?” She asked as she smiled, knowing that it might have taken her a lot of courage to bring up the fact that she had a son. Britney didn’t have kids of her own, though she had always wanted kids. She just never found the right person to have kids with. “I mean if that is not too much to ask? I always loved kids.”

Roxy nodded as Britney talked about her friendships with Ben and Louis. She too had mostly guy friends at Hogwarts. Being tomboyish, she always seemed to fit in more with boys than she ever did with girls. “My best friends, other than Declan, were Doon and Alex,” Roxy explained.

Of course, things with both of those boys had gotten muddled for a bit. She and Doon still hadn’t quite bounced back from when they had awkwardly kissed. She and Alex had, though; he had helped her through the time after the death eater attacks, and he was someone she was better off keeping as just a friend. Kissing Alex had been like kissing her brother… if she had a brother. She didn’t explain this to Britney, though, not because it held any bearing on how she felt now, but because it felt weird to talk about who she had kissed during their Hogwarts years, a time now over ten years ago.

“Declan’s? Uh… I think really well, I rarely see him. He’s traveling a lot and seems to be doing well, but it makes it hard to keep in touch with him,” Roxy explained sadly. That was partly why she’d named her son after him; so that it would always feel like she had him around even when she didn’t.

Roxy watched Britney closely as she delivered the news of the other Declan, and a large sigh of relief escaped her as the girl seemed to take it well. “Alone? Gosh, no. I mean, I take care of him most of the time. He is really fun to have around, he kinda reminds me more of myself as a child, stomping around in the mud and stuff. But, his dad, Achilles, takes care of him a lot. And I have a big support system. My mom and dad adore him, and my friend Cameron… Cameron Creevey, do you remember him? He helps me a lot too,” Roxy explained with a smile.

Their wine was brought to them then, and Roxy thanked the server before releasing Britney’s hand in favor of picking up her wand. “Maybe you’ll have to meet him someday,” Roxy suggested. “He’s a really friendly little kid,” The blonde explained, taking a sip of her wine and then raising her glass toward Britney. “To getting to know each other,” Roxy toasted.

Why did it always seem that she had more guy friends then girlfriends, it was just how the world worked out. “I did have a few close female friends, though my best friend was Ally.” She wonders what Ally was up to these days. Then there was Raven, who once again she had not talked to in the longest time. Though it was alright, they were adults and adults got busy.

The one thing she remember was, that her and Ally tried this dateline thing, where they would hook people up. Though the plan was for them to get boyfriends. They were such boy crazy back in the day. Now Britney didn’t even really think about boys or dating. Though this date with Roxanne was just what she needed. It felt nice to like someone again, to want to be around someone.

“I understand that one, I traveled for a while and lost touch with many of my friends.” Britney always wonder what everyone was up to these days, maybe there should be a reunion or something. She could try to host it. Though that seemed like a lot of work, she had moved back to London not that long ago, and was just getting back into the swings. Maybe another year or so she would try.

Hearing that she was not alone taking care of her son, made Britney smile. Her mother for the longest time raised Britney alone, and she knew how hard it was for her mother. “I always heard that kids were the younger version of ourselves.” Though she didn’t have any of her own, she loved kids. She had always wanted kids. “That is amazing, that you have a support system.” Then Britney heard a name, a name that she knew. “Cameron, I remember that name. Though to be honest have not heard it in the longest time.” Roxanne had many people in her life. That was good to know.

When they got their wine, Britney thanked the server. Holding that glass in the hand that Roxanne just released her hand from. It was strange, not holding her hand. Was Britney starting to get those feelings again, the ones she had not felt since Louis. “I would love to meet him; he sounds like he would be fun to be around.” It would also give Britney the chance to see how she was around kids, and the kid of the girl that Britney was able to tell that she was getting feelings for.

“To getting to know each other.” She toasted back to Roxanne and taking a sip, this night might just be perfect after all.

Despite being friends with some girls, Roxy had never managed to maintain those relationships as well as she did the ones with guys. It seemed a bit strange to her, then, that she already felt so close to Britney. Perhaps she would be the one girl Roxy could form a lasting relationship with? Roxy hoped so; the girl was simply effortless to be around.

“It doesn’t help I kinda cut myself off from everyone after Hogwarts,” Roxy added, deciding that honesty was the best policy, and not admitting to Britney how out of touch she’d become with everyone in her life post-Hogwarts wouldn’t be entirely honest. “I’ve been trying to form new bonds, though, like… ours,” Roxy quickly tacked on, not wanting to make it sound like she was still as reclusive as she had been when she wasn’t.

“Yeah, Cam’s great. He’s married now, so he doesn’t have quite as much time to dedicate to helping me with Declan, but that’s okay, since I have so many others who help. And Achilles has really been great, especially considering the circumstances…” Roxy winced here, immediately backtracking from talking about those circumstances. Those could be saved for at least date two. “But let’s talk about that perhaps on a later date,” Roxanne added with a laugh. “I don’t want you to remember me as that hot mess I went on one date with.” Yes, it was best to keep things light, and they had plenty of heavier things they’d already discussed.

“He is, and you will meet him,” Roxy assured Britney with a small smile before their glasses clinked. With seemingly perfect timing, the instructor for this class cleared her throat and called attention to the small group gathered within.

”Now, sorry to interrupt your conversations, but you’ll have plenty of time to talk after I walk you through the first step of your painting. Now, get your paintbrushes ready…” Roxy gave Britney another smile as she set her wine glass down and replaced it instead with her paintbrush.

Being around Roxanne, it was nice, she was easy to talk to. She was someone that Britney could see her being around for a long time. It was different, but it was nice. She hoped that she wouldn’t lose Roxanne like she had lost the other friends in her life, because of growing older and moving on with life.

“That happens sometimes, we have to see where we want to go first, because we know who we want to keep in our life.” She knew that Ben and Louis would still be in her life, if she didn’t run away after leaving Healer school and traveling the world. “New bonds are nice; I am really liking this with you.” Britney smiled, bigger then she had smile in a long time. Being around Roxanne, it was magical.

“He got married, it seems like so many people got married.” Britney never mind being single, but now here with Roxanne is showing Britney that it would be nice to have someone special in her life. Then Roxanne was talking about something, but she cut herself off. Telling Britney, they could talk about on a later date. “That would be great, I wouldn’t remember you as a hot mess. You are far from a hot mess. Our past, it is what makes us who we are today.” Britney told her, she didn’t mind hearing about someone past, it would help her understand what someone has gone though. And making that person who they are today.

Though it would be nice to be able to talk about something a bit lighter, Britney was looking forward towards more dates with Roxanne. “I can’t what.” Then before she could say something else the instructor was there to start the class.

So Britney looked over at Roxanne and gave her a smile, as she took one more drink of wine and went to start listening to the instructor, but every now and then she would look over at Roxanne and smile. This was the most fun she has had in the longest time. Now it was time to paint.
