Rosalie and Tovius bustled in from the cold. She pulled her woolen robe around her tightly as she led the little one through the main hall and down the staircase to the dungeons. They came to the portrait of the pear and Rosalie paused and reached out giving the pretty green fruit a little tickle. The pear jostled in its frame and then a golden handle appeared. ‘Here’s where we’re getting our tea. It’s warm in here!” The little girl opened the door and stepped inside the kitchen.
Everything seemed to be winding down in the kitchen. Dinner was over and the elves seemed to have most of their cleaning completed already. A few of the little creatures carried large pots and pans to their storage spaces. The smell of apple crisp still clung in the air. She could do with some dessert and a nice hot cuppa tea to relax. She led the smaller boy through the kitchen and eventually made her way back to where they stored the sweets. “Any requests?” Rosalie asked Tovius as they moved through the kitchen. |

Tovius looked around in a perpetual state of confusion, without even the slightest clue of where they where heading. Through the Great Hall they went, and down into the dungeons cold and drear. How were they going to find some warm drinks down here? It was the dungeon! Then Rosalie stopped suddenly, causing Tovius to nearly plow into her. “Sorry,” he muttered as he skidded to a stop. Before he could ask why this part of the castle was any more interesting than any other, Rosalie began to tickle a pear in a painting, which wriggled under her finger like a worm before transforming into a pear.
“What’s in here?” he asked, but he soon learned what it was without the need to say anything. It was the kitchens! The room was warm compared to the dungeons outside, and smelled of delicious food of all sorts! And all about worked little… What where they? They were strange little creatures with long ears and noses and skinny limbs, wearing little more than rags. “Any requests?” he heard Rosalie say, as if from a great distance. “Huh? Oh, just cocoa.” He was silent for moment, before working up the courage to ask, “Uh, Rosalie? Who are…” he tried to point subtly at the little creatures, but he feared he may have still been to noticeable. He only hoped that whatever they were, they were not easily insulted. |

Ahh the bustle of after meals! Mop enjoyed the safety of knowing that after every meal he must do the same thing: clean, clean, clean, and clean some more. In fact, no matter what he always had something to clean. A house elf's work was never done, after all. As he scuttled around carrying many big items they used in the kitchen he hummed a little tune. Mop was very proud because he made this tune himself. It went something along the lines of: da de da da da da. If you imagined it very off-key you were spot on!
Mop saw that a boy student and a girl student had entered the kitchen. Many students tended to visit the kitchens after meals and whatnot. Mop liked the company of these bigger non-house elves, unless they wore green. Many students who wore green frightened Mop. "Is you wanting any food or drinks, sirs and miss?" the house elf inquired politely. It was more often than less that students came here to eat some more. |

“House elves,” Rosalie answered with a smile, “and they’re wonderfully fantastic!” She added with a nod. It was always fun for her to introduce muggleborns to all things wizarding. This was their world too and they needed to know how to navigate it. Rosalie was adept in going between both wizard and muggle as so much of her family was squibs living as muggles did.
A little house elf approached the pair and Rosalie beamed, “Oh yes please!” Rosie thanked the little elf. “We’ll need some tea, cocoa and some biscuits, thank you very much! You didn’t want anything else did you?” She asked the smaller boy. “House elves are terribly helpful and they’ll bring you just about anything you ask. Most households don’t keep house elves, usually your big money or old blood families do. Come on, let’s go have a seat.” Rosalie started her way through the kitchen to the little table in the corner of the room. |

Tovius listened as Rosalie told him that the diminutive little creatures in front of him were House Elves, and gathered that they were anything but easily offended. In fact, they sounded quite eager to help them in any way they needed. “You didn’t want anything else did you?” Rosalie asked him after she had given the elf their order. “No, it sounded like you got everything.” And as far as he knew, that was true.
Although no longer concerned about the house elves, Tovius couldn’t seem to shake off a feeling of unease as Rosalie led him through the controlled chaos that was the Hogwarts Kitchen. All about were an echoing din, and the heat of ovens and stoves that seemed to be just beyond what one would call cozy. But at least it smelled good. “So how did you lean to get in here?” he asked, curious. |
