      How to get sorted   10/05/2017

To find the Sorting Form, click on the "Sort Me!" tab at the top of the page.    Before you go to fill out the form, make sure that you have a username that follows our rules. If you don't, your form will be rejected. You can change your name once yourself, by going to Account Settings -> Display Name. If you've already used your one change, you can request a name change in this topic. Be sure to read the first post in the topic carefully so we can get you updated without any back and forth.   Don't rush to answer the form! There's no prize for sending it in first. Please take your time and fill out the form thoughtfully, so the hat will have the information it needs to put your character in the right house.     Calendar: Sorting Form appears: Thursday, October 5th Sorting Form closes: Friday, November 3rd (No forms will be accepted after this date) The Sorting Ceremony closes: Sunday, November 5th, about 10am Central Time You find out your new house: Sunday, November 5th, 11 am Central Time First day of the new school year: Monday, November 6th   (For reference: Central Time Zone includes Chicago, Illinois)   How to get sorted:   1. Register with a name that follows our rules. The registration agreement explains the rules about names. You can also find them in the Rules.   2. Remember you may only send in one form total for this school year. If you send forms in from multiple accounts, we will not sort ANY of them. Then we have to feel bad about not sorting you. Don't make us feel bad, please.   3. Click on the Sort Me tab and fill out the sorting form as thoroughly as possible. The better we understand your character, the more likely we can put you in the right house. See "How to use the form" below if you're confused. For some in depth information on each house, please check out this topic on sorting. (Note: After you fill out the form, a copy will be PMed to you. Please save that because we delete them from our system after sorting.)   4. Wait for a PM from the Sorting Hat. Be patient, it could take a few days. If you don't receive a PM from the Sorting Hat within 4 or 5 days, contact one of the moderators.   5. If your form is: Accepted: Congratulations! You should now go post in the Sorting Ceremony topic in the New Member resources forum. This is very important. This post is where you'll go to find out what the Sorting Hat had to say about you. Don't skip this step! Rejected: Don't worry, you can still be sorted. Be sure to read the reasons for the rejection carefully, then edit your form (just click on the Get Sorted! link again) to fix the problem. Once you've done that, you can send the form in again. 6. That's it! Once you've gotten your acceptance letter AND posted in the Sorting Ceremony, you're all set. You'll find out where the Sorting Hat put you on Sorting day when you can check the Great Hall for the edited Sorting Ceremony.   How to use the form: The form is pretty straightforward and user friendly. Here are a couple tips: You don't need to fill the whole thing in at one sitting. You can finish one page at a time and save it. Then finish the rest later. Don't use your browser's Back or Forward buttons. Use the buttons in the form to Navigate.  If you don't fill out all the questions on a page, you can't save or move on. If you don't meet the word number requirements in the In Depth section, you can't submit the form. Use the "Check Word Count" buttons to see how many words you've used. If you fill in the wrong answers on the quiz page, you won't be able to submit the form. After you've submitted the form, you can't access it anymore. But if your form is rejected, you'll be able to see it again with your old answers still filled in. Still have questions? Ask here.    Note: Section I: Short Answer Please include a brief explanation with each answer. I'd like to remind you all to include an explanation with all the short answer questions. The answers to those questions aren't very useful for sorting unless you explain them.   Otherwise, we don't have enough information to sort you with. (Translation: we'll have to reject it.)     Many thanks as always to Arianna Wright for her hard work revising and updating the form and to Faraz Memon for initially coding it many years ago. <3

In a post I came up upon the term "Character Library". Can someone please explain what that term means? Thank you.

Hello and welcome!

A Character Library is a bit like a biography of your character. People use them for lots of different things, but usually they contain key information about who your character is, their family and friends, and then a list of threads that you have done in each year.

They can be as fancy or as simple as you like!

Here are some examples:

Titania Baddour

Mine

Aias Midnight

You can start one of these when you are sorted and get your house tag.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I have a quick question about being a half-blood. Is it possible for my character to be a witch but her sibling not to be? Or is it guaranteed that a wizard/muggle offspring will be a magical child? Thanks in advance! :D

Hello! It's fully possible to have a non-magical sibling even though your character herself is a witch. There's no guarantee for a wizarding parent to produce a magical offspring. In fact, non-magical children with magical parentage are known as 'squibs'.

I was wondering if there was a time limit on posting/role playing class work/homework??

Hello Laurie

Every professor sets their own deadlines for when their lesson threads are set to close, so they can vary on the class/professor. However- you can usually find out when then deadlines are for a specific class by checking the announcements thread posted in that classroom. And if there happens to be nothing in there when you check, don't worry! That just means that a deadline hasn't been set yet and you still have plenty of time to get your homework completed. <3

I wanted to ask about the deathly hallows. Now that the Elder wand is gone, the cloak that still belongs to the Potters and the stone that is lost somewhere inside that forest, will people have given up trying to find them? Will the stories still be true? Or would they have been altered to say the truth about the Hallows?

Hi there. I'm having a very hard time uploading a profile picture- every time I put a URL in, no matter how big or small the photo is, I get one of the following messages:

"The server could not be contacted", or "The selected file is too large. Max 0kb"

I've tried using links from my Tinypic account and also links I've found on google for a photo, but none of them work. Maybe someone could help me with this? I've tried several times now. Thanks in advance!

Hello Christian and Fern, welcome to both of you!

Christian - Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but you could probably create and weave any legends, tales or stories that you want provided they aren't a set-in-stone plot that contradicts something students ought to reasonably know or that is canon? I think RE: The Hallows, it's up to your interpretation, the kind of information your character is coming into contact with and the accounts.

Fern - Are you possibly talking about the avatar? (When you hit 'photo' under 'edit my profile.')

If so, avatars (which you can see many sorted students have on the left side like mine <) are not currently enabled for Pre-Hogwarts Students. You can see that you currently have a grey avatar, and upon sorting you will be able to upload a photo that is under 50KB and no larger than 130 x 300 pixels.

I also believe that the import option where you can enter a link to be your picture doesn't work (someone correct me if I'm wrong!) and that when the time comes when you can have an avatar, you can save it to your computer and upload it by hitting "Choose File."

I hope this helps! <3

Not sure if there will be a definite answer to this or not, but I was thinking about my sorting ceremony post. Can younger siblings of the character that have not had their magic manifested yet go through the column to enter platform 9¾? Suzanne's brother, two years younger, is planned to be a squib. I would like him to be able to see her off on the platform, but not sure if he could physically get through without magic in him?

Hi Suzanne! I believe this is possible, yes. In Deathly Hallows there's a flashback in which we see Lily, Petunia and their parents on platform 9 3/4. Since neither Petunia nor their parents were magical, it is somehow possible for the non-magical family of a witch/wizard to get onto the platform. I hope this answers your question <3

My character is an orphan living in an orphanage in London. How would the RPing go for shopping in diagon alley or getting to the train? Does a Ministry worker have to guide me through or do I just do it all in one post?

Hi Jasper!

I went for a little bit of a search to see how this worked for muggle-borns, because I imagine it would be a similar process for an orphan in a non-magical orphanage. I was able to find this answer in the archives. I think Brigitta's answer there, that muggle-borns would have a visit from either an official or a staff member, and then be assisted in reaching Diagon Alley because of location, need to exchange money, etc, is the case with orphans as well.

In roleplaying- you would be able to godmod your character and the official interacting if you wished. So you could either do a "solo" thread where you are writing all the posts interacting yourself, or you could have the ministry official escort you into Diagon Alley and get "called away" on business or something so you are able to freely interact with your peers. It's whatever suits you, let your creativity fly with the writing side of it.

I hope this answers your question <3

I'm trying to locate the timetable for Gryffindor First Years. I can't see it in the Tower.

Also, is there a guide to BB coding that is available on this forum? I see people using highlighting but I can't get it to work for me. :P

Thank you <3

Hi Alicia. A Gryffindor prefect can guide you towards the timetable in your common room. But according to the one in the Hufflepuff common room, first years have Astronomy on Monday, Potions on Wednesday, Flying on Thursday and Herbology on Friday.

A guide to coding can be found here. Highlighting like this, is done as follows :

I hope this helped <3

I know Hogsmeade forum is open permanently OOC, but if I wanted to stay IC, what weekends would it be?
