'No Signal'
Carter frowned and stared down at his cellphone and looked around him once more. Even in the magical world, his mother had decided that she would take charge and had appointed her self as his 'robe manager', as she called it. She had taken to the magical world almost faster than he had. As she chatted feverently with theshop kepper, he had become distracted by a shop across the street that had some very interesting looking animals. He had figured he'd just go take a look and come right back, but by the time he had his mother was no where to be seen and now he had no means of contacting her.
"Uh...mum?" he said meekly, intimidated by the people around him who clearly knew what they were doing. Blue eyes darted about nervously, looking about for something -- any sight that would bring him comfort and some form of familiarity.
He saw it.
"Sweets!" Carter exclaimed. A colorful looking store filled with all sorts of candy drew his eyes. Deciding that that indeed was a safe place, he hurried to it. And if, while waiting for his mum to return, he happened to pick up a few things for himself -- well, his mother couldn't be upset with him.
The store was full of kids who looked about as lost as him, and it made him feel a little better to see the same looks on other faces as well.
A few shiney coins jangled in his pocket as he walked around, observing the candies around him gleefully. He came to a stand that caught his interest quickly. "Chocolate frogs?"
He glanced behind him to make sure the shopkeeper's eyes weren't on him. He just wanted a peek to see what a chocolate frog could look like. He flipped open the box, and he yelped as a brown frog jumped out onto the floor, causing a small ruckus in the middle of the store. He yelped and closed the box quickly, placing it back on the display (hopefully) before anyone noticed what he'd done.
"Even these people's chocolate is wacky."

Alexa was at the sweet shop in Diagon Alley, she'd only just discovered it yesterday and to think, she'd been coming here for years. She was grateful for something different to all the café's that were around. She turned round the corner of a shelf to a different section of the shop where she saw a boy. He opened up a chocolate frog cautiously, causing it to jump out into the middle of the store. He quickly put back the box, seemingly hoping that nobody would notice.
"I saw that," Alexa smirked. "I wouldn't worry I don't think anyone else did," She smiled at him.

Carter didn't really think the girl was talking to him. He had been so careful and stealthy when he snuck away, there was no way. However, the girl was looking right at him. Oh, no. What if this girl was some snitch? It wasn't like he'd done anything that bad, really. Unless somebody in the store was allergic to chocolate. That was a frightening idea. It would be hard to explain to mummy when he found her why some girl was yelling at him for giving her hives.
"I'm sorry," he stuttered out. "I didn't mean to -- I just wanted to see one. Please don't tell! You're not allergic to chocolate, are you? Should I call a doctor?"
Unaware of how ridiculous he sounded, he continued. "I'm sorry, see my parents are...um, they're like normal people, they can't do any of this business, and my mum was getting me my clothes and I saw a hedgehog in this one shop and I got distracted, and I lost her, and I like candy so I came over here and I'd never heard of a chocolate frog, and that's how that happened. And -- I'm just sorry," he frowned.
Taking a deep breath, he extended his hand, hoping he looked friendly and the girl wasn't terribly frightened. "I'm Carter. Carter Havens."

By the time Carter finished rambling Alexa was laughing. She wondered if he was aware of how silly he sounded.
"Calm down, I won't tell anyone," she gave him a reassuring smile. "You must be Muggleborn. That frog would've given you a scare, it sure gave me one, of cause I was only one at the time," she grinned. "It's nice to meet you."
"Don't worry it's only a spell, they really only jump once, you can find much worse in here. Or if you go down the road to Weasley's Wizard Wheezers, you'll have a good laugh in there. So I take it you're off to Hogwarts at the next sorting?"

She was laughing at him! Carter turned red, and his eyes quickly met the floor. He had been nervous, and when he got nervous, he became a babbling fool. At least she didn't intend on telling on him.
Muggleborn. The word sounded familiar. It was the same one the nice lady who'd visited him and explained his letter had used when she described him. "I get it," he said. "Muggleborn means born from normal people," he nodded, oblivious that the statement might've been offensive to some. "Nice to meet you too!"
It was nice that someone was finally talking to him. He nodded as she explained the frog, without actually comprehending anything. "Oh, I understand," he lied. "Sorting?" he asked. "I'm sorry. That lady from the Ministry or whatever didn't explain that much."

"Oh, well when you get to Hogwarts you'll be sorted into one of the four houses. They're Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor and Slytherin, named after the four founders of Hogwarts," Alexa explained.
"This must all be kinda confusing to you, huh?" She asked not really knowing what it would be like for him. She had grown up in this world, so it was hard for her to understand people coming and knowing nothing about it. She tried to help out where she could.

Janeen could see she was breaking John down, with her whining. Sooner or later, her stepfather would give in, like he'd done so many times before, and just give her some money, to go off by herself, and by herself something nice. Then, just like she'd played it in her head, she heard the words, "Fine, take this purse, dearest, go get yourself something nice. Kay babe?". Janeen hugged her stepdad, and ran off, waving to her tall, beautiful, thin blonde mother, who was clinging to John's arm, looking snooty.
Janeen almost waltzed down the street. She hadn't a clue why she was so happy, probably because she was on a high, ever since last night. On her way down, she bumped into a girl and a boy. Crud. "Oh My Gosh, I am sooooo sorry!" She said, smiling innocently. "So, you guy-ses alright?" She said, in her confident way.
