> Applications for the Order of the Phoenix
Posted by Harry Potter - 06-18-10 03:01 - 3 comments
As promised we are now accepting applications for the Order of the Phoenix.

But stop right there!

Once again what we’re looking for is very specific.

Students and Alumni.
We are NOT accepting student or alumni characters for the Order of the Phoenix at this time. (Sorry) I’m not certain we’ll ever be accepting alumni to the Order, but if we did we’d want them to have applicable job and life experience first. So stay in school. Keep off drugs. Take NEWTs appropriate to your chosen field and RP pursuing a career. Maybe someday we might need you, but don’t build your character’s life around this hope. Just play your character.

Original Adult Characters
I’m not specifically looking for original Order members but I will entertain your applications if you think you’ve got something that will knock my socks off. See also my application for Incidental Characters (to be posted soon).

Adult Canon Characters
This is mainly what I want for the Order, however this is not an excuse for you to get to RP every random canon character in the book. Not every canon character has an excuse to be fighting crime. We’re entertaining applications for specific canon characters who were either in the Order in canon, in the resistance movement in book 7, people JKR has mentioned working with the Auror or Justice Departments after Voldemort’s fall, or relatives of the same.

The ones I have in mind are listed here:
  • Hagrid, Rubeus (Canon OotP)
  • Jordan, Lee (worked in the resistance)
  • Longbottom, Hannah (related to Canon OotP)
  • Thomas, Dean (DA & worked in the resistance)
  • Weasley, Angelina (related to Canon OotP) – If I hire a George Weasley I will consider hiring his wife. I will not hire Angelina otherwise.
  • Weasley, Charlie (Canon OotP)
  • Weasley, George (Canon OotP)
  • Weasley, Hermione
  • Weasley, Ron
  • Weasley, Percy

I will entertain applications for other HP Canon characters if (and only if) you can convince me that there is a legitimate reason why they would be connected with the new Order of the Phoenix. Remember not everyone mentioned in the books can or should be fabulous, so you’re going to have to do a very good job of convincing me they belong in the Order.

Another note. It’s unlikely I’ll hire all these people, at least not all at once. This site has long been reticent about the use of the Trio and other major characters. Not only have they wanted to keep the emphasis on you the student, but they also didn’t want us to end up with some lame Harry Potter that no one likes and they can’t get rid of without a fuss. Now that they’ve got me however, lol, they are allowing me to hire more canons but with the understanding that I be very picky. They’d rather the site go without than to hire a canon character who just doesn’t feel canon. I also don’t expect to fill all the roles listed above at this time. I’ll probably only pick the best 2-3 this time and then repost the application request again next year to try to pick up the others.

Application will be posted below. Good luck to you!

Sometimes we just need an extra random character to make a plot work. I’ve been considering the idea of hiring one or two “Character Writers.” I envision a Character Writer being something like a Character Actor, which is to say you would not be called upon to write a main character but rather to play multiple small supporting roles. These might be characters that we may only need once (such as a crime victim), a recurring but insubstantial role (such as Minister of Magic, Abelard Clagge) or a temporary part (a heroic red shirt). These parts might be canon or might be original.

One part I know I’d like to hire is some kind of healer. I had envisioned this being a Forensics specialist working with the Ministry, but it could also be a healer with some other connection to Harry or to the Order. This part has the potential to develop into a main character or might remain a small recurring role. Conceivably one of Harry’s classmates might have grown up to become a healer of some kind so you might squeeze in a canon application that way.

Other characters I would like to have are some Ministry types who might cause Harry or the others problems from time to time. These aren’t villains and certainly aren’t DEs, but aren’t exactly heroes either. The Minister of Magic could fall in to this category. You might envision some other canon character involved in a plot this way, the trick for you would be convincing me that we’re going to need this character in a plot. Good luck with that.

If you apply for incidental player I need to know if you are applying for one person, multiple people, or if you just want to put yourself out there as a staff writer to write whoever I tell you to write at the drop of a hat. Because of the nature of this request the application may be a bit more open ended than usual. It will be posted below.

> Auror Applications
Posted by Harry Potter - 06-14-10 19:29 - 2 comments
The Auror Academy is open!

For a very long time at Virtual Hogwarts we have roleplayed that Ministry budget cut-backs had led to diminished numbers in the Auror Department. Minister of Magic, Abelard Clagge, sensing the public’s frustration with the department, cut funds. Retiring Aurors were not replaced. The Auror’s Academy funding was scaled back to take very few new recruits and to not graduate those it took to Auror. The Department languished.

However times change. In 2019 (VH 16) the Death Eater’s Lair was breeched and destroyed. Several Death eaters were killed of captured. Narcissa Malfoy was revealed to be the mysterious Dark Lady and although she had not yet been brought to justice, her power had been compromised. The Auror’s Department and Harry Potter enjoyed renewed public support. Minister of Magic, Abelard Clagge, sensing this popularity, has increased funding and opened the gates of the Auror’s Academy anew.

This means we need to hire new Auror Staff at Virtual Hogwarts. We are now accepting auror applications and for the very first time ever will also consider Virtual Hogwarts alumni among those applicants. (However, the requirements to become an alumni auror are VERY strict, see below.)

Requirements to Apply (Adult Original Character)
I require that you have been at Virtual Hogwarts long enough to have a student character who has successfully completed First Year. If you are a First Year now, working on your last week of 2nd Term, you may apply. If you are currently Pre-Hogwarts and have never had another VH character you have taken through First Year I’m going to ask you to wait until you’ve got more VH role-playing experience. PM me if you have questions.

Requirements to Apply (Alumni Character)
Minimum of 5 NEWTs of Exceeds Expectations or better. Subjects may vary but must include Defence Against the Dark Arts. Transfiguration, Charms and Potions are suggested. You may apply as soon as you complete your NEWTS, although even if I accept you, you will not be able to RP as an Auror until the canon three years of Auror Academy have passed. Long wait, but if I like you for Auror I might give you a roleplay assignment while you are still in the Academy. If you can’t wait that long to be an auror I suggest you apply as an original adult character.

Alumni who were already approved by Snape should contact me. You aren’t staff aurors unless I approve you to be. You will still need to meet my needs. More on that below.

Students who wish to be aurors in the future. I’m willing to talk to you about this career choice after your 4th year. Once you have been at VH that long I’ll be able to talk with you about the likelihood of your character eventually taking this path and you can decide if all the NEWTs will be worth it. (Don’t PM me until next year starts. I’m going to be busy until then.)

What am I looking for?

@ History of dedication to this site and current activity and availability.

@ Understands that VH aurors are ambiance and serve at the pleasure of the site. – We serve VH, not vice versa. Our plots exist as background, to make the HP world seem more realistic and exciting to the students.

@ Ability to keep your mouth shut. I’d like my aurors to be somewhat conservative with whom they share their auror identity and absolutely close-mouthed with protecting the identities of the rest of the team and any other VH-staff members whose secret identities they learn. Even more importantly you will not share Auror/DE/Order plans or give away upcoming plots to your friends. If you have a history of being a blabber mouth I will NOT hire you. If I hire you and you blab I’ll fire your arse.

@ Good writer – nuff said

@ Can get along – with me, with the HERO team, with the DEs, with the students and staff you RP with. You don’t have to be squishy, but you do have to be at least as tactful and agreeable as I am. (I don’t ask for much.)

@ Your proposed character meets my current needs – Yeah. Really. You can be a great writer, great character, do everything else right, but if I don’t need a character like yours right now I can’t hire you. My team needs to be made up with the right mix of unique individuals or they are of no interest to our readers and no use to me.

What do I need right now?

Lucky for you we are pretty open right now. I need you to not be clones of the current aurors: Harry Potter, Montague Fletcher, Vivian McKenna. So do read our old RPs if it will give you a sense for what aurors do, but don't try to be identical. In fact, if you are creating an original character I’m most interested in characters VERY different than me, Monty and Vivian. If you know what a foil is in literature, try to be that. (If not look it up. Learning is fundamental.) And no, I don’t want you to all be talentless schlubs so I look good. Have talent. Be really good at something, but don’t try to be perfect at everything. A good character will have a weak spot that makes them interesting. I want you to convince me that your auror character could have met the rigorous requirements for auror, but that he or she is still human and fallible. Perfect characters are boring. Don’t bother. I’m interested in Aurors of all ages. I said Auror Academy before but don’t let that stop you if you have a great idea for an older character. I want a mix of men and women. I’d like all backgrounds, rich, poor, working-class, privileged. Various magical backgrounds. Round them out and give them a life and interests outside their jobs.

Possible types I might like on my team:

Hero worship – as much as it pains me, I think a young auror overwhelmed by Harry’s fame and trying to be just like him would be fun to read about because it would make Harry so uncomfortable.

Cocky, arrogant – Still definitely a good-guy, but some one brash or abrasive in character would stand out and keep things interesting. Alternately a…

Wise Guy – Someone who just doesn’t seem to take things seriously. Could be fun and light-hearted or annoying.

Grumpy, Pessimistic – Make the character real though and not just a cartoon.

By the Book – Rules oriented. Pedantic. Would be horrified to find out Harry’s connection with the Order of the Pheonix.

Ambitious – Thinks he or she should have Harry’s job.

A narc – Secretly tells the Minister of Magic everything Harry does. (feel free to combine some of these)

Self-conscious – Young and new to the job. Embarrassed. Awkward. Might mess up.

Forensics expert – alternately see my application for miscellaneous non-aurors (will be posted later)

Tragically flawed - Tries, but has a flaw that keeps him from being a top auror. You pick the flaw. I imagine this as an original character rather than an alumni, but hey. What do I know?

Not very bright – Okay, not stupid, because you passed the Auror Academy Exam. But simple maybe. Non-creative. Slow. You just want to fight bad-guys.

Something so amazing I haven’t thought of it – Think outside the box. On second thought, there is no box. Just impress me.

Questions? PM me. Alumni? PM me before you fill out the whole application. We’ll talk about your character and availability.

Oh yeah. Application is below. Good luck.

> Let's Talk About Sex, Baby!
Posted by Dumbledore - 05-27-10 01:28 - 5 comments
Got your attention? Good! This is a serious subject, and I want your complete attention!

VH is not only a role-play site, but it is also a social site. We talk to each other on different messenger systems, we meet on FaceBook, some of our members share phone numbers and even meet in real life.

Almost all of these contacts are good and rewarding and we make life-long friends. Unfortunately, not all of these contacts work out, and some people have been victimized.

We strive to keep everything on VH safe for everyone who uses the site. We monitor role-plays (with the help of our staff, prefects, and members) to make sure the written words stay within the bounds of PG rating. There are places we cannot monitor, though. One place is PMs; the other is off-site. Both of these places are prime places for the rude, the gross, and the predator to try to get to you.

We want to let you know that we have ZERO tolerance for any sort of sexual innuendo, gross sex jokes, or stalking. This means we will BAN anyone who is proved to be a predator or stalker of any sort. We can, and will, place members on Mod Watch if they post questionable role-plays (which means every post they make must be cleared by a moderator before it appears on the boards).

-----If you think you have been a victim of an inappropriate PM or other contact, do not delete it, and contact a Mod right away.

-----If you make a character with a questionable name, the Mods WILL change it without your permission. You will receive an e-mail about the change, and will have the opportunity to request a name change.

-----If you use a LAL or banner which is inappropriate, the Mods WILL remove it. (Use some sense here. A suggestive LAL is as inappropriate in a school staff member as it in a school student! Plus, the more 'sexy' your LAL is, the more you may attract predators....)

-----Remember your VH age – IF THE MODS DECIDE YOUR RP IS NOT AGE APPROPRIATE, THEY MAY EDIT IT! This is OUR site, and the content must conform to our rules.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We want to bring up another couple of topics as serious as the above in other ways. We strive to be sensitive to people who are using VH – all of the long-time members are very aware of restrictions in portraying your character as abused or handicapped or seriously ill. We have forgotten some very important people on VH, and this is as good of place as any to bring it up.
There's a group of members who are special to the Mods, and those are our gay members. A trend on VH is for members to role-play as gays, even when they themselves are not. If you write as a gay student, please keep in mind you are being read by those who are actually gay and be sensitive in your portrayal. Sex is no more a focus of their lives than it is a non-gay person; it's just a difference of attraction. Being gay is no more important than being straight; it's just another way of life. It's tempting to make it the focal point of your character; try to make MAGIC your focal point instead! Don't be afraid to ask for advice!
Also, many members decide at one point or other to write as a member of the opposite sex from them. Most of us who do this base our characters on people we know, or at least think we know. We ask that you stay sensitive to those of the opposite sex, too!
(PM a mod if you're having trouble RPing a character like either of these (or others) before you decide to drop the character; we may be able to give you a few tips to save you!)
The message I really want you to get is this: Be safe; don't take crap from anyone; and remember:
Virtual Hogwarts is all about being magical, not just being.
> Phone Numbers and Quidditch
Posted by Snape - 04-26-10 06:14 - 0 comments
Oh hi.
It seems one of the rules of Quidditch has been lost in translation some version of the rule changes, so I'm putting it back and giving everyone a general reminder that this has ALWAYS been a rule:
QUOTE
You may not use phone numbers to communicate for Quidditch.
This site has always had a blanket rule about exchanging personal information with other site members. It is for the safety of everyone on VH both physically and legally that we restrict the amount/type of information you exchange with each other.
Calling another member of VH for Quidditch purposes, even if you know them outside of VH, is Forbidden.
You may not:
1. ask players for their phone numbers
2. indicate that providing their number will increase their chances of playing or being chosen for the team
3. allow anyone else to procure the phone numbers for you
4. use anyone's phone number to contact them during quidditch games
5. post or PM lists of members' phone numbers either on VH or on offsite forums
THERE ARE some celluar phone/digital personal devices that can access the internet and messenger programs such as msn, aim, ichat, googlechat, yahoo!, meebo, etc.
If you have a screenname on a messenger program that redirects instant messages to your phone in the form of texts, this IS acceptable so long as your personal phone number can not be viewed or accessed.
Questions about this policy
Q. What if I know someone on VH in real life? I can't call them at all during Quid week? That seems unfair.
A. Your phone is your own business, as long as it isn't Quidditch related or code for Quidditch.
Q. What if I live with someone who plays Quidditch? Can I walk into the other room and say, 'Hay time for Quidditch get online!" ?
A. That does not involve the exchanging of personal information so that is allowable. Although how you're playing from the same IP address is questionable. >.>
Q. Does this apply to student quidditch also?
A. It applies to ALL QUIDDITCH and any other facet of the site whereupon people may feel obligated to alert each other of happenings or appointments via phone.
Q. What happens to me if I get caught/am suspected with a moderator's reasonable doubt for breaking this rule?
A. The parties involved will be banned on all accounts from VH, and the team involved will be disqualified from the Quidditch Cup.
